Chapter 1: The Refuge

I got up slowly because of what had happened the previous night. My back ached, my head hurt, my muscles were sore it was like a horrible hangover. I rubbed my head and walked slowly to my mirror. It was old and obviously a part from another mirror. My shoulder length brown hair was a mess since I hadn’t washed it in over a day. My green eyes peered back at me through the mirror. My eyes were squinting since light had found it’s way into my room.

At fifteen I was five foot six inches and still growing somewhat. I rubbed my eyes one last time and then moved to my door. I opened the white door and looked back at my small room before closing it. There wasn’t much to see at our house. It was small but had enough room for all six of us. Me being the oldest I had to take care of the other kids.

I moved down the hall and knocked on the first door I came to. I slowly opened it and stuck my head in.

“Caio wake up sweetie time to get ready,” I said softly.

A soft grumble came from the room. “Mist do I have too,” Caio’s voice said.

“Yes it’s already late,” I said.

“Fine I’ll be out soon,” the boy said.

I removed my head from the crack on the door. I walked down the hallway and knocked on the younger girls rooms. We didn’t have enough rooms so the two of them had to share. It wasn’t a problem since one was twelve and the other eight.

“We’re up.” Is all I heard. Sighing I went down the hall again. Next on the list was Floyd but he was always awake already so I didn’t bother. I took a right at the end of the hall.

I walked down the old hallway until I reached our kitchen. Despite the old look of the house we still had some pretty modern things. Well modern as in being able to keep alive modern not anything truly expensive. I opened our refrigerator and felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned my head and sighed. “Must you always sneak up on me?” I asked.

“Sorry bad habit,” Floyd said.

Floyd was a mystery to anyone who didn’t know him personally. His jet black hair, which was always a mess, and black eyes were always complemented by some black clothes as well. He was about six months younger than I am yet he’s already almost six feet tall. Me being the unofficially declared leader of the gang. Floyd was always my silent advisor co-leader person.

“Yeah I’m sure. Anything to get a chance to touch me right,” I said handing him some pancake mix, “your turn to make breakfast.”

“What’s for breakfast?” Caio asked walking into the room.

“Pancakes,” was all Floyd said. Caio was the middle child of the boys. He was short, scrawny, and a little pale. The boy had neat light brown hair and soft brown eyes. He was eleven but smart for his age. His rounded glasses fit his image perfectly.

“So where were you two last night?” Caio asked.

“Where else?” I said throwing him new flash drive that he had been asking for.

“Thanks was it that bad that you couldn’t take the rest of us?” he said catching it but dropping it. “Klutz,” Floyd said pouring the pancake mix on a skillet.

“Is Leo awake yet?” I asked.

“Nah that’s your job remember,” Caio said walking to the laptop and turning it on.

I sighed and walked back down the hall I had come from. I entered the room to the left of mine. The room was even smaller than the others. There was a small cabinet and curtains blocking the windows. There was a bed against the far wall. I walked up and moved the plain covers. A little Leo was there sleeping. I shook him slightly and soon he woke up.

“Morning,” Leo said yawning.

The boy was so cute. At five he was the youngest of our little group. He was a smart kid for his age. Leo understood what went on around him most of the time. Leo looked similar to his older brother Caio. Light brown hair and soft brown eyes. Their facial features were slightly different but you could easily tell they were brothers.

“Morning Leo come on time for breakfast,” I said as the boy got out of bed.

“Alright,” he said following me out the door and soon back to the kitchen.

Sitting at our small table was the entire gang. Floyd, Caio, Marci, and Lily. Floyd stood up and set Leo in a small high chair we had for him. I set down at the head of the table. Everyone had already begun eating I mean why would they wait for me.

Marci was the older of the two other girls. She was twelve and had curly blonde hair. She had big blue eyes that seemed to question everything like she always did. Lily was the youngest girl being eight. Lily had a light strawberry orange like hair color and grayish eyes.

All of us were pretty thin since food wasn’t always present. Floyd had recently taken working out so he could be in better shape. Not that any of us needed to get into great shape since we already wore. Being a thief does that for you. Then Marci asked the question.

“Where did you guys go last night? And are we going anywhere today?” Marci asked pouring a little syrup on her pancakes.

