Where dreams come to come true.
|
OOH SNAP. Grammys doin' well (as usual). Grammy noms were out like a week ago or something, maybe two days ago. Heck, it may have just happened. Do I know? NO!! What do I know? Well......as usual, it's a celebration of popularity, not necessarily the best in music, but whatever. It's all subjective. I'm sure there are some people who feel Beyonce's I Am...Sasha Fierce really was the best record of the year, ignoring the minor fact it didn't even come out this year. Nothing like giving it up for a 2008 release in 2010, but I'm getting off track. THE NOMS: Record of the Year: - Beyonce "Halo" - Black Eyed Peas "I Gotta Feeling" - Kings of Leon "Use Somebody" - Lady Gaga "Poker Face" - Taylor Swift "You Belong with Me" Winner? I'd say "I Gotta Feeling" wins big. By the way, did they pick these songs out of a freaking hat? "Use Somebody?" "Poker Face?" Seriously? I wasn't aware these were the cream of the crop songs of the year, but... Album of the Year: - Beyonce I Am...Sasha Fierce - Black Eyed Peas The E.N.D. - Lady Gaga The Fame - Dave Matthews Band Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King - Taylor Swift Fearless Nevermind the fact that three of the year's best records were released in 2008, it's about the imaginary numbers created by the Grammy folks that makes it all right. Eligibility dates? October 31, 2008 - August 31, 2009. So it's all right. Huh? What's that? Lady Gaga was actually released on August 12, 2008? Details, details. It wasn't popular by the date last year, but it's popular this year. Exceptions are made! And though I haven't heard the new DMB, and don't much care for them at all, this made it? U2 released "the greatest album possibly ever!" (quote: Rolling Stone), Green Day had this new rock opera, and Bruce and Bob did something this year. But DMB gets the nod? Again, is there a rhyme or reason for this? Winner? I would take Taylor Swift. Beyonce might win though. Still say it's Taylor's year. Song of the Year: - Lady Gaga "Poker Face" - Maxwell "Pretty Wings" - Beyonce "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" - Kings of Leon "Use Somebody" - Taylor Swift "You Belong with Me" From what I gather, this is like the Best Director award at the Oscars, and I gather this award goes to the songwriters instead of the artist, unless Kings of Leon win, then it's basically just like the Oscars. But here's what I don't get, much like the best director award...why would the "record of the year" not also be the best "song of the year?" Oh, Grammys. I'll take...uh..."You Belong with Me" cause it's on the radio all the time. No one even knew Maxwell was still alive, so he has no shot. Best New Artist: - Zac Brown Band - Keri Hilson - MGMT - Silversun Pickups - The Ting Tings Described as: "For a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist." Gotcha. Makes sense. About that, MGMT (who's record I picked up today, by the way. No real clue why, just did, pretty nice) released Oracle Spectacular in January of 2008. I think the Tings Tings released their album early in 2008 as well, but they suck way too much for me to actually research it. This is a tough one, but I wouldn't be surprised to see MGMT take it. This seems to be a pretty weak class as far as new artists go. Still haven't gauged any real lasting power from any of them, but I don't know if Zac Brown Band has any push being a country act, Keri Hilson's record is dull as shit, and The Ting Tings are the worst band since U2. I think...yeah, take MGMT or maybe Zac Brown Band. I'll skip the minor (around here anyway) genres, and go with the relevant ones from here: Bon Jovi are nominated for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals for "We Weren't Born to Follow," like that song doesn't suck enough to actually be rewarded for it. In the same category MGMT are up for "Kids," which makes perfect since too, considering "I've Got a Feeling" (also in this field) was the most popular song of the year, and "Kids" was a marginal rock hit, and barely made the Billboard Hot 100. Gotta admire their edginess. Hall & Oates are nominated in this category too. I'm pulling for them for the upset. In the Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance, we've got Bobby D, Prince, The Boss, John Fogerty, and Neil Young in the old man of the year award. Bruce probably wins, cause he seems the most relevant to me this year. Best Rock Song: - Pearl Jam "The Fixer" - U2 "I'll Go Crazy if I Don't Go Crazy Tonight" (Bono, THIS is why you are my hero.) - Green Day "21 Guns" - Kings of Leon "Use Somebody" - Bruce Springsteen "Working on a Dream" I guess Kings of Leon win cause they're not winning song of the year or whatever category that is. Best Rock Album (Here I'm going to start copying and pasting, cause I'm tired of typing) # Black Ice AC/DC [Columbia] # Live From Madison Square Garden Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood [Reprise/Duck] # 21st Century Breakdown Green Day [Reprise] # Big Whiskey And The Groogrux King Dave Matthews Band [RCA Records / Bama Rags Recordings, LLC.] # No Line On The Horizon U2 [Interscope] That Clapton/Winwood disc annoyed the shit out of me. We played it at work, and I was over it in about three days. Best Alternative Rock Album: # Everything That Happens Will Happen Today David Byrne & Brian Eno [Yep Roc