I could swear that synth melody line is straight up lifted from something, but I don't know where. |

Where dreams come to come true.
|
In an attempt to find something else to get excited about early in the year, I did a little digging and listened to a few bands and artists I hadn't heard. Here's what I've come across that is at the very least worth passing along (some dull stuff coming down the pipe here early). I'll discuss my feelings on them, but I don't care for much of it enough to invest fully in any of these artists, I must say, but I thought I'd bring it up since there's not much happening anyway. These New Puritans "We Want War" from Hidden I don't even like this song, but I think it's so absurd that it's worth passing along on its ridiculous overblown-ness. (whispers) we want war. (done whispering) Think this band wants this song to be theme for the World Cup in some capacity? Beach House "Norway" from Teen Dream I almost like this song a lot, but something keeps it from getting there. I love this song and I hate this song. I can't figure out why. I may have to hear more on this one, but may be worth looking into. Owen Pallett "Lewis Takes Action" from Heartland I'm not sure. I love the arrangements, but could do without the vocalist. This is the guy from Final Fantasy, not the game, but the group (or was it just him?). It reminds me of Guernica, which is an automatic plus, but I'd need to hear more before going gaga over this, ha. Surfer Blood "Swim" from Astro Coast I think I may be interested in these guys. They've got this fuzzy indie rock lo-fi stuff going on with a lot of 90's power pop going full force with a hint of 80's new wave. I like their breaks, and they seem to have a certified and worthwhile catchiness to them. We'll see. The American Dollar "Second Sight" from Atlas Now here's a song I'm going crazy over. Everything I'm hearing on the full length is pretty negative, but this song rocks. I love this song. Some shots of post rock with that kind of stuff I get sucked into with post rock despite it all being kind of samesy. Hey...I didn't say it was very good stuff...but we're off to one heck of a slow start, I'd say. |

New Vampire Weekend cd rocks with an x. I like it a lot. I'm not sure how much is to blame on my cautious stance that it probably wouldn't be as good as their debut, but that part helps since I found it's quite a nice release. The band did a great job of keeping to their bases, but throwing in some additional fun for good measure. I'm going to shoot myself if this is the best album of 2010, but it'll probably end up on my year end list, I'm sure. If I were to keep track of the "Greatest Album of the 2010s as they were released", Vampire Weekend's Contra would be the first #1. Hopefully it doesn't stay that way for long, though. :joker: I'd like to have a good year (and subsequently, decade) and this is fine to kick us off, but we can't end here. |

Cousins= Yuck, so I'll pass on Vampire Weekend, even though it's $4 at Amazon. On the other hand, I was pleasantly surprised to find myself really liking that new OK Go single, even though I haven't been a fan in the past. Edit: It was a fluke. This Too Shall Pass was enjoyable, but WTF? is absolutely awful. Universe righted. :yay: Edited by nate, Jan 12 2010, 05:37 PM.

OH GOD NO! What WAS that? Spoon is easily the worst album of the new decade. Oh God, that CD was so horrendous I had to turn it off multiple times. 70 min commute, 40 min CD and I didn't even make it all the way through. What the heck happened?* Edit: *Self producing happened. Edited by nate, Jan 19 2010, 05:30 PM.

I could've told you it wasn't worth the time if you'd asked, but I would be basing it on the fact it's Spoon, and I gather you guys are into them for some reason that's beyond me. |

Because Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is a fantastic CD. Unfortunately, nothing else they're record is anywhere near that mark. I was hoping that the new one would build on that, but it was the biggest regression I've seen. It sounds like a bunch of demos recorded on the spot. |

Sneaky little buggers! There IS a 2010 album that I'm interested in. Motion City Soundtrack has a new one out. I was disappointed with their last CD, but apparently this new one's really good. Downloading from Amazon as I type this. Amusing note: The AMG review for it tosses out a Weezer diss. It's funny, but also bizarre since they give all their CDs 4 1/2 stars. |

I never really got myself into Motion City Soundtrack, but hearing about this being a "return to form" (whatever that means), I figured I would be down for a new power pop album, so I decided to check it out. Something about this band doesn't jive with me, but I'm hoping to enjoy it. |

I liked it better than the last, but it didn't really do it for me the same way their sophomore album did. |

The one thing I don't like about Amazon MP3: The default version is the edited version. Unless you know there's an explicit version of a CD, you'll download the edited version without realizing it. That happened with MCS and it absolutely kills some of the songs where the editing just deletes the vocals so it just sounds like swaths of the song are missing. |

That's pretty lame. For a lot of reasons. Let me know if you want me to hook you up with all the swear words and I'll see what I can do. Still haven't actually listened to it past track four though. In a related story, I've come to realization that I would like this new Vampire Weekend more if I could relate to it even remotely. I just have no comparable measure for having really rich parents and attending an Ivy League school in New York City and smoking pot with kids of high ranking political figures. Absolutely none. |

I emailed them about it. It's kind of a crap issue, so it needs to be addressed. At the very least, some sort of flagging on the edited version to let you know that that is, in fact, an edited version. |

Joanna Newsom's new one is going to be a triple album?!??! I mean, I love me some Joanna Newsom, but that is a LOT of Joanna Newsom that I'm going to have to digest. |

Had to work extremely hard to get through this Motion City Soundtrack cd. If this is a "return to form," I have no interest in hearing anything else by them. It starts off well enough, but damn if this album doesn't take a HUGE hit when it gets to "History Lesson" and "@!#?@!". No thanks. "Her Words Destroyed My Planet," "Hysteria," and "The Weakends" save this one. |
