I asked my aunt if she knew of any headhunters, and she said she knew of one back in Cali but it depends on what you're looking to do because apparently they specialise. She also suggested checking your old school for whatever placement services they may offer and craigslist. You have a poly sci degree right there must be a govt job lits somewheres, stay out of teaching it has crushed the souls of many. You could write a novel maybe?

I know it is a longshot but have you tried sites like Monster (I dunno if that one is strictly Canadian)?

Monster's been pretty useless for me. I've checked it out and it didn't have a whole lot useful.

Ya I figured that it would end up like that. Just got an email from them and thought of you.

I think I'm going to go back to get a Master's of Education and teach. Out of everything I could do, it's the surest plan. I could definitely get a job post-graduation and I'd have a degree that actually counts for something. It's actually specific to a position unlike my wishy-washy good for nothing BA. The one thing I've learned from my current crappy job is that your enjoyment depends heavily on your school. One school I work at is an absolute joy even though my job is still a lameduck position. Another is an absolute misery.

What would you like to teach, History, Government, English; also, at what level, Elementary, Grade School, College?

I'd like to do high school English. Unfortunately, I'd need a lot more English classes. I'd only need to take one additional course (Human Geography) for a Social Studies degree since I majored in Government with a minor in History (first time that's EVER been an ideal move  ). Once I've got my certification there, it's relatively easy to get re-certified in English. And really, I wouldn't mind teaching History in the slightest, since it's up there with English as my favourite subject. Government, on the other hand, at the high school level would be a nightmare. It'd be a bunch of punk kids wanting to play politics.

"I hate Obama!"

"Why?"

"Well... My parent's said he's a bad man."

*facepalm*

Nah, that's easy. It's trickier when it's, "Liberals suck." "That's awfully closed-minded." "They're all communists." "That's not true." "Liberal! My mom warned me all teachers were liberals!" <email later on> "I don't appreciate you forcing your liberal doctrine on my child. It's highly unprofessional and I'll be talking to your principal about this." And that's the PG version. I should know since my mom teaches Civics in the middle school right now.

I didn't know I was sharing the forum with Liberals! How can you sleep at night?

I'll tell you what we don't need. We don't need healthcare, welfare, or any of those social programs. What we need are guns and more guns. An economy that thrives on war like the good ol' days. You commie bastards and your for the people crap. You should be ashamed, ASHAMED I TELL YOU!

Even when you've got a plan there's no way out. This economy is an absolutely miserable disaster. Everywhere is cutting back on teachers as is. Plus, I don't want to stay in VA. I really want to move out west to CA/OR/WA. But I'd have to jump through hoops to re-certify because our dumbass country certifies teachers based on states so a VA license is only good in VA and you have to get a new one for a new state. And each state has its own requirements for getting a new one. And they don't have a job for you anyway. And you can't just get one out there from the get go cause you can't afford in state tuition as it is.

Have you ever been out west to those places?

Have you considered getting a job teaching and letting them put you thru school while you are working?

I've been to San Francisco. I also know people who live in Oregon. Add that to the fact I absolutely hate this damned state and it's not a difficult decision.

Also- You can't get a teaching job without certification. You can't get certified without going to grad school. (Well, you can, but it's the most ass backwards process on Earth and ends up involving nearly as many classes). And with a job shortage, even if that was possible, they wouldn't pay for someone to go to school when they've got 10 other people who already have their license lined up.

I will say that it's nice that I finally have figured out what I want to do. My mother's a teacher and absolutely hates it. So my entire life I've been conditioned that teaching is not an option. Turns out, though, that's actually what I want to do. So all of my occupational angst of the past 5-6 years could've been solved if I had been removed enough to notice the obvious staring me in the face. She's not too happy about the decision, though, and constantly tries to make the conversation miserable when the subject comes up.

Teaching highschool comp-sci and coaching football is my dream job. But that dream will have to wait until we gots more money to afford doing that with 2 kids and a wife who stays home with them.

The west is cool. But I don't think I'd want to live out there. Especially Cali. My experience led me to believe that they were flaky as hell out there. And there are NO black people. When we went, my wife and I played count the black people between San Fran, Sacremento, Lake Tahoe and Sandiego. We counted six. led me to believe we weren't wanted.

My experience in WA is no good because I was only there for training. Didn't really get to see the Seattle.

One of my boys that I grew up with moved out to Oregon because his wife was from there. They seemed to love it at first. I'm not sure how he feels now. They did get to star on House Hunters, tho, so win-win.
