How do you feel about achievements/trophies?

I hate them. I honestly wish I had never stumbled across them. Don't mistake this with not caring about them, though. The reason I hate them is because they're going to drive me nuts. Not because of my gamer score, either. It's because seeing less than 100% on a game makes me feel like I didn't actually finish it. I could try to ignore that if it wasn't for the fact it's all over my PS3 and linked to anyone else's. Though, honestly, even if it wasn't I still HATE percentage meters in games.

As some of you may know I already am a compulsive game finisher. I cannot have unbeaten games just floating around. I'll sell them before just putting it to the side indefinitely. Right now, I have a bunch of games to play and more that I want to play and frankly, it's making me absolutely bloody miserable. I'm trying to force my way through games I'm having no fun with to get to others and other games are getting pushed to the side because there are so many on my plate right now.

Add in the concept of achievements and it just gets nasty. There's a difference between forcing myself through stuff that I can't stand in order to get to the end of a game and see how it ends (and cross it off my list) and having to force myself through even more annoyances for a few percentage points. Does it give replay value and some fun challenges? Yes. But not always. And those times when it doesn't are going to drive me crazy.

Let me give an example: I'm already stressed about trying to play Uncharted on Hard so I can unlock Crushing so I won't have to play it 3 times if I want to platinum and I don't even own the bloody game yet. :(

There's a way to unlock crushing without unlocking hard first. It's on the PS3 trophies site. I beat it on normal, and then beat it on crushing. You can't do it in Uncharted 2 though which is why I have one playthrough left of that game but I'm sick of Uncharted now and I don't think I'll be getting that last trophy anytime soon.

I have no feelings towards them. If I get an achievement/trophy, it's like, "COOL?!" But I've gone out of my way to get like three achievements.

I can understand the frustration if you let them frustrate you, but it just doesn't even matter to me, ha.

Nate my brotha. We share the exact same obsessive compulsive tendency here. I feel you 100%

It's gotten to the point where I check achievement lists for games before I buy them. (with games that are not must haves)

My advice is manage your expectations. Do some research on the achievements before buying a game so that you know what's up. Then, if it's a game you must have but it has hoe ass achievements, then just make up your mind that you are not going to eff with ridiculous stuff.

Example. I've been playing crackdown lately. One achievement is to finish all time trial missions on psychotic. Didn't seem too tuff in theory since you are not judge on your time. You just have to finish. But then I remembered, if you die, you have to start the ENTIRE mission over again. There are no save/checkpoints in this game. Not too big a deal with most bosses as you can kill many of them in 47 seconds.

However, the final bosses tower can take 30 minutes just to get to him... Hard pill to swallow if you die on the way to him. Oh, and by the way.... Enemies respawn. :)

Fock that yo. You'll develop a mindset quickly to know what achievements not to eff with.

Yeah, I was picking my next game purchase based off of what trophies seemed the most fun to go after. Not even joking.

And yeah, LBP has achievements for 100% finding items (my first time through doing some decent searching netted me like 65% to put that in perspective) and another for beating all the levels without dying, which is most definitely not gonna happen.

Boost, what way is that? Everything I've seen on GFaqs and on PS3Trophies.org said you absolutely had to do Hard to get Crushing. :headscratch:

 Yep. The ridiculousness of the Achievements for Star Ocean 4 and Infinite Undiscovery are exACTly why I don't own either one of those games.

Another problem you'll run into is the games that require upwards of 7 playthrus just to get the trophies. It's a marketing gimmick used so that publishers can boast that their games have replayability and upwards of 50hrs of gameplay. What they don't tell you is that the game is 10hrs long and you'll have to play it 5 times to fully "complete" it.

No game on this planet is worth more than 2 playthrus unless it's name is Mass Effect, Oblivion, or Final Fantasy.

I've played Yoshi's Island and Metal Gear Solid 3 times and The World Ends With You is next on my replay list which would be 3 for it too when I get around to it. And as much as I enjoyed the 15-20 hours I spent in Oblivion, I feel no desire to replay. ;)

Oh yeah, I've also beat the original Xenosaga 3 times, but considering the source, that's kind of a given.

Yeah, I could definitely see those as replays. As much as Xenosaga frustrated me with some of it's design choices, the game had a charm to it that I couldn't walk away from. I wish Xbox Live would get 2 and 3 with achievements. Then I'd play them without a doubt.

That's the next thing you'll start saying. "Man, I wish Phantasy Star IV would drop on PSN with Trophies, yo. I'm not joking. I have a log I'm keeping of games I want Xbox Live to get with achievements just so I'll have an excuse and a motivation to play them again. Rygar (the old NES joint) Metal Gear (NES) Phantasy Star 3, Final Fantasy12.  I may need treatment.

To last two are easy with unlimited ammo turned on.

@DCL: But you can't turn unlimited ammo on for a difficulty that you haven't beat yet.

@Nate: It's in here: http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=uncharteddf&thread.id=29562&view=by_date_ascending&page=1
You have to download a 100% complete safe file from gamefaqs and start a new game and choose not to transfer medals and stuff like that.

And I actually found the 100% item completion in LBP to be a lot of fun. Random people online were showing me so many secret areas and it took some good team work to get some of the items. Finding people who don't lag or don't suck is the frustrating part though, so I played offline multiplayer with my friends to get a lot of the secret items. I think baiz helped me out with some of the items too.

I'm not gonna lie. Achievements ruined gaming for me. I used to play games to just have fun, but find now that I mostly play them for the achievements. I play games that I hate just for some whack ass trophy or gamerscore. Honestly, I wish they never invented them.

I want to say that I don't care about trophies/achievements but that's not true, I feel obligated to get 1000 pts when they are not impossible to get. Freaking treasure trove achievement in lost odyssey took me 15 bloody hours to get... all for 20 achievement pts, just because that was the last achievement on the list.