“Last night we went to a nearby town to look at some stuff. We got Caio that new flash drive he needed. Also got Leo some new sippy cups and some food. So nothing major,” I said eating.

“So where are we going tonight,” Marci asked.

“We’re going to take a bus and head north. Spend some time up there and see what we can find up there,” Floyd said.

“Oh fun. Hey Mist I found an interesting article online,” Caio said eating slowly.

“Do tell,” I replied.

“It seems that another thieves gang is hitting an area in a fifty mile radius. Apparently their getting a whole lot of stuff. Their making quite a name for themselves,” Caio said if you want I’ll show you the article later.

“If they are we’ll just have to out class them. But remember never join attention to yourself in such a way that it’s dangerous. And never draw anyone back here,” I said, “so let’s get ready we could be gone a while so leave the house as if no one has lived here for years.”

Chapter 2: Preparations

Let’s face it even being thieves…oh you didn’t figure that out yet. Yep all six of us are thieves. We have our reasons to be. Mainly because of the stupid orphanage we all grew up at. And there’s the whole we can’t afford anything because we’re just kids and the economy prices rising and junk. But yeah more on that later.

Anyways even being thieves we can’t get everything. Sure we have a lot of good stuff but you’d be surprised some of the things we don’t have. Like many clothes. Yep all you kids complaining how you only have ten pairs of shoes or something like that, well guess what other kids have it harder than that sometimes. Like I only have a pair of tennis shoes. So now your probably saying why doesn’t she just steal more, well it’s not always that easy ok.

Back to the story. After over an hour most of us were getting ready. I had taken my shower in not so warm water and was fully dressed in my normal clothes. I really only have a few sets of clothes and their mostly the same. A pair of jeans, a t-shirt, and a jacket. Yep plain and simple I know. In fact that’s really what all of us wear. Cause it’s cheap and easy to get because we don’t always steal only if we really need something.

I tend to wear a darkish colored jacket and a blue colored t-shirt or something of the means. Most of us have a color we really like mine is blue. Floyd was ready before me. He had taken an extremely fast shower and gotten dressed even faster. His dark jeans, black shirt, and black jacket made him look even more mysterious. These kids getting out of school once called him emo and gothic then Floyd totally beat the crap out of all five of them. It was funny to watch but we had to make a break for it after that.

Caio and Leo came out of Caio’s room. Being Leo’s older brother Caio is pretty protective of Leo even if they do have their brotherly fights. Leo’s probably the cutest little boy you’ll ever meet and I love him, and the rest of the gang, as if they truly were my siblings. But Leo just has his little kid moments which make it all worth while you know.

Caio normally wears some baggy pants, a t-shirt, and a sweater or something of the sort. Leo wears close to the same thing as well. Leo doesn’t really pick his clothes since he’s five so we just pick something for him. Something that normally resembles what Caio is wearing.

Next to join us in the living room is Marci. Even being twelve Marci tries to stay with what’s in fashion which sucks for the rest of us. Why you ask because we’ll normally hear rants about how out of fashion our clothes are, or what the latest celebrity gossip is, or what kind of clothes she wants. Another problem with this is she wants in fashion clothes which costs money and a lot of it which we don’t have much of. But when we can’t find in style clothes for her she’ll wear jeans, a pink t-shirt, and a jacket.

Last is little Lily who’s as cute as any of the other younger kids, excluding Floyd since we’re at the age where we’re not cute anymore and he’d take so much pleasure out of it and laugh at me if I called him handsome or hot which I would never do. Lily loves orange and that’s what she wears, jeans, an orange t-shirt, and a jacket. If we were super heroes or something we could be the Power Rangers each of us wearing the exact same clothes really and having different colored t-shirts.

Anyways once everyone was fully dressed we all went around the house gathering supplies we need. Each of us grabs what he or she would need and the entire group as well. Each also grabs the thing that makes him or her special. Each of us has a type of thieving specialty let’s say.

Caio’s our type of computer brains and everything. The kid has literally hacked into a police network before. That’s the main reason that we went through an elaborate plan once just to steal him a laptop. The kid probably knows more than us older ones because we didn’t get much of an education and what we get is from the computer and TV. Because Caio spends so much time online he’s a little genius.

