weezer is the sonic the hedgehog of music.
Yeah, it was cool when it was just a blue hedgehog, but then they introduced green and red ones and I was like no thank you, sir!

I was cool with Weezer through Maladroit. Make Believe was where they first lost me. Red Album brought me back because there was enough cleverness on it to catch me. But then Raditude signed off on the death warrant.

I still think Pinkerton is kinda bad, although maybe it's just the fact that lyrics REALLY rub me the wrong way. Still...Blue Album was pretty great! ;)
I thought the lyrics helped it tremendously. Not o lynis it a masterpiece, but the bumbling awkwardness of the lyrics are nothing but complimentary in my mind. Granted, I'm more or less that bumbling awkwardness, with similar fears of loneliness. Even when the lyrics brighten, there's always a kind of doom lurking because I'm so messed up I worry about achieving something resembling happiness, and can never appreciate it because I'm sonafraid of losing it that I'm just worn out and really beat when I do lose it. That's Pinkerton to me.

And nate, Rivers had us all fooled. One of the greatest hoaxes in rock music, haha.

I wasn't okay with maladroit. But keep fishin is probably their last great song I think. I did enjoy make believe, but these last two? Death warrant.

So.... without all the rhetoric and poetic justicizing... why are we hating on Weezer?

Outsider looking in. Never been into them, but curious about why the music nerditry seems to be kicking in so heavy on them.

A nosedive in quality leading to them becoming a parody of themselves. They've become musically redundant in the absolute corniest way possible.

Production? Writing (Music or Lyrics)? Playing?

From the bits and pieces of them that I've heard over time, I don't see a huge difference. They've always struck me as a normal kinda cheese-rock band. But I don't study them or other bands that play what I consider "plain" rock, so maybe that's why.

Really? From the inside, they've switched their sound up more times than the vast majority of bands. You can really see this if you listen to their first 4 albums back to back.

But the issue has been solely writing. Their songs and lyrics have started to sound like a really good Weezer cover band doing parodies.

Yeah, my ignorance with their work runs deep.

Sidenote: I have a prejudice with what I call "plain" rock. If it's not metal-ish or super awesome (subject to my tastes) on melody construction, I'm typically not attracted to it. A lot of my issue stems from the rhythm section as well. Beat-wise, Rock is not usually my cup of tea as I like my beats funk heavy or ear bleedingly hard. Rock often doesn't give me either, so if your melodies via instrumentation or singing don't hook me, I'm not interested. The example here would be why I don't care about Weezer (from what I've heard) and why I love bands like Brazil. (RIP) It also explains why I don't like most punk-rock I hear.

I've heard a few Weezer hits over the years, maximum. After this chat, I'll prolly go back and listen to their isht just to see what everyone is talking about.

:fro:

Pick up Pinkerton first. That'd be the album to interest you, if I had to pick one. Most people prefer the Blue Album (their first self titled of three with, you guessed it, a blue cover), so that'd be the place to go after Pinkerton.

It's times like this I wish we lived closer because I've got such a ton of music that'd be easy to just let you borrow if you were down the street or whatever.

True indeed. Thanks for the tipitry. I'll try to give these some listening time this weekend if I get a chance during my studio/writing time. Maybe they'll inspire me to write something.

While wandering around on iTunes earlier today, I came across this new album from a band called Sleigh Bells. The debut albums is "Treats" and it is an accurate description, as this album is just insanely good. Imagine that M.I.A, The Go! Team, Beastie Boys, Bumblebeez 81, and Funkadelic all got together to make a super band, while all bringing along their own unique sounds; that is Sleigh Bells.

Since quickly buying the album this morning, I found out that you can listen to the full album on NPR right now, for free.

*And no, your speakers aren't messed up. The treble balance might make it sound like you've just blown a speaker, but you haven't. However, this music is also unapologetically loud, so you might want to check after listening anyways, just to be sure. :XD:
hey first time I read that post and listened to those two songs I was like "WTF is this garbage!" and turned it off immediately, but I just found this song called "Rill Rill" and really liked it so I went back to check those songs and I like them too now
