Picked up that Jonsi disc. I like it a lot. It's got a nice ethereal beauty to it.
It reminds me of movies about dragons.

Then I found out he had a song in How to Train a Dragon, which was like, "Bam. Told you."

But I like it a lot. It's one of the more interesting releases I think.

Finally got around to listening to the latest album from The American Dollar, by which I mean, really listening to it. And I'll say, it's fine. It's pleasant. It's post rock in 2010, which doesn't mean a whole lot, I don't think. I didn't think I'd remember any of it after it was over, and as such, I do not. There are a lot of outside influences that help keep it afloat, but the melodies aren't memorable, the hooks aren't really there. It's a pretty standard release, does the bare minimum to make it a worthwhile listen. "Second Sight" is a pretty good song though, I will say, that one stands out to me.

Now a word on one of 2010's most ignominious releases:

Ke$ha Animal

In the same sense how everyone was all "Dur, Lady GaGa is the suxors!" when she hit the scene, but now is recognized as the most respectable pop musician in the world (how the hell did that happen?), I figured I'd mention that in regards to Ke$ha, since this quasi genius electropop star nonsense is getting out of hand, because it seems Ke$ha is actually semi-respectable now, which makes absolutely no sense.

But that said..."Tik Tok" is a great song. And "Your Love is My Drug" is too. But going listening to most of this album earlier this year, and trying to actually piece it together like it matters in the grand scheme of things, it's a strange release. Because Animal is strangely personal. And not in the typical pop record personal stuff. This chick is messed up. A real stalker type.

Most of this record isn't even noteworthy, which makes this whole "genius pop star" facade a bit flaky. Then again, Lady GaGa isn't exactly an album artist either, but no one seems to really get that, missing the fact that because she's a great singles artist, she must be good.

Honestly, I'm just listening to "Your Love is My Drug" right now, and felt like rambling. There's not a whole lot worth noting with Ke$ha, so I thought I'd just rant for a bit and try and clear the air before we try and give her more credit than she actually deserves. Let's not act like Ke$ha will be relevant in two years.

I actually like how I didn't actually talk about the album at all. Basically, she stalks this kid named Steven, probably stalks some other people, goes to a party at a rich kid's house, and is stalked (strangely, not to her liking) by an older man at the club, who she describes eloquently as a "dinosaur" (D-I-N-O-S-A-you are a dinosaur). This album is blah, blah, blah. There are some true abominations on this one. That aren't entirely offset by "Tik Tok." Which is brilliance.

Kesha is a guilty pleasure of mine on the radio. Wouldn't buy her album, but I do enjoy listening to her songs now and then in fragments. But whoever claimed she has any pop relevance is a clown. She's about as disposable as they come. But, then again, Lady Gaga surprised the hell out of me, so I could be putting my left foot in my mouth this time.

Lost in the shuffle of Tuesday's releases was the release of The Juliana Theory's 28 B-Sides & Rarities, a collection of 28 b-sides and rarities by The Juliana Theory. You can pick it up on Amazon for $7.99, which is basically like...really cheap for what you get, which is 28 b-sides and rarities from The Juliana Theory.

--

Was given a promo copy of The Radio Dept.'s new album, and I love it. It's entirely nondescript, but I love the beauty it has, and thumbs up on the metallic vocal effect, which drowns out what I'm suspiciously thinking are awful lyrics. Definitely a positive release this year.

--

Further discussion on more recent releases:

Tom Jones's album is too rock and roll for me. I wish it were more country/folk, but I don't much dig all the rocking out that goes on.

Katy Perry's new release seems serviceable, by my god is it not the filthiest release I've heard this year. :P

And Anberlin have done it again: created a seemingly average hosh posh of...Anberlin rock. I was right to not get excited about this one.

Still haven't heard Interpol. Not sure how I feel about hearing Interpol for some reason.

New Kanye West song ("Devil in a New Dress") isn't doing a whole lot for me. I wanted epic, and got College Dropout instead, which would've been fine if I were expecting College Dropout.

And I still don't much see a whole lot in this new Cee-Lo song. Am I missing the joke that makes this one of the greatest songs of all time? I'm not seeing the groundbreaking part of it. Janelle Monae's "Tightrope" is much better, which doesn't even mean a whole lot to me.

--

Upcoming?

Weezer Hurley is still coming out. And it's still on Epitaph.

Actually excited about the new Envy album, which comes out on September 22nd. Not sure how to do that. Doubt it comes in at work, but I don't want to wait for it. Expecting it to be very Envy, which is to say, I expect it to sound like this: "(three syllable Japanese word)-oooooo (three syllable Japanese word)-aaaay, (three syllable Japanese word)-eeey" over epic guitars and lush arrangements.

