M rated games are NOT appropriate for your 5 year old; You'd think this $#!% was common sense

Can't coddle her forever huh? Like worrying about what a video game might do to to her? And she is Canadainain. She can already take down a moose with her bare hands. A gun ain't gonna protect her from the bullet of someone elses.
There's a difference between coddling the poor dear and crippling her while she hasn't the foresight to properly defend herself. See that's one of the many flaws in Canadian Eductation. bullet/bullet deflection techniques have been part of the U.S. p.e. curriculum for the past 60 yrs at least. part of the reason for the dropout rate. Honestly hand to hoof moose combat may as well be teaching fer to knit sweaters for beavers as much as that'll come up.
And the difference between OMG this form of media might be bad for her and sun cancer, sugar, playground equipment injuries, indoor injuries, burns and the list goes on and on are what exactly? Other than the fact it is my responsibility to teach her about things like moderation and safety? And when I deem her mature enough to handle them is it also my responsibility to allow her to learn about them? Or am I supposed to blindly follow what a little letter on a box means? Or what a study might have proved when there is another study that refutes the first's claim? And oh look at you deflecting little 1 ounce bullets. Lets see you take on a 600 pound animal that doesn't travel in a straight line. And has antlers bigger than you are. when you deem her old enough to learn about the sun.
If a one once bullet can handle a rampaging moose they really can't be all that dengerous.

If a one once bullet can handle a rampaging moose they really can't be all that dengerous. Well research has linked skin cancer to the sun so I guess going outside during the day is out of the question for her isn't it? I mean just because millions of people are exposed to the sun's rays everyday and don't suffer any ill effects from it doesn't matter. The research says it's bad so it must be bad. And she doesn't have the foresight to protect herself properly.
And you do know that meese grow those antlers because they to have been studying bullet deflection for the past 100 years. Thats why we take them down barehanded. We did try knives for a while but they kept turning them back on us :(

My God squid, you are a little drama queen, aren't you? No one's saying no video games, just no ultra violent ones at 5 years old. No one's saying no sun, just don't stick her on a beach mid summer for 12 hours with no sun block on. I originally was going to hold my tongue but your arguments at this point are just getting silly.

No that is the ridiculousness of the entire arguement. Parents need to excersise judgement and moderation when it comes to thier kids and video games. They need to know exactly what thier kids are playing and base thier judgements according to that. Not what some letter on a box means. You are coming down because some kid talked about Halo. But have you ever played it?
And if you hadn't been following along that is exactly what Ocyd said ;)

That was just one example and an amusing anecdote. And yes, parents shouldn't just exercise judgment. They should exercise GOOD judgment. Heck, why not hook your kid up with some porn in the afternoons instead of cartoons?

It is OK for a mouse and a cat to repeatedly kill each other but god forbid they see a bewb.

You're just arguing with yourself at this point, aren't you? If you remember, I was the one who said violence was bad for kids from the get go.

If you remember, I was the one who said violence was bad for kids from the get go. No you said " No one's saying no video games, just no ultra violent ones at 5 years old." and then offer up a violent cartoon to take its place. And here is where I see the disconnect between cartoony violence (like Tom and Jerry) and ultra realistic like in an M rated title. It has nothing to do with how real or impossible the violence is. To me it makes no difference between a cartoon cat getting smoked and an alien getting fragged. Where I do have an issue is with a game like GTA or MW2 or Manhunt. I would have an issue with her playing them where I wouldn't have a problem with her playing Halo 3 or Gears of War 2 (with the language filter on). In a game like MW2 or GTA 4 you are not a hero. Your character resides in some moral shade of grey. In Halo or Gears you are the equivilant of Batman or Superman. Your cause is just and righteous. You are fighting not because you want to but because the fate of innocent lives are at stake.

When I was a wee lad, I used to play a little game called Pac Man. After playing it for so long I would pretend I was pac man. I would roll snow balls and eat them while running away from imaginary ghosts. I ate so much snow in a short period of time, causing the excess water to dilute electrolytes and bring about water intoxication which lead to electrical disturbances in my body resulting in erratic neuronal tranmission of signals which can cause death. Luckily, I was taken to the hospital before I died. Video games can kill stupid people.

Guess you were sleep posting when you made this one That wasn't the part I was talking about. I was referring to the part where you had me substituting violent cartoons. You know, the made up part of your statement.