Records] # The Open Door Death Cab For Cutie [Atlantic] # Sounds Of The Universe Depeche Mode [Capitol] # Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix Phoenix [Loyaute/Glassnote Records] # It's Blitz! Yeah Yeah Yeahs [DGC Records/Interscope] If there's any justice, Phoenix will win for all the praise they get, though the record isn't nearly as good as everyone fawns over it as. I would love for Death Cab to win though, if only because they'd win for a throwaway EP of songs that weren't good enough to make their last record that wasn't very good. Seriously? Alternative music was that barren that they couldn't find a better fit than a random ass Death Cab EP? Best Urban/Alternative Performance: # Daykeeper The Foreign Exchange Track from: Leave It All Behind [Hard Boiled Records] # All Matter Robert Glasper & Bilal Track from: Double Booked [Blue Note] # Pearls India.Arie & Dobet Gnahore Track from: Testimony: Vol. 2, Love & Politics [Soulbird/Universal Republic] # A Tale Of Two Eric Roberson, Ben O'Neill & Michelle Thompson Track from: Music Fan First [Blue Erro Soul] # Blend Tonex Track from: Unspoken [Battery Records] Dudde. Do what? Foreign Exchange? If "Daykeeper" doesn't win, there's something seriously wrong. I don't know what the hell urban/alternative is, but "Daykeeper" is a really great track. I haven't heard these other songs, but I bet they're not as good based on how good of a track "Daykeeper" is. Best Rap Solo Performance * Best I Ever Had Drake [Young Money/Cash Money/Universal Motown] * Beautiful Eminem Track from: Relapse [Aftermath/Interscope Records] * D.O.A. (Death Of Auto-Tune) Jay-Z [Roc Nation] * Day 'N' Nite Kid Cudi [Universal Motown/Good/Fool's Gold] * Casa Bey Mos Def Track from: The Ecstatic [Downtown Records] Dude again! If Mos doesn't win, there's something wrong, cause "Casa Bey" is an awesome track, definitely better than the alternatives, by a pretty large stretch now that I look at it... Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group * Too Many Rappers Beastie Boys & Nas [Capitol] * Crack A Bottle Eminem, Dr. Dre & 50 Cent Track from: Relapse [Aftermath/Interscope] * Money Goes, Honey Stay Fabolous & Jay-Z Track from: Loso's Way [Def Jam] * Make Her Say Kid Cudi, Kanye West & Common [Universal Motown/GOOD Music] * Amazing Kanye West & Young Jeezy Track from: 808s & Heartbreak [Roc-A-Fella] Leave it up to Nas to be on a track complaining about too many rappers. I know where Waddle's heart lies. Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (For a Rap/Sung collaborative performance by artists who do not normally perform together. Singles or Tracks only.) * Ego Beyoncé & Kanye West [Music World Music/Columbia] * Knock You Down Keri Hilson, Kanye West & Ne-Yo Track from: In A Perfect World... [MMG/Zone 4/Interscope Records] * Run This Town Jay-Z, Rihanna & Kanye West [Roc Nation] * I'm On A Boat The Lonely Island & T-Pain Track from: Incredibad [Universal Republic Records] * Dead And Gone T.I. & Justin Timberlake Track from: Paper Trail [Grand Hustle/Atlantic] Love this description for this totally pointless award, but "I'm on a Boat" deserves to win because that would essentially award the absurdity of the whole thing. Best Rap Album * Universal Mind Control Common [Geffen] * Relapse Eminem [Aftermath/Interscope] * R.O.O.T.S. Flo Rida [Poe Boy/Atlantic] * The Ecstatic Mos Def [Downtown Records] * The Renaissance Q-Tip [Universal Motown] Jay-Z gettin' hosed. They make an exception for Lady Gaga coming out two months before the requirement dates, but don't let Jay-Z slide for coming out like a week late. I hope Flo Rida wins, because that would again, reward novelty and absurdity for no real good reason. Best Rock Or Rap Gospel Album * The Big Picture Da' T.R.U.T.H. [Cross Movement Records] * Crash Decyfer Down [INO Records] * Innocence & Instinct Red [Essential Records] * Live Revelations Third Day [Essential Records] * The Dash John Wells-The Tonic [Cross Movement Records] Not relevant to anyone here, but I like how they can give an award for "artists who don't usually perform together," but can't be bothered to hand out separate awards for gospel rock and rap albums. Take Third Day, for their stirring rendition of performing an album they released a year earlier live and actually getting award consideration for it. Where's mewithoutYou in this jaint? |

AOTY: This is the best they could come up with? lolgrammys. I haven't listened to DMB, so I'll give it to T-Swizzle. SOTY: Again, har har. If Beyonce wins ANYTHING this year, I will destroy. Eff it, give it to Kings of Leon. Don't care. BNA: Zac Brown Band. Just because "Toes" is one of the greatest country songs ever. Rock Song: Don't care, just as long as it isn't Green Day Rap Solo: As much as I love "Beautiful," gotta give it to "Casa Bey." Drake's gonna win, though. Rap Group: Am I really that predictable? I almost want to go with "Amazing," but given my options I have to go with "Crack a Bottle." Really wish Mos and Kweli's "History" was up. Rap/Sung: Great category . Paper Trail feels like it was FOREVER ago. I want "I'm on a Boat" to win with all my heart. Hov gets screwed, though. Empire State of Mind is the real winner here. Rap album: WHAT?!?! R.O.O.T.S?!?!? Mos or Em wins, I'll be happy. Hell, even Common would be fine with me. Edited by Weidleface, Dec 10 2009, 08:13 PM.
