I'm thinking of trying a Tales marathon. I have five of these games and I haven't finished one yet. The games I have are: Tales of... Phantasia (GBA), Symphonia, Legendia, Abyss, and Vesperia. From those of you who have played these games before, which do you think I should play first? Which would be the best at warming me up to the gameplay mechanics and such. I've never been a big fan of action RPGs in general, so a game that sticks to the basics would be best. I was thinking that Phantasia might be the best since it was the first game in the series, so I'm leaning towards starting with this game first. What do you guys think? Any advice in general? Where dreams come to come true.

Phantasia and Legendia have a different battle system from the other three. They're side scrolling where the other three are free roaming. Legendia is short and pretty easy to get through (assuming you don't do the - I think - pointless extra adventures). It'll prime you for Phantasia, which is a real honest pain to get through. Best of luck fighting through it. The other three are in the same mold, Vesperia has the best start, Symphonia is the best game. I'd say something about Abyss, but I didn't like that one. Good luck! I'm slowly getting my way through Vesperia, which is a lot of fun. |

I think this is a bad idea. Don't get too ambitious. You've been doing a good job beating things lately and this will almost certainly derail that. I wouldn't lock myself into more than one game at once. I'd start with Symphonia and then see where it goes from there. If you want to keep going, go for it, if you don't move on to something else. Symphonia- Best of the batch. A really good game. Abyss- The first 15 hours are pretty humdrum (not bad, just slow), but then a major event happens (trust me, you'll know) and the rest of the game is absolutely phenomenal (probably better than Symphonia even). Still the first 15 hours are kind of slow. Legendia- I enjoyed it a lot, but not as much as the other two. Even though it's got a 2-D battle field, it's still pretty recognizeably a Tales battle system. Phantasia- Don't waste your time, it's really not very good. And I absolutely love this series. It does have one of my favourite cutscenes in it though (on the boat). Vesperia- BRING THE PS3 VERSION TO AMERICA!!!! :x And I'll toss in Symphonia 2 on Wii. It's a lot of fun. I'd probably notch it above Legendia but below Abyss. It's a direct sequel to Symphonia. It's got a mixed reception, but I liked it a lot. |

I'm not trying to get too ambitious, a marathon was just something that I was thinking about is all. I fully intend to try and complete one of these games already, so I will be sure to finish what I start with at least one game. It helps me that I mentioned this in terms of a possible marathon though, since I get to read all of you guy's opinions on these games before starting. Do you guys think that the 2D battle system is easier or harder than the free-roaming system? Perhaps I'll just give Symphonia another go, since it seems unanimous that it's a favorite. |

No daylight, I'm too weak to face it!

I've only played Symphonia and Vesperia... I liked Vesperia better... Both are long games, tho, so I recon the other ones are too. |

Neither. Keep in mind the free roaming still isn't very free roaming. Yeah, you can hit a button and run around, but the battle system itself doesn't change that much. Honestly, the 2-D thing is more a perspective change than actual battle mechanic change as far as I'm concerned. |

Good luck man! I love Tales of series, but like the other people said Phantasia isn't as good as the other ones, that is because the game didn't age well and the battle system is primitive (well it is an old game afterall) |

I'm gonna agree with and piggyback on what nate said. I've never played the 2D system from Abyss, but I can tell you that the "Free Roaming" system is still 2D when you are actually engaged in a fight with an enemy. You can run around freely, but when you engage, it's straight up 2D forcing you to be on their plane in order to attack them. That said, it seems to me that the straight 2D system would be easier to manage simply because you are already lined up with the enemy. |

Had you started playing it yet? I had made it a couple of hours into the game (really nothing as most of that time was spent talking everyone in the first two towns) and then the holidays happened, so I went about five days without playing this game. Because I had already forgotten what was going on, I decided to play other games like MW2 online (because a buddy of mine was online and kept wanting to play). If you are playing it, I can/will postpone my Tales plans for a little while and play this game with you. Just let me know. |

it's ok, I was thinking about starting a Ys marathon anyway, I just started it earlier that's all :D, now I just need Ys IV and I have access to the whole series one way or the other. :D Well I also need to play Tales of Phantasia and Tales of Eternia, so let me know if you ever going to start either one. btw, Ys 1 is only about 4-5 hours long :P Edited by kknd, Jan 4 2010, 08:25 PM.

Really? I spent almost two hours just talking to people in the first two towns and doing some battles in the field so I could get the full armor set needed for the fortune teller. :lol2: Not knowing that they are such short games, I guess it wouldn't work as a 'club-like' game anyways then, huh? Sorry about that. I have started Symphonia today and I think I understand the battle system more now than in my previous attempt. I just remembered that there are a whole bunch of awesome games releasing this month though, so I will hopefully have this game completed by the time No More Heroes 2 releases. Not to mention Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Bayonetta, and even Mass Effect 2 (though I need to actually finish the first ME game already) are coming very soon as well. My main goal this year is to do a lot of stuff. I want to play a lot of games, and read a lot of books. I just want to be able to look back at the end of this year and feel like I have accomplished something. I know there are a lot of awesome new games coming soon, but I would really like to cut down the number of games I own that haven't been played yet, because it's been bumming me out. Blah, blah, blah... Sorry for my rambling. Edited by thinkfreemind, Jan 4 2010, 08:58 PM.

I empathize. There are so many cool games I want to buy on PS3, but I've got to finish what I own first. And Bayonetta comes out real soon, like tomorrow soon, I think. |
