Garrett Morgan. It's sad that I can pull that name off the top of my head. But he's at the center of like every Black History Month showcase. Martin Luther King Jr, George Washington Carver.... Garrett Morgan.

Kind of even sadder because he didn't invent the stoplight.

Good, I was hoping the white man could get a break. I was getting worried. I was thinking, "First the President, NOW the stoplight? It's all too much!"

Speaking of Black History Month, am I the only one who finds it humorous white folks are so uppity about making sure to be considerate and say "Black is derogatory, say African-American," but it's not called African-American History Month?

Why is black derogatory?
I've had people say this to me they prefer me not use the term "black." It's obviously not derogatory, but why do people tip toe around it if they don't think it's not?

An African-American is somebody who came from Africa to live in the US. More than 99% of black people in this country are not African-Americans. It would be like calling us white people Native-Americans just because we were here before the first African-American slaves.

Actually, we would be called European-Americans. Native Americans are the different tribes that were originally here.

1. This thread is hilarious

2. GLS, wow... I'm surprised you've actually run into a colored person who asked you not to call them black. I always thought that was just Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson's opportunistic BS. That's awesome... ask them for their autograph for me next time you run into them. And when they ask who to make it out to, say, "This BLACK dude I know." And make sure you use inflection on the world "BLACK" and pronounce the 'K' hard at the end.

3. The term african-american is single-handedly one of the most retarded things I've ever heard in my life.

4. My great grandfather invented the stop-light, fried chicken and newport cigarettes, believe it or not.

It doesn't necessarily specify someone who is black either. My room mate, actually, went to high school with a white guy that was born in South Africa
