I know you do sports therapy, so maybe you'll have an opinion...

A couple of weeks ago, my left knee started to bother me. I felt a minor irritation just above the knee, but it wasn't too bad. Well, being the kind of person who doesn't go to the doctor unless he's dying, I thought it might just work itself out if I gave it some time. My knee area is not in a lot of pain or anything, it just feels sort of weak when I stand (squishy feeling) and I feel as if my knee isn't locked when I know that it is.

Well, now it seems to be getting worse. It hurts to crouch or bend the knee past 90%. It doesn't hurt in my knee, but just above my knee and it feels as though there is a knot or something there, if you know what I mean. It has been like this for a week now and I thought might just work itself out somehow, but now it is starting to swell up a bit. I am finally convinced it isn't going to fix itself, so I am going to go see the doctor tomorrow.

Do you have any opinions on what might be wrong? Like I said, it isn't a pain in my knee, but in the muscle (or whatever) above and on the outer side of my knee. I don't know how it happened either, as there was no point in which I remember twisting it or anything that I am aware of, though it could have happened just the same.

Depending on where exactly the pain is, I'm inclined to say it's a meniscus issue. The pain above your knee may just be due to swelling, but if the pain is also on the side of your knee (like directly next to the kneecap in those little grooves there), I'd be almost positive. Does it catch or lock up when going up and down stairs?

No, there is no locking up going on. Here is a picture I made really quick to show where the pain is. I think the pain on the side of the knee is just a side effect, as the majority of the pain is more above the kneecap than on the side of the kneecap.

Ok. So I went to the doctor and he said that the bump I can feel and see is fluid. He said that it seems like I have upset the tendons connecting my thigh muscles to my knee somehow (something like that) and he gave me a couple of prescriptions he said should help. He told me to just take it easy and to go and see him again if it doesn't heal itself within a couple of weeks.

I hope the medicine will help.

Yeah, my next guess was that it was your patellar tendon. The swelling could also be related to bursitis as well, but There's no way I could tell. Either way, take the anti-inflammatory meds (I don't know what the doc gave you, chances are it was unnecessary), and ice it down for about 15 minutes once or twice a day. See where it goes from there.

That is exactly what he gave me, two different drugs. Are you saying they are unnecessary? Also, should I try to keep my leg straight while it is healing as much as possible, or does it not matter?

Honestly, ibuprofen would work just fine, but if he gave you stronger anti-inflammatory drugs, just go with that. And try to keep the leg elevated when you ice. Above the heart is ideal.

The drugs were only $10 total, so that's not too bad I guess. I didn't know that ibuprofen would work, because I didn't know what was wrong, but I'll keep that in mind too. Thanks for all of the advice buddy. :thumb:

youd have to take a larger dose of advil (ibuprofen its all the same) than normal like 600 or 800mg