Marci has nimble fingers which are perfect for picking locks. Give the girl a lock and some small supplies, like a hairpin which she always has, and she can break into the lock. You’d be surprised what those fingers and even her wide curious eyes will do. We can all lock pick but she’s like the queen of it. The girl has her own assortment of lock picks and hair pins that she likes to use more.

Floyd’s our tough guy really basically he’s the strongest out of all of us. He is the master of pick pocketing. Once again we can all pickpocket he just makes it looks so easy. That is if you catch him doing it. He just flows with the situation and has even taken stuff from peoples’ hands without them noticing before he was gone. He can also take quite a few people in a fight.

Lily has acute hearing, her other senses are weak because of something that happened to her during birth. They work fine and everything their just weaker than most but it pays off with her extra sharp hearing. Give her a combination lock and she’ll figure it out. Surprisingly her eyesight isn’t as bad as Caio who needs glasses but it’s still pretty bad. But her hearing is above excellent being able to hear, pays off as a watch out too when your out thieving and afraid of guards.

Little Leo’s skills are still developing let’s say. He makes a great distraction I mean how many security guards wouldn’t stop for a cute five year old who ‘lost his mommy’. Also being sort of small like his older brother Leo can easily fit into tight places the rest of us couldn’t. His small hands can fit through cracks and stuff which can come in hand quite often.

Thirty minutes passed and we were ready to leave. Everyone had their backpack filled but in the travel lightly filled way. The house looked desert and the inside was. You ask how well you see we have a secret vault in the basement where we keep a lot of our stuff, especially the stolen goods. The beds we just throw raggedy sheets over and call it good.

Then we had the hike through the woods to the nearest bus station. Lucky for us we have a Grey Hound bus thing near our house or else some jobs would be extremely hard to pull. The hike was fairly simple since we were used to the trail. We had light conversations over where we would go, what we would do, and other stuff like that. After about forty-five minutes we arrived at the bus station. We bought our tickets and got on the bus.

Floyd did a quick recon of the bus. See we have some people who are after us. If their with the cops, or just bullies we don’t know but they’ve tried on several occasions. Plus we’re always on guard for anything so it’s always safe to check. There weren’t many people aboard either. About ten not counting the six of us. I sat with Leo, Caio with Floyd, and Marci with Lily. That was normally our little buddy system.

Now I don’t know if I’ve said this but because of everything I’ve been through with an evil orphanage, having to take care of five other kids, trying to survive, thieving, and so on I can look rather mature for my age. To the point that when people see me with Leo they think I’m his mom. That’s what freaks me out cause people will give us strange looks, especially when they see six kids with no parents. That’s another reason why we’re always on high alert cause when people stare it can’t always be good.

But anyways we all sat back, relaxed, and watched as the road dashed by. Our stop was a good a couple hours away and northern Virginia there isn’t much to see. Marci was reading a copy of Glamour magazine. Lily was looking over Marci’s shoulder. Floyd and Caio were playing poker using spare change as chips. Leo was leaned up against me taking a nap. I on the other hand was listening to an Ipod watching the view go by. Yep this is how the gang and I go on most of these trips. And I really can’t complain cause it’s quiet moments like this that seem to pay off. These are some of the times we take for granted before something big happens and you look back and say oh crap I should have enjoyed that more. Yep that’s what I try to do.

Chapter 3: One of Those Days

The Grey Hound let us off in West Virginia. Northeast West Virginia to be precise. Forests and mountains surrounded us and not much more by the looks of it. We found a small town and checked out the area. Nothing big in particular rival grocery stores, some normal stores, a mall, restaurants, the works. Not much but still worth checking around for.

We had had a banana, an apple, a granola bar, and some juice for lunch. That was it but it was enough to keep us going for a while. As we walked we eventually went into the mall. Of course it wouldn’t be a trip to the mall without going to the bookstore and picking up a copy of some gossip magazine for Marci. I promised her to pick it up later.

Caio of course wanted to go to CompUSA or something. Leo saw a toy store and wanted to jump in. So far Lily and Floyd were the only ones not wanting anything. The idea was simple scope out the area for anything that was truly needed. Personal things could go on the list but things such as electricity generators or even a new pair of sneakers were on our priority list.

