http://kotaku.com/5449527/bungie-seeks-halo-heroes-for-haiti Bungie will be donating money to the victims of the earthquake in Haiti, but they want our support as well. For every 1000 players that use the special emblem while playing Halo online, Bungie will donate $100 to the Red Cross (up to $77k). They are also selling a t-shirt on their website for $20, of which 100% of the price will also go to help Red Cross relief efforts. I remember that last time Bungie did something like this (t-shirts), after Katrina. I bought one then and I'm thinking that I might do it again this time. Either way, I just thought I'd pass along the information. |

That's pretty cool. Shame I don't actually own or play any Bungie games. |

No daylight, I'm too weak to face it!

Why don't they just Donate $77k to the effort? And instead of buying a $20 shirt, just send $20 bones to the people. I've never understood these gimmicks that companies pull. Other than face time in the press, I seldom believe they have a genuine motivation for doing these sorts of things. If they did, I assume they'd just donate the $77k and like I said earlier. |

Because they're not donating the tee shirt money, we are. By buying tee shirts, we're giving them the money to donate. It's a way for people to feel like they're part of something big, support a cause and get a little something from it. And with the other thing, it's a way for them to get people to raise awareness. By showing that they support you spreading the word, you're more likely to. Edited by nate, Jan 18 2010, 10:22 AM.

Raising awareness is inherent in this promotion and I respect that. What I'm specifically addressing is why don't they raise awareness AND just donate the dang money. It's like me saying, I'll give $100 for ever 1000 people that log on to my website. Just send a message to the gamers about the issue, donate the money and STFU is how I feel about it. You don't need to announce to the world that you did your duty as a human being. And that's what I feel like campaigns like this are. As far as the T-Shirt thing goes... That's just not me. I give money to these types of issues, just like I gave money to Katrina victims, volunteered to help the homeless and marched and donated for the cure for Cancer. (Moms is a survivor) I don't need a t-shirt to show off to everyone that I gave. But that's me man. I'm not beefin with the folks who participate or buy the shirt. Giving is good regardless of how it's done in this case. And regardless of Bungie's motives, in the end, they'll still be giving money to folks that need help, so it will work out for the good. 8) |

In their situation, they give the money, promote the issue AND get people to play their game. It's win win win. ;) |

I am sure that Bungie will give away the $77k with or without people playing the game. Someone in the comments at Kotaku mentioned that the most likely reason a company like Bungie would do things this way is to raise awareness. It could also be that they are thinking of their fans that don't have any money (kids) but would still like to think that they did something to help; even if helping only means taking a few seconds to switch an emblem, that's better than nothing. As for the shirts, I don't think that it is wrong for somebody to buy one. It's just another way for Bungie and their fans to give and raise awareness. |

Forgot to reply to this earlier: It's not you showing off to everyone you gave, it's so you can spread the word about it and raise awareness by example. ;) |

All of those are great ideals and sentiments. But at the bottom of the well, this is still a business that is using the situation to spend some chump change that will be used as a tax shelter and to garner more attention for their business by getting face time with the press. if it were just about awareness and helping the people, they would just donate the money and move on without the dog and pony show. As for the T-Shirt thing... If we are talking about you guys, Nate... Then yeah, I'd buy that. But most people... Nah. 8) |
