So I snagged a copy. No instruction book. What do I need to know that the game itself might not tell me (other than expect to have my pants ripped down and get spanked) |

You need to know a lot of stuff. Go here to learn everything... http://www.atlus.com/mediawiki/index.php/Main_Page Some tips from what I've learned the hard way. - Do not ever play online if you want to do World Tendency events. I mean, at all. Being online will mess you up because the game shifts your WT to the average of everybody else. In order to play offline, sign out of PSN before starting the game. When the game asks you to sign in, select cancel and then it will ask again if you want to play in offline mode? Select yes. If WT events aren't important to you, then feel free to play online, but you'll be passing up on some special events and items if you can't complete them for some reason. I thought that I was doing everything right on my previous game, but I had to start over again because being online was enough to screw me out of being able to complete the PWWT events in two worlds. That online shift to the average, over time, messed up my game. - Always do Pure White World Tendency Events first, because it is much easier to get to Pure Black than Pure White. - Always save the game in a level, never in the Nexus! If you ever want to stop playing, and you're in the Nexus, just travel to the beginning of a level and quit there. - Dying in a world will shift your WT to black. If you are trying to do PWWT events, this will screw you. The best way around this is to suicide in the Nexus, then play the entire game in soul form. Only after completing all the PWWT events in a world, will you then want to die in that world to bring down your WT so you can do the PBWT events. - Certain PWWT events and PBWT events aren't all totally exclusive. For example, if you kill Miralda in 1-1 (she shows up in PWWT), this will not change that she'll also show up as Black Phantom Miralda (same place with PBWT), and vice versa. Use the Wiki to see WT events and take the time to study what changes WT in each world. - Never use the Boss Demon Souls. They have special uses, so don't consume them like other types of soldier's souls, etc... I find it best to give them to Stockpile Thomas, just to make sure that you don't use them on accident and only take one back when the time comes that you'll want to use it. - If you want to roll and move quickly, then you cannot equip more than 1/2 of your equipment burden (as found on the status screen). If you max burden is 50, that means you must equip 25 or less to be able to roll quickly. Anything more than 1/2 will slow stamina regeneration. It is up to you to decide what is more important to your play style, defense or mobility. Note: Equipment burden is different than item burden. One is how much you have equipped and the other is how many items you can carry. There are two rings that you can find to help you either equip more or carry more. This is important when it comes to special items found in the world, like full armor sets that can weigh quite a bit and that you'll want to make sure you can carry when you find, because if you leave the level without them, they will be gone forever. - Do not save Ostrava in 1-2 until after you defeat the Tower Knight. He's a bitch of a NPC for many people because he will sometimes die, thus screwing the player out of an item later in the game. When you do save him in any level, be sure to kill all the enemies in his path, just to be sure that he doesn't get himself killed, because that would suck. - Read GameFaqs, a lot! I am there every night reading about this game. I've been playing for quite a while now, but I seem to have new questions almost every day. The people on that board are a big help, and there are few of the regular GF punks there, so everyone is nice and helpful. I think it's because the game is so hard, so people have respect for anyone who needs help, because they needed it to at one point. I'm also here if you have any questions. I'm still playing through the game, so you can also access my knowledge anytime you want. :thumb2: Good luck. Edited by thinkfreemind, Dec 15 2009, 06:04 PM.

You didn't buy a game, you bought a life experience. This is not Final Fantasy, this game doesn't play itself. This game does not hold your hand. This game is confusing and hard, but there is plenty of information online to help you. This game is hardcore, but if you put in the time and effort to learn, this game is very rewarding. I'll help answer any questions you have as best I can though. I know it all seems confusing and that none of what I said above makes much sense right now, but it will with time. I felt completely overwhelmed when I started (like everybody else I imagine), but this game is a learning experience. It has consumed my life, it's all I think about. I am still online every day talking about this game, getting help and helping others; and I haven't even finished my first play-through yet (unlike some people who are new-game++++...). Having played the first half of the game twice though (because of that mistake mentioned above), I've learned a lot. |

Ocyd makes a good point. I don't recommend looking up videos or tips for beating bosses online; the fun is in trying to figure it out for yourself. Many of the bosses can be cheap-shotted with magic or arrows, but the real thrill comes in taking them down, toe to digital toe. Your heart starts pumping and the rush you get after the battle is a feeling that's been sorely lacking in games for a very long time. In a way, Demon's Souls reminds me of two different games mashed together, those being Shadow of the Colossus and Mega Man. Does (did) anyone else here feel the same way? I mean, it's like SotC in the epicness of the boss battles, and like Mega Man in the sweaty handed cautiousness exercised while playing through the levels. |