Now a good day for us is one where we get everything we need to live and don’t get caught. A great day which happens on rare occasions is one where we get to spoil ourselves some. Ok people let’s get one thing straight yes we’re thieves and that’s against the law. But we only normally take what’s necessary for our survival. We don’t go around everyday saying hey I feel like taking a giant TV today and get away with it. No we don’t do that I’ll have you know our TV isn’t that big and we left some money on the counter to pay for it.

Three hours passed and we finally left the mall. All of us had just gotten new pairs of shoes, some new warmer blankets for the winter season, four pillows, a new hair brush, a Spiderman action figure, and three small bags of candy. How did we get away with all of this. Well we have our ways mainly going in and out and doing certain techniques which I won’t say so there isn’t a spree of thefts just because of people reading this book. In fact remember don’t steal it’s bad and don’t say hey Mist maybe you should heed your own advise.

“Mist can we get something to eat?” Lily asked she looked fat because her jacket was stuffed with warm blankets she was even sweating.

I looked at my cheap ten dollar watch then at Floyd. His eyes seemed to meet mine instantly. We had a means of communicating to each other without words. We nodded in unison and I turned back to Lily. “Yeah Lily we can. You hear that Caio so don’t eat all the candy,” I said to Caio now.

We had a quick lunch at a local fast food restaurant. Fast food is some of the tastiest yet nastiest food ever created. It tastes good yet all the grease and fat takes away from the normal good taste. When you need to stay in top shape then yeah it’s not great. If I could one day I would make a good tasting and healthy fast food restaurant just to show up the greasy ones.

The six of us got from their dollar menu which was cheap and affordable. By affordable I mean we can get it every now and then. Caio was the slowest eater of the group picking away at his French fries one by one. As I was digging into my hamburger something on the news caught my eye. I didn’t pay it much mind until I saw the picture.

“Guys look at the news,” I said.

Six pairs of eyes flew up to the TV set. It was muted so Floyd stood up and turned the volume up. Apparently there was a strange forest fire in the northwestern mountains of Virginia. They showed a picture of a house burning, our house. None of us believed what we were hearing. The reporter said no one lived in the house, yeah so we made it look like.

The news tuned to something else we all looked at each other in disbelief. Tears were welling up Lily’s eyes, Leo was confused, Caio was biting his lip, Marci had begun to nibble on her fingernails, and Floyd like usual was unreadable. But most importantly all eyes were on me. “Are we gonna go back home?” Leo asked.

“We can’t it’s gone there’s nothing left. You all saw the pictures what’s left of the house is ashes and burning wood,” Caio said reaching into his backpack and pulling out his laptop.

“Caio’s right the way that fire was everything would have burned down. We on the other hand are currently homeless,” Floyd said staring over Caio’s shoulder onto the screen.

“So now what?” Marci asked gloomily.

“We move on. Deep down we all knew it wasn’t gonna last there. We just have to find somewhere else to go,” I said trying to be the usual backbone of the group.

“But where,” Lily said wiping away the tears.

“Disney World,” Leo said.

Everyone looked at the kid in surprise. He did often say random things. But those words seemed so out of place right now that it was strange. “What do you mean?” Caio finally asked.

“Let’s go to Disney World I’ve always wanted to go. Please Mist please,” Leo pleaded.

“Yeah Disney World,” Lily finally chimed it.

“It could be great. Plus it’s October they should be having a Halloween festival or something. Oh maybe we’ll see some stars there to,” Marci continued.

“It would be fun meeting Mickey and the rest of the gang,” Caio said his eyes still glued to the computer.

I looked up to Floyd who instantly met my eyes. With unspoken words the two of us came to an agreement. “Fine we’ll go to Disney World,” I said hearing four excited cheers.

“Are we just gonna take a Grey Hound down there. Heaven forbid we could afford plane tickets,” Floyd said, “what are you looking up Caio.”

“First on the house incident. Now on ways to get to Disney World and stuff. Oh but look at this there’s some interesting information on that fire,” Caio said moving the monitor so the rest of us could see it better.

“They say it started in the area of the house. Maybe the house itself,” Floyd said summarizing the story.

“Maybe one of the power generators or something did it,” Marci said.

