Where dreams come to come true.

I was over it by about the twenty-sixth time the children's choir kicked in. Also, the new National cd is excellent. Still wish I cared for the vocals more, but as it stands, it's still top shelf material. |

Blech, it's $10. If I'm paying that much I feel like I should get a physical copy. But there's nowhere that'll have it around me. :? |

Finally got some real info on How I Got Over: To call it "long-awaited" or "eagerly anticipated" would be the understatement of the year - as hip-hop's most daring pioneers the Roots release their 9th studio album (and third for Def Jam Recordings) on June 22nd, HOW I GOT OVER. The album, which takes its name from Clara Ward's gospel classic (made popular by Mahalia Jackson), is the Roots' first new release since joining Late Night with Jimmy Fallon for a full time gig as the show's house band. Grammy Award winners the Roots characterize the songs on HOW I GOT OVER as "depicting the everyman's search for hope in this dispiriting post-hope zeitgeist". The lead single from the Roots new set will be "Dear God 2.0." The track re-imagines the Monsters Of Folk song "Dear God" and features MOF members Yim Yames from My Morning Jacket, Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis from Bright Eyes and M. Ward. HOW I GOT OVER also includes two appearances from Grammy-winning soul man John Legend: "Doin' It Again" a re-working of his track "Again," and "The Fire," an original song written for the Roots' 2010 Olympic concert performance. The Roots and Legend have developed a strong musical bond, as the group has produced John's entire upcoming release Wake Up, which shares the socially conscious themes of the "How I Got Over" set and is comprised of late sixties/early seventies covers. Other guests on HIGO include Joanna Newsom on "Right On," Phonte Coleman (Little Brother, The Foreign Exchange), Blu (Blu & Exile), Peedi Peedi , Mercedes Martinez, Icelandic alt-pop singer Patty Crash, newcomer Sugar Tongue Slim as well as long time Roots' Crew members Dice Raw, Truck North and P.O.R.N. |

Where dreams come to come true.

Things starting to get interesting. New singles from Asian Kung-Fu Generation, The Roots, Kanye West (King Crimson?), and Arcade Fire of note. New Asian Kung-Fu Generation and Roots albums coming up this month. Wolf Parade as well. Things looking up for 2010. :) Edit: Might as well throw a couple of the songs up. Asian Kung-Fu Generation "A Stray Puppy and the Beat of the Rain" Dig this song a ton. Love it. I'm not sure how this album is going to sound though. All three songs I've heard from it are tough to get a read on the entire album given the dancy "Love Song for the New Century," the World World World inspiried "Magic Disk" to this song which sounds nothing like anything they've done before. It's gonna work or it's not. Hard to say. Not counting "Solanin" as the album closer though. I think that song's just an add on. 8) Kanye West "Power" http://www.xxlmag.com/online/?p=80884 I like this song too. Dig the end of it a lot with the darkness swallowing it. Really pretty much better than all of Graduation, and I actually came around to it. Still haven't heard the Arcade Fire song though. Can't find it. Not looking hard, but yeah. And that new Roots song is up in about seven different places on these boards. So whatever. |

Yeah, I heard that Kanye song a couple days ago (yesterday, maybe?). I wasn't feeling it. Cool beat, but it gets too repetitive. And it's just wrong for him. It makes him sound like he's trying too hard to reclaim his rap credibility. I will say, though, the line that goes something like, "No, I don't want that p----, b----/ I ride my own d---" was laugh out loud awesome. Well played. :D |

I can see that and understand that. It reminds me a lot of "Two Words" as far as the beat and general feel goes. I don't mind it for him, honestly. That whole last part of the song with Dwele and him talking about jumping out of a window being a good way to die was pretty left field, but I thought it was a great twist to the song. The beat does get a little repetitive, unfortunately. That's my biggest drawback on it. I like Kanye on it, I like the beat, I like the feel. I wouldn't mind a "rap cred" release from Kanye, even if it's blatantly forced, just because he could do it pretty effortlessly. |

Drake was kind of my last hope for the hip-hop scene and the fact that neither of his singles have done a damned thing for me (one sounds like an 808s and Heartbreak reject, wonder who might've produced that?) has got me pretty bummed out. He had such great potential on the So Far Gone mixtape. :( |

Am I crazy to have not heard any of that potential...or maybe more specifically, not expected him to do anything with that "potential?" It's all a bit moot in my opinion. Never got this guy. |

Drake wins the year. Roots, may as well push back HIGO another year back (it's not like it'd surprise anyone, anyway). This album is killer. It's a self assured sophomore album sound on a debut. He mixes in enough of the old with the new to keep it grounded and exciting and the flow of tracks is brilliant. Over is an absolute master stroke in context. The only real complaint is that the last two tracks sound a little out of place. One being that damned Kanye beat. And Drake's been able to take a Kanye song and make it his own before, but this time it really just sounds like he's trying to ape 808s and Heartbreaks. |

Ramping up my excitement for this new Asian Kung-Fu Generation disc. They're really moving to some new things. Their entire discography to this point has been built with guitars, bass, and drums, but they're throwing everything at this one and it seems to stick. Horns, strings, sythensizer, piano, dance beats, cowbell. Heard some clips from it earlier, and mannnnn. Gonna be awesome, I'm sure. I knew it was love when the synthesizers kicked in on "Microphone." Absolutely amazing. Gonna be a long wait until next week. |
