No daylight, I'm too weak to face it!
Is there any rhyme or reason to it? What do we get penalized for? I'm crushin bammas, not dying and doing it under the time limit. What else do these bammas want from me?

Stay as far away from the time limit as possible.

I find it difficult to beat the time limits when battling without a commando. This game is throwing enemies at me that are clearly all weak to lightning attacks, but nobody can get that skill yet. I'm still having fun and I'll surely finish the game, but in my opinion, this Final Fantasy feels more like an action game at this point than anything close to what is expected of an RPG.

I find a mix of Ravager and Commando will easily stun most normal enemies.

Sure, but I'm running around with no Commando right now, so these battles are taking far longer than they should. When all I have is Ravagers, I find that I often have to time my spells (which the enemies aren't even weak against, because I don't have those spells available yet) with the attacks of the AI to luck into getting the chain high enough to stagger the enemy. if I manage to get close to the stagger point, I'll often try to throw out a single attack to push the chain over the top, but it doesn't always work. I really miss not having Lightning in my party.

Keep in mind that I'm only in Chapter 4, so Lightning is my only Commando.

Who do you have that isn't a commando? Sazh, Lightning, Snow and *last character you get hidden for spoiler reasons* are all commandos. If you are using Sazh and Vanille then use vanille as a saboteur and Sazh as a Ravager then switch both to ravagers or Vanille to Ravager and Sazh to commando.

At this point in the game, I don't have Lightning, Snow, or Fang (who isn't really a spoiler since I read the manual) in my party. Sazh is not yet a Commando. I am aware that this option eventually opens up to him, but for now, he is just a Ravager.

Sazh and Vanille were kicking butt as ravager/ravager and sab/rav.

DCL, for a good while you do not have the option to use a Commando yet. I know which part he's talking about. And yes, time your attacks is the only tactic to use there.

I started the fights with them having Sahz buff and Vanille sabo... Then rained down destruction with double casters.