My eyes and Floyd’s quickly met. We both knew that it wasn’t an accident something was going on. It wasn’t that weird stuff didn’t happen but our house burning to the ground and only the area in a mile radius of our house burning isn’t that likely. Another reason is that forest fires don’t happen all that often in our area. And after all a generator or something just blowing up isn’t that likely to happen.

“Thanks for the info Caio. Now what’s the cheapest way to Florida?” I sighed.

“Um cheapest…your not gonna like it. A little thing called grand theft auto,” Caio said.

“Like the game?” Lily spoke up.

“No like stealing a car,” Caio said. He had to have gotten this from somewhere there was no way an eleven year old just goes around suggesting to steal a car to get to Disney World. That just seems wrong I mean think about it that’s close to saying hey let’s take a risk of going to jail while going to the happiest place on earth.

“So we’d have to steal several cars. One car wont’ get us to Florida on a full tank of fuel. And we definitely can’t afford a tank of gas for a car. That probably isn’t the best idea since that would draw some ideas,” Floyd said.

“Then we’ll take a Grey Hound part of the way,” Marci said flipping through her magazine.

“But who would drive the car none of us are old enough,” Lily said.

“We’re breaking the law by stealing a car. Might as well keep it up with underage driving. Floyd would you drive your taller…” I said stopping myself before I said that he also looked a lot more mature if he wanted to. A grin formed on Floyd’s face since he knew what I was gonna continue on to say.

“The plan sounds simple enough. Hijack a car drive as far as it will take us. Probably get another one from wherever we stop. Then find the nearest bus station and head straight to Disney World,” Floyd said.

“Yeah Disney World! I want to see Mickey and Donald…” Leo began.

“Calm down Leo it’ll take us a while to get there to start with anyways. So don’t get to excited,” I said.

“Well let’s go get us a car!” Marci said jumping to her feet.

“Yeah!” Lily said packing their things.

That’s how our little adventure began. With a plan to go to Disney World simple enough right. I mean it’s Disney World every normal kid’s dream. There’s the catch we’re not normal.

Chapter 4: Life on the Road

Now the game Grand Theft Auto makes this look a lot easier than it is. Sure we can do it pretty easily but it’s still complicated and if the car’s alarm is set we’re screwed. I handed Marci the old wire clothes hanger which we kept handy. Next step find a decent car to fit six kids in it.

Now I know what all of you are thinking. Duh get a minivan or something like that. It’s not that simple. The problem with a minivan is their more noticeable on the streets if you’re trying to get away. The other problem is Floyd was driving and he wouldn’t drive us in any old minivan. What we had was worse.

The car we finally decided on was the worst in the lot. All we could about it from the outside that it was a Toyota. The model was hard to tell since none of us were car experts and none of us were smart enough to give the car a good look at. Marci went to the driver’s door and began to mess with the clothes hanger.

I’m not going into full detail just so we don’t have a spree of grand theft autos throughout the country or world. But soon enough the lock popped up and Marci opened the door for us. She jus seemed to have that touch with things that required a type of patience. But this was probably the only time she was quiet and not talking so I enjoyed it.

Next up on the list of stealing a car, hotwiring it. Yep classic old trick which I’m not gonna explain either. All you need to know is that within ten minutes Floyd and I had gotten the car running smoothly. Me being the leader of our little thieves gang got shotgun. Floyd was in the driver’s seat. And the rest of our little group was crammed into the backseat.

Lucky for them Caio was extremely thin for his age, Leo was pretty small, and the two other girls were sort of thin as well. Not that they were anorexic or anything. It’s just we didn’t always have that much to eat and we eat sparingly since we never know what tomorrow’s gonna bring. We all have rather small frames for our ages.

Floyd put the car in reverse and backed it out of the parking lot. He pushed it into drive and soon we were on the road. We checked how much gas the car had and then had Caio look up how many miles per gallon it got when we had that last bit of wifi in the area. Turns out we could practically go back to our old home on just one tank of gas.

So what’s the worst thing about riding in a small car with five other kids for miles without stopping. Well there are plenty. One, everyone seems to want to go to the bathroom a while after you pass a rest stop. Two, no one agrees on what to listen to on the radio. And three, Leo’s farts smell horrible and in an enclosed area, like a car, it seemed like the end of the world.

