So yeah, I had mentioned yesterday that I had intended to watch all of Miyazaki's films, though I will probably have to skip Totoro because I don't think I own it anymore. Though I could probably rent it if I needed to, haha.

The tally is drops from nine to eight on Totoro, and eight to seven on watching The Castle of Cagliostro on Sunday. It'll go down to six as I'm watching Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind right now. So...six movies in six days to the release of Ponyo, which I intend to finish it off.

The order:

The Castle of Cagliostro, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle.

I suspect it'll go smoothly up till I hit the second half of Mononoke. I'm somewhat dreading it. I hope it is better than I remember it. :)

I loved every minute of Mononoke. I used to own it, but I let someone borrow it and never saw it again. :(

I remember the first half being amazing, but the second half kind of dissolving into some Nausicaa idealism. I'm kind of going into each film with a fresh look though, so I'm not going to judge it on past viewings until I give it a new watch. I know a few of these I haven't watched since before Howl's came out, haha.

Finished Nausicaa. Enjoyed it a lot more than I did last time I watched it. It gives me hope for Mononoke. Next up will be Castle in the Sky, one of my absolute favorites. Don't know if that'll come tomorrow or Friday, but it will happen. You know it.

I own Totoro, but only on VHS :( If our VHS still works I might watch it again soon...I've been meaning to for a while. Same with Kiki's Delivery Service. Probably my two favourite Miyazaki films.

Watched Castle in the Sky. Tremendously entertaining film. Despite being 25 years old, it's animation quality and style are still contemporary. Love the town chase scene, and the Laputa robots are amazing.

Watching Totoro now. I had thought it was pretty boring minus the Totoro scenes, but I think it's a better overall film than what I gave it credit for. The bus stop scene is one of the greatest single Miyazaki scenes ever and probably his best to this point of his films.

Generally, I think this is the Finding Nemo of Miyazaki films (or vise versa). Not the height of his (or Pixar's) craft, but a long standing and endearing piece of work. And that's fine.

Just finished Kiki's Delivery Service. Was more...indifferent to it than I previously have been. That's sad. I liked the elements of loneliness, but thought the film itself lacked any real magic.

I've also realized I'm not going to finish this marathon. Four to go in two days. I could if I forced it, but I don't feel like it's something that should be forced. I may still make time yet for Porco Rosso, and I may get Mononoke in, but I doubt I'll get to Spirited Away or Howl's Moving Castle. We'll see though.

You could always delay Ponyo for a day or two?

It's been, what, five years since Howl's came out? Not possible.

Finished Porco Rosso. His most humorous by a long shot. A pair of great scenes amidst a pretty entertaining, but non-essential film. It's got a good length to it. Short, easy film to enjoy.

I was thinking about watching some of those movies. I just have to get my sister to find them at her library.

I am an anime newbie, so I was thinking of watching Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away first since I heard lots of good things about those. Ponyo is out today, so I'll probably rent that one as well.

Spirited Away, definitely. Mononoke is kind of uneven as a film.

What do you mean by "uneven as a flim?" Are you saying it is better to watch in parts instead of all at once?

I'm saying parts of it are excellent and other sections are not so good.