Jimmy Eat World I still don't know. If it's part of these new releases that are marked at a lower price, I may give it a shot, but no way do I consider this a full price purchase. Not after what they did to me with Chase This Light. Why are all my favorite bands creating music so past their prime it's unlistenable? Is this what it feels like to be old?

Bad Religion have a new cd coming out for some reason. I assume this truly excites five people.

And Ne-Yo, I don't know. We'll see. Not digging these singles at all.

Anberlin's single was sinfully boring. The last album wasn't bad, but more than enough Anberlin to last me for the rest of their career.

New Kanye sucks. Great beat, but Kanye's pretty damned lousy on it.

Hurley's still got the laziest album cover ever. Cropped himself out of a picture he took with the actor. Brilliant.

New Envy? Hmmm...

Jimmy Eat World's first single was awesome and that's all I need to know. Plus, while a little disappointing, Chase This Light was hardly a bad album. Putting them on the same level as Weezer is ridiculous. One band has just lost their spark, the other's become a giant joke.

Still never got the last Bad Religion CD. I'm more excited about Social Distortion, anyway, when it comes to punk bands that no one has cared about since the early 90s.

I was over Ne-Yo after the first album. He wants to be Michael Jackson in this new song so badly you can practically taste it.

It's just a fun song, that's about it. The first listen was just kind of a "So....?" experience for me, but now it's just one of those songs that I can pop on whenever and just sort of smirk. It's like a more upbeat version of that Eamon crap from several years back.

Anywho, new Linkin Park out on Tuesday. Sit not completely sold on the ridiculously busy single. Rubin threw everything at that song, including the kitchen sink, and it makes for one... interesting result. I'm still more than willing to give the album a shot, though.

You can listen to Hurley on MySpace in its entirety. Worth noting because...ah crap. I give up.

http://www.myspace.com/weezer

I'll listen, but I haven't had lower expectations for a record in my entire life.

There are positives on this one. Strangely enough. The first two or three tracks are worth listening to. Kind of ebbs and flows from listenable to truly abysmal at times and with no real pattern from that point. I got tired of it towards the end, but I did like "Ruling Me" a lot. Apparently Ryan Adams cowrote "Run Away." Kind of has more in common with Make Believe than any of the other 2000's releases.

My day spent? Searching out new music for the year. We'll see what that gives me ultimately, as I've got a lot of albums to check into now, but, I thought I'd take the time to share with you guys one song in particular that I love. From Ólafur Arnalds from Iceland (where beautiful music apparently grows on goddamn trees), is this song I can't even read, much less attempt to say ("Hægt, kemur ljósið" wut?), but here it is:

Can I say this is unbelievably beautiful? And the video is just...wow.

If that video was the result, I'd say that was a day well spent. That was fantastic.

So Hurley... not wasting money on this one. Sounds just like the last to me. Rivers tries desperately to be clever and relevant while the band plays a hodgepodge of radio friendly pop rock that's already been done to death. I didn't mind Unspoken, but the rest ranged from corny to lousy.

Listened to Ólafur Arnalds ...And They Have Escaped the Weight of Darkness. I wish it were less modern classical and more...post crescendo whatever, because there are definitely some lulls going on. It's a beauty though.

Kisses The Heart of the Nightlife - A real dull 80's revival synth record. "Midnight Lover" feels like LA in the 80's (or how I imagine LA in the 80's felt), but not much else has that same fire.

Devil Sold His Soul Blessed & Cursed - They sound as I imagine Envy might if they were coming out of wherever the hell scenecore bands come out of nowadays, USA earlier this decade if we assume they had the ability of Envy, but the influences of all the rest of that crap. Some insanely good parts, but they bog it down with some real lameshit scene choruses and too many random ass breakdowns. Harkens back as a positive to the good things The Bled offered the post hardcore genre with their first album, before they drowned in their own pretentiousness. But it probably sounds more like what The Bled would've liked to become instead of what they did become.

Wild Nothing Gemini

Beautiful 80's revival indie pop record. Reminds me of a cross between Beach House and Belle and Sebastian in a sense. Absolutely gorgeous. Quickly front running into one of my favorite releases of the year. It's so light and free. :)

I kind of want that Brandon Flowers CD. I don't own any Killers albums since I strongly disliked the original (my friend owned it and I got to listen to it most every day driving to and from school). Still, they've recorded a handful of songs I really liked and I'm a big fan of Crossfire- song and video. Also, he's so pretty.