Poor kid probably had some digestive problem which made a simple fart smell like a dozen rotting eggs. Well maybe that’s exaggerating but still. After an hour everyone had settled down. Marci was flipping through the latest Teen something magazine. Lily was listening to the Ipod we all shared. Caio and Leo were sleeping with one leaning on the other. Meanwhile I got a chance to talk to Floyd. Down side Floyd won the paper, rock, scissors match so we were listening to what he wanted to listen on the radio.

“So we agree that was no accident,” I said putting my feet on the dashboard and laying back slightly.

“Definitely. I double checked everything to make sure it was off. Someone was trying to either take us out or send us a message,” Floyd said sighing. The last car we passed had been thirty minutes ago.

“But who?” I asked knowing neither of us knew the answer.

It was around eight o’clock by the time we stopped on the highway. Floyd drove the car off the highway and into a small valley. Lucky for us the car had come with a camping set in it’s trunk which we had broken into. We hid the car with bushes, trees, leaves or anything we could find. The car was mostly hidden as we set up the four person tent, yes four person not six, four.

Now you’re wondering gee how do they fit six small frame kids in a four person tent. Well for one the small frame part has nothing to do with it since we take up just about the same amount of room laying down as anyone else. So you really want to know.

You put the two oldest kids, Floyd and I, on opposite sides of the tent laying on our stomachs. Floyd lay closest to the door just in case something happened. Then you take the next two oldest kids, Marci and Caio, and put them between the older ones. Finally take the smallest kids, Lily and Leo, and have them in the middle of it all. We all had to lay parallel to each other and lay on our sides. If one person tried to lay on their back or stomach it would mess up the entire formation.

Because of the tent’s weird shape none of us were able to lay horizontally while everyone else lay vertically. Well that’s how we were going to go to sleep but we had much more to do before then.

Before bed we had dinner of course. We split a jar of peanut butter, some canned pineapples, bottled water, and canned beans. What was bad about this mixture, Leo was eating it to. I love the kid to death I seriously do but when he passes gas it makes me want to strangle him sometimes but I would never go through with it I’m to soft.

Anyways after our cold dinner we covered our tent with shrubs just so it would blend in as well. By now it was ten o’clock at night and we were all exhausted from the day even if we had been driving most of it. We had spread out the four sleeping bags so we could all rest on them and cover ourselves with them. As we got ready for bed Leo stuck his hand up.

Lily soon followed Leo as well as Marci and Caio. Soon Floyd and I did as well. We all stacked our open hands on top of each other’s. The person whose hand was on top moved theirs to the bottom, then the next person, then the next, and so on until the person whose hand had begun at the bottom was on top. That person raised their hand and pushed down on the others. Then we broke apart and went to bed. That was our little routine before we went to sleep whenever we weren’t at home. In fifteen minutes our quiet sleeping breaths were hardly heard to the sounds of the wildlife around us.

Chapter 5: Hot Fuzz

I got up the next morning at eight according to my watch. All of the other kids except Floyd were all asleep. I walked out of the tent and saw that not only was Floyd gone but so was our car. I went from waking up mode to panic mode. Adrenaline started to fill my blood. I knew Floyd could take care of himself but still I was worried.

I was frantic then Marci came out of the tent. “What’s wrong Mist?” she asked.

“Um Floyd’s gone don’t tell the others,” I said trying to put on a calmer face for her.

“No he’s not,” Marci said putting a hand on her hip.

“Then where is he?” I said frustrated.

“Behind you,” Marci said.

“What?” I said then turning to our little Toyota driving up right behind us. It stopped and Floyd came out of it holding a box of doughnuts. “Your kidding, you had me worried sick and where’d you get the money.”

“Well your up princess,” Floyd said handing me the box.

“Where were you?!” I demanded.

“Getting doughnuts Sherlock. And the money well,” Floyd said then showing me three wallets. I sighed as he chucked one of the empty wallets across the field. He then took the doughnut box from me and set it on the hood of the car. He flipped the top off and grabbed a doughnut.

“Yum,” Marci said as she ate a jelly filled doughnut.

“Did I hear doughnuts? I love rainbow sprinkles their tasty,” Lily said as she got up.

