still can't tell if I'll like a game or not before I buy it. It's always a crapshoot. :(
I wish I could, that would save me money from buying POS like crimson tears and KOF: Maximum Impact
Honestly, you're the closest thing I have to a most trusted reviewer. I've learned our tastes are similar enough in certain regards that if you like something I'm already interested in, I'll probably enjoy it. If you don't, I'll pass.

what am I missing that everyone else loves so much?
probably the fact that your tastes are more specific than the average gamer. I think many folks are happy as long as graphics are nice and the action is "badass."
You know what sucks? The fact I've been gaming for a freaking decade and still can't tell if I'll like a game or not before I buy it. It's always a crapshoot. :(
I've been gaming for 2 and can't tell either.

though we differ at times with individual taste, I think we are similar in that principles piss us off more than technical mistakes or imperfections. I've seen it play out here and at sites all over the internet. I get pissed about things that folks don't ever even notice when they play.

It's often the question of "Why?" with me. "What is the PURPOSE of something being or not being in the game." You've heard them all:

* Why can't I level and customize my character to my liking? What's the point? Oh Difficulty? BS. I have YET to play a game that was "HARD" for reasons other than severe and retarded handicaps enforced on my character.

* Why is this part of the Crystalarianationalum closed off at this point in the story?

* Why does this OPEN WORLD game have a "point of no return" in it? What's the point? Oh, because you know people that play these games are obsessive completionists and we'll miss stuff and have to replay it thus not trading it in causing your publishing company to retain some retail value.

and yada yada yada...

Most of my frustrations are based on principles and my disagreeing with the reasoning of a developer. That's how a technical mess like Two Worlds can become one of my top 3 games of all time on 360. Because it caters to my tastes as far as presentation and gameplay. It's also how an uber awesome title like Call of Duty can get the hate spear from me.

I think the general public is more into the technical presentation.

So when you take all that philosophy as a transparency and place it over how most games are made, you can see why I don't often give out boisterous praise and why it's hard for me to go into a game and know what I'm gonna get.

My recent experience with Arcania was evidence of that. I enjoyed the game. But no where NEAR as much as I thought I would. I knew of the limitations of the game from reading the reviews. What the reviews COULDN'T tell me was just how severe some of those "flaws" were for someone like me.

It's always gonna be a gamble. Having folks like kknd that you trust and know is priceless when it comes to making decisions.

I can usually tell if I'll like a game. I've made a few mistakes, but those have usually been purchases that I've let hype or the game's history (Lunar, Nocturne) influence me on. I really do consider myself to be the pickiest, most frugal gamer I know.

The issue with that is that you then miss out on some of the best experiences. If I played that mentality, I'd never have played Uncharted, Persona 3, Rune Factory, 3 of my favorite franchises.

Where dreams come to come true.
If we're having a frugality measuring contest, I've bought like...three console games this year (won't be higher than four...or give if GT5 actually exists), and Phoenix Wright on my iPhone.

I think maybe I got Soul Nomad this year?

Bottom line: I kick ass. I don't let poorly written IGN reviews dictate my love for item creation simulators.

Not necessarily, because there are tiny things about certain games that can make or break it for me. Take Uncharted, for example. I'm sure it has a great plot and phenomenal graphics and all that jazz, but I despise third-person shooters. I can't think of a single one I've ever enjoyed. That's the same reason why I've never really liked the MGS series. I read reviews and pay attention to progress threads at places like here and PSU to get an idea of the features within the game that are selling points for me: character customization, plot, etc.

And exiting to the cotton pickin menu does NOT save the game. Just lost 20 minutes of game time. :(
It tells you that before you exit back to the main menu.

I am now 52 hours into Fallout: New Vegas, yet I still have not yet been to the strip. Instead, I have been wandering the wasteland, searching for places to explore and getting stronger along the way. At this point, it has been decided that my character is a sniper, primarily because I am really good at, but also because that is just how I prefer to play any game that gives me a gun, slow and methodical.

Yesterday, I happened upon Vault 11, which is the first one I've been to. It was very creepy and so far has been the best part of the entire game. I can't say too much about it, for spoiler sake, but I absolutely loved the conclusion of this area. At first I was like :lol2: , but then I was like  , and finally I was like  .

Just before stopping for the night, I headed back to the starting point of Goodsprings, to search around for any places that I missed exploring near the start of the game, which is fun, but there is now no challenge, because I suppose that I should have explored these areas much earlier. Oh well, I am still having a blast playing this game.

Just got to the last level in Disgaea... I just discovered the beauty of item, something that I never used before :P (I wonder how I managed to beat Phantom Brave :P) I can't wait to get over with it though. I also played some Etrian Odyssey II and pokemon SS (got my first badge, mew is owning so far :D)

About 70% through PoP: SoT. The game basically splits into 3 sections: platforming, puzzling, fighting. Platforming is great. Controls suck and camera sucks, but when they gel, platforming is awesome. Fighting is blech/ meh. It's kind of cool the first couple of times, but you'll mainly use the same two moves over and over (flip and stab or freeze stab) depending on the enemy. The puzzling is horrendous. It has 0 direction and rooms that need to be "solved" mostly by jumping around randomly until you find what's within range (which shifts depending on the room) or what's scale-able. And when they have an actual puzzle room? Forget it. You'll want to turn off the game.

The one thing I HATE in games above all else is not being able to continue. Whether it's because of an absurd boss ala RPGs or because I have no freaking clue what to do ala a lot of this game, it drives me nuts.

1 week til Rune Factory 3. I'd buy it right away, but RF2 came out about the same time last year and went heavy on sale for Black Friday. So I guess I'll hold out for a couple weeks. :(

Playing Prof. Layton 3 until Jak arrives in the mail. I'd be more into it if my mind wasn't so stressed about the GRE and drawing parallels.

Fock this parrot. This minigame is terrible. Luckily, the other two aren't bad (the race car one is even quite fun) and the rest of the game is spot freaking on. ;)

But that parrot? :x
