Forgotten lead singers go solo! Alex Band and Ed Kowalczyk both released albums recently. Alex Band gets a pass based off the fact that dude is still overemoting every note and singing the same song. Ed Kowalczyk gets a pass because he's a douchebag and I refuse to put a penny in that dude's pocket. His new song is pretty awesome, though. :(

The Tallest Man on Earth The Wild Hunt is a tremendous folk album. The easy way out is to compare it to Dylan because of the guitar/harmonica/nasaly voice, but it's really not. Better guitar than Dylan ever had, and a spitfire lyrical flow compared to Dylan. Like most of the best releases this year, it's simply solid though. Not a whole lot that makes me stand up and say, "Yes. Holy crap. Yes."

Also checked out the Suckers Wild Smile album, and it's meh. "A Mind I Knew" is a great song, but it's kind of a not too great album. It gets better as it goes though. I might need to listen to it a few more times before getting an idea.

TTMOE does have some FANTASTIC guitar work. Not overly technical, but absolutely breathtaking in its beauty at times. I really should pick up one of his discs.

Blue Giant's previews lied to me. I listened to a couple and they sounded really awesome. Turns out I randomly picked the best songs and even those aren't as good as the previews. There are some standout tracks, but some of this stuff is pretty lousy.

No daylight, I'm too weak to face it!
Roots HIGO - I really enjoyed this joint up until the last 3 songs or so. Those songs seemed to kinda be tossed in arbitrarily. Didn't mind them as stand alone songs, but didn't seem to fit the theme. But it's cool. I'm not a stickler for that as long as I dig what I'm hearing.

UAU Presents Godsilla - These are my homeboys man. Real good dudes and their album so far is really good. Still listening, will update once complete.

Raekwon CL2 - So far so dope. I haven't finished this one yet, but I like what I've heard so far.

Reef the Lost Cauze Fight Music - DOPE! This bamma puts out like 2 albums a year. His mixtape/album Feast of Famine (2006) made me a believer. His follow up album was nice, but not as strong... THIS joint cranks. So dope.

New Wolf Parade album is not too hot. Having trouble listening to it. Two noteworthy songs and a ton of great keyboard arrangements. The rest is pretty forgettable.

This Big Boi CD is the sleeper hit of the year for me. I didn't expect too much out of it, but it hasn't left my car since I bought it. The middle section is a little weak, but the fantastic end and opening make up for it. My biggest problem has to do with some questionable content (mostly sex related) that really puts me off some songs. Still, some of these songs on here are mind-blowingly awesome.

The end of cave-o-sapien was the best part on the album by far imo. So spazzy and chaotic :D

I like the new Roots album. When I first heard Criminal off Rising Down, I wished more of there songs sounded like that and most of the songs on the new album are pretty similar so I got what I wanted and I'm happy. Now or Never and Right On are my favs 8)

Even Sarah likes that damned album. I don't get it. I've listened and listened and I don't get it. Between this and Rising Down I don't think I'll be buying whatever comes next. They had a good reign as my favourite band, but me and the Roots just don't see eye to eye anymore.

The dude from TV on the Radio has a solo disc coming out at the end of August called Maximum Balloon. Not bad from what I've heard. Electronica hip-hop or something.

Oh yeah...Arcade Fire only seven days away. Cannot. Wait. Cannot. Wait. Cannot. Wait. Still haven't heard anything from it. Going to keep it that way unless I stumble upon a song or something.

Speaking of Arcade Fire, Rolling Stone's review of The Suburbs is laughably bad:

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/reviews/album/17385/182695

I can't believe how out of touch Rolling Stone is by reading this review.

"It's like...if Springsteen joined U2 and Neil Diamond were influenced by David Bowie...about the suburbs when the vocalist croons Boo doo da dee / Da da dee doo bop (As The Boss would say 'As I lift my groceries in to my car / I turn back for a moment and catch a smile / That blows this whole fucking place apart'!)"

That's paraphrasing, because it'd have bigger words.

It's such an insult that one of today's premier acts, one of those legit answers to the age old "what about today's music is worthwhile?" questions, can't get weighed on their own laurels and compared intelligently with their contemporaries, but rather acts that were popular over 30 years ago that the band probably has in their music collection.

...all while likely shortchanging what Arcade Fire are doing and lacking serious foresight to gather a truly landmark modern release without grasping for air and hoping Tha Carter III is revered as a musical masterpiece someday...that or using up your quota of "perfect" scores for Bruce, Bob, and U2.

I've seen a lot of Springsteen comparisons regarding that band. Then I saw a YouTube video with them performing with him and I realized those two acts have a lot more in common than I originally thought. But yeah, I'm pretty excited, too.

And didn't Kyp Malone have a disc out last year? Did anyone get that?