“Yes yes everyone eat your fill and let’s get back on the road. By the way Floyd how far is the closest town?” I said as I sat myself on top of the car.

In an hour we were all set. We had all eaten two doughnuts since Floyd had bough ten a dozen doughnuts. Then we all crammed into our small car and got ready to go. The trip was almost exactly the same as it had been before. Hardly anything to really see, fighting over the radio, and talking. Around ten thirty Floyd looked at the fuel gauge and sighed.

“Looks like this is where we get out,” Floyd said turning into an exit on the interstate.

“Why? We out of gas?” Leo asked.

“Yeah we’ll have to get a new car,” Floyd said.

“That’s where I come in,” Marci said nibbling on her fingernails since she had red her magazine several times through.

“Yes it is sweetie. Pull over in that mall parking lot over there,” I said.

We were now somewhere near southern Virginia or Tennessee or North Carolina. I have no clue which one just that it was one of those. We searched the parking lot quickly and carefully. This time we decided on a 2002 Mazda. It was a bit more roomy then the last car, seemed to have good gas mileage, and even had a full tank of gas.

Marci quickly got to work. Pop the car was unlocked just like that. Marci was amazing at this she really was. She was fast, careful, and extremely good at it. The problem was we now had to stop somewhere and pick up the latest issue of Gossip Girl. I being the great me agreed. But of course if Marci got to go to the mall everyone else had to. So everyone but Floyd and Caio stayed behind with the car. The rest of us went into the mall.

I hate crowded places like the mall. It gets old extremely fast I have to say. We stopped at a mini magazine stand and while Leo distracted the man we got each of us a chocolate bar and some magazines. We scrammed out of the mall and met Floyd outside. We jumped in the car and took off.

“Next time we need something like that we’re going to release one of my special fireworks. That’ll definitely get their attention and you guys could have gotten more chocolate,” Caio said.

“Right your special fireworks almost got us killed last time,” Lily said playing a game on her little gameboy.

“It was a prototype,” Caio protested. Another little thing about our boy genius he was a little pyrotechnic as well. He loved the things as much as he loved his computers.

The ride went along smoothly, Floyd drove, Marci read, Lily played, Leo colored in a coloring book, Caio was doing something on the laptop, and I well I listened to my favorite rock bands on the iPod. All of us had different tastes in music even if some of us listened to the same genre we had different tastes. The ride went smoothly. We even managed two hours without a bathroom break.

Then it happened. The red and blue lights flashed behind our car. Floyd and my eyes flew to the mirrors and we both saw the same thing, a cop car chasing after none other than us. We were as good as screwed. Six kid in a five person car, an underage driver, and um a stolen car. Yep things were looking up for us.

Floyd went on for a little longer but the cop was following our car. Floyd sighed and pulled over before things got out of hand. I told all the younger kids to look like they were asleep but be ready to spring out of the car and make a break into the nearby woods. “Think I’ll have a good mug shot?” Floyd said as the cop got out of his car.

“Why do you use jokes at the most inappropriate times. Your quiet when you should be talkative and talkative when you should be quiet,” I said almost ripping my hair out.

“Why do you ask questions that you already know the answers,” Floyd said.

“Shut up,” I said as the cop knocked on Floyd’s window.

“Hello officer how’s it going,” Floyd said rolling down his window.

“Licenses and registration please,” the cop asked.

“Um about that,” Floyd began. The officer than noticed the other kids in the back. He then got a good look at Floyd.

“Your underage aren’t you son?” the cop said.

“What do you mean by underage?” Floyd said.

“Alright all of you stay in the car. I’ll be back shortly,” the cop said walking to his car.

“Way to go Mr. smooth talker. Ugh what now?” I said staring back at the cop. I then heard the little kids move a little. “Hush stay quiet and be ready to make a break for it on my mark.”

“Hey for my mug shot do you think I should go with a serious face or a badass face?” Floyd said.

“Not funny!” I said grinding my teeth.

Chapter 6

“Something’s wrong,” Leo said from the back seat after we had been waiting fifteen minutes.

“Yeah. I agree with Leo I’ve seen people be pulled over it never takes this long,” Lily said. Just then the sound of a helicopter was heard over head. Six pairs of eyes flew to the window and looked up. Sure enough a helicopter was landing near our car.

