No daylight, I'm too weak to face it!
Really has me unmotivated to ever check out game footage. I feel like all they plan on showing me is how pretty the cutscenes are.

Funny how game company marketers will spend most of their time and money on showing us footage from the part of games we wish we could skip.

I should make a press website called gameplayclips.com. Only gameplay clips allowed. No dang cutscenes.

Yeah. What I can't figure out is this. Publisher press companies will put out a gang of cutscene clips to draw interest. While pretty graphics are definitely a plus, I can't figure out why the mentality shifted from:

Man that game was fun as crap

to

Man did you see how sick the graphics were?

We've got folks that honestly won't play a game or enjoy a game because the graphics are weak. I respect the stance, I just don't fully understand it. It's almost like folks want to play an interactive movie versus play a fun game. It's the whole Xenogears argument I guess. Folks loved it for the story. But it's supposed to be a game... And it sucks at being a game.

I guess I'm like this because I started gaming when games that had no stories and the graphics definitely sucked.

But fast forward to now, and most of what I get to watch is some corny cutscene where the warrior lays a rose on a statue for a fellow fallen warrior. What in the hell does that scene have to do with how much I'll enjoy playing the game?

But we all game for different reasons I guess. My desire for funfactor over graphics and story is in no way superior to folks who prefer the game to be pretty or have a great story even if the gameplay is lacking.

I'm just trying to bridge the gap I guess.

You didn't really hit it til the very end. People play for different reasons. I'm playing for escapism. I don't care if the controls are just like shooting a real gun. I don't care if that's not how a real sword handles. I care about bringing me into your world, making me care about what's happening and get involved with what's going on. If bad controls hurt that involvement, game over. If the controls aren't TSL worthy but never take me out of the experience, I could care less. This is why I hate difficult games. That pulls me right out of the experience.

And what's wrong with an interactive movie? That's PRECISELY what I'm playing for. I want an interactive book, movie, comic, whatever. I want to live it.

Also: Xenogears has an awesome battle system. Crap camera, but perfectly fine gameplay. Heck, Disc 2 is nothing but story and people hate that disc, so people definitely play it for more than just the story. ;)

But fuh real, yo? Fock yo bridge, son. :D

Word up. I was hoping you'd chime in.

What's funny about all this is that I'm just bi-polar enough in my opinions for there to be several exceptions to this rule.

Shenmue for example did EXACTLY what you say you love in games. It drew me in. I ab-so-lute-ly HATED Shenmue as a game. But I couldn't stop playing it. The visuals weren't so much "rad" as they were perfect for drawing me into the game. I savored every minute of that trashy game.

This is also why I love games like Oblivion. While the gameplay is dope (to me), I feel like I'm a part of the world. I love that in games. But I don't think it's the graphics so much that did that for me as it was the way the gameplay was designed.

Maybe the reason, I'm no so much into stories or interactive movies as I've called them is because I find so many of them to be terrible. And when the environment or story can't capture me, I'm left with a shatty game that I can't stand.

As far as Xenogears goes, I agree. When there WAS game to be played, it was cool. I dug the battle system. there just wasn't enough of it.

As far as shooters go, I don't need them to be real. Just practical. I mean really.... Does anyone truly believe they can plow thru a gauntlet of shooters and be aight? Fock outta here!
