http://www.gamesonsmash.com/?p=14123 And look, number 15 is out of place in this debate; it makes sense! However, I do think both sides should keep an open mind (I think this is what TSL was getting at). |

Why can't we all just get along? Why do we have to try and change everyone else's opinion on a matter that really doesn't matter? The only thing that article of IGN proved is they are a bunch of hit hunting morons looking to start flamewars because they are to lazy to go out and get a real job. And to stupid to do the jobs they have right!

Where dreams come to come true.
|
I don't understand the big deal. Play what you like, don't force change upon genres that others like. You like WRPGs? Play them and shut up. You like JRPGs? Play them and shut up. No one has any right to change what people like in gaming. The difference gives us a choice, and that's far better than how to make one like the other. To the dude bringing up Mass Effect...I played it for an hour and sold it (longer story than that...) and beat Eternal Sonata. Who CARES? |

No daylight, I'm too weak to face it!

Am I the only one having trouble following the correlation in these articles. There were 10 points in the original article. there are like 17 here. And reading these, all I can picture is 2 insecure 12 year olds arguing over whether SNES or Genesis is better. No objectivity, simply vain and pointless insults flung at each other for the purpose of trying to make more loot on advertising by drawing more clowns into a pointless argument. @Biaz, the point I was trying to make was that I love both JRPGs and WRPGs. Both genres have things about them that outshine the other. And both genres have things that suck more than the other. My desire is to see what I love about both genres come together and make my ultimate RPG. Give me the Color, Atmosphere, Unlimited Leveling and Music of JRPGs and mix it with the Open World, Action Combat (or Gambit System), Unlimited Customization of WRPGs. That is my dream. 8) Edited by TSL, Jan 19 2010, 10:15 AM.

WTF?? Seriously WTF??? When did games get based on genre or which country made them and not judged on an individual basis? That is trollspeak. |

I gotchu. The labels are based on generalizations. I hate labels as much as you do, but it's tuff to explain game differences without using these colloquialisms that most folks are used to. |

The problem comes when people say all (insert game type here) are like this. Not all JRPGs are bright and colorful (SMT is a perfect example). Not all WRPGs mastered the fine art of customization (DA:O ring any bells). |

True. but anyone that would believe nonsense like that definitely hasn't played many RPGs on either side of the house. Take the King's Quest or Space Quest games. Them jaints were ALL about color and comedic storytelling. Not dragons or browns and greys in a depressed world. |

Why do people concern themselves over where their games come from in the first place? Seriously? One of hte points mentioned that RPGs from the western half of the world lack depth. I don't know that that is fair. On the contrary, I think that Mass Effect, as an example, is one of the single most in depth RPGs I have ever played. P.S. Post apocalyptic worlds do not need to be devoid of color. Play Darksiders: Wrath of War for an example |

Fallout 3 for the PC has mods to add some color to the game, such as Fellout and the Summer Mod. I have not used the Summer Mod yet, but Fellout takes away that ugly green tint from everything, and nighttime is actually dark. |

Fixed that for ya. Did you not read IGN's article? it was filled with utter stupidity and flamebait that is the only reaction anyone who enjoys RPGs can have. Well if you didn't recognize it for what it really is. Just good ole fashioned trolling. |

Is it trolling, or are people so hypersensitive that they can't take criticism about something they like? That's something I've never understood about message forum life. People can't share differences of opinions without resorting to silly insults and getting their feelings hurt because they are so emotionally attached to their opinions that when someone speaks out against it, they take it personally. The dude made some points about what he thought would improve RPGs. What's the big deal? If you like the stuff he criticized, just agree to disagree with him. Was it "flamebait?" Maybe. I don't know the dude. But the reaction to it was straight up childish. Especially the specific insults directed at Americans. I've been saying for years that many Japanese think our culture is retarded. And while I agree with them to a certain degree, to lump all of us into that pigeon hole just aint right. But, he proved me right. I'm just glad he had the balls (all be them childish balls) to come out and say it. |

You tell me how JRPGs get this wrong but WRPGs get this right http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/106/1060011p1.html And it wasn't on some message board. This is a straight up editorial from what used to be a respectable gaming site. It isn't helping us not look retarded thats for sure. Edited by squid5580, Jan 20 2010, 11:23 AM.