“Holy crap a chopper!” Caio exclaimed forgetting to act like he was sleeping.

“Something’s wrong,” Floyd said.

“What gives you that idea?” I said half sarcastically.

“The chopper doesn’t have the police symbol on it. It has a different one,” Floyd said, “Marci what is the symbol.”

The big eyed girl moved over the other kids and looked out the window. “Um a circle, with a triangle in it, and three letters that I can’t see real well,” Marci said.

“Can you guys roll your window down. I might be able to hear what their saying,” Lily said.

“You heard her,” I said after Caio gave me a curious look.

Caio rolled down his window and Lily moved over so she could hear. We could hear a little talking but the roar of the helicopter was so loud. Lily with her delicate ears seemed to be picking up on more than the rest of us. “What are they saying dear?” I asked.

“Um…these are the kids…found them…transport to HQ…that’s all I picked up on,” Lily said.

“That helps, a whole lot,” I said.

“Sounds like these guys are after us. We should make a break,” Floyd said.

“Yeah but first. Lily, Leo get out of your seat. You should be able to pull it down. Grab the more important stuff and we’re getting out of here,” I said.

The two younger kids quickly did as they were told. Soon we all had our backpacks filled with a few extra items. Floyd touched my shoulder and I looked back to see two men approaching our car. Ha like two men could stop the six of us. I made a motion to all of the kids. We were going to run into the woods on the other side of the road. The two men reached the car one standing by Floyd’s door the other by mine.

“Excuse me I think all of you are going to need to come with…” the man said but was interrupted.

“GO!!!” I yelled.

Three doors suddenly burst open. Floyd and I used extra force to knock the two men off their feet. The younger kids ran out through the left door in a pretty orderly manner until they were in the street. I closed my door and stepped on the man who was on the ground. Floyd rammed his foot down on the man by his door. He then looked back at me.

I slid over the hood of the car and landed on the man near Floyd. I gave him a quick stomp to the face and ran after the younger kids. Floyd ran right by me. We both hit the ground as a bullet flew by. We both looked back and saw that there had been more men in the helicopter. Worse thing was they had guns and were chasing after us.

Floyd and I jumped to our feet and took off after the younger kids. They were already at the woods. Floyd and I caught up and soon found them. “Come on keep running,” I said. Three more shots were heard behind us. We all got down low hoping they didn’t hit us. We kept running even if we stayed close to the ground.

We kept running through the woods in the direction we thought the town was. When we had gone a good two miles we stopped. We had taken small breaks but now we stopped to rest for a while. We all sat down and listened to make sure we weren’t being chased. “What the heck was that?!” Caio exclaimed biting into a granola bar.

“Well we know one thing for sure we’re being chased by some people,” Floyd said climbing up into a tree.

“What are we going to do now? We can’t go back to the car,” Lily said.

“We’ll find a way into town. Get on a bus and head on to Disney World. That’s what you guys want right?” I said.

“Yep Disney World. Come on let’s get moving,” Leo said. We had gone two miles almost straight and the kid was still going. He had more fuel in him on a normal basis then I did when I had a ton of adrenaline running through my veins. How he kept up with the rest of us I have no clue.

“Let’s rest a little more,” Marci panted.

“Yeah a little longer. My heart feels like it’s pounding through my chest,” Lily groaned.

We rested for about thirty minutes. There was no sign of fake cops or guys coming after us or anything. We began to walk through the woods. After two hours of walking and some light rest we finally found ourselves in a neighborhood. There were several houses. The town seemed to be nearby so we got on one of the streets and began to walk down it.

“Hey look there’s a fire on the news,” Lily said seeing a TV that was turned on through a window.

“That’s where we were. Hey that’s our car!” Floyd exclaimed. He then looked back at Caio. This caused me to look back at the boy. He gave us a devilish smile.

“Alright so maybe I rigged some bombs so they’d blow up within ten minutes of us leaving the car. Must be why they stopped chasing us,” Caio said showing us something smaller than a stick of dynamite which we knew probably had equal or more force than dynamite.

“Gah whatever. Come on let’s get moving,” I said as we continued to walk through the neighborhood.
