Aela sat cross legged on a slab of stone. She stared out over the seemingly endless ocean as the waves crashed against the craggy shore. She closed her eyes, palms face up on her knees. She reached out with her senses like she had a thousand times, feeling both the powerful wind blowing in off the sea and the minute changes in air currents from the way the rock formations stood in their path. It was then that she felt a distinct ripple that seemed to come from nowhere and everywhere. Before she had time to process, she felt another ripple, and this one came from the west. She grinned mischievously and stood from her meditation. "Finally, the relics are awake."

~ * ~

Aela stepped out of the small wooden temple, squinting into the bright sun and shielding her face. She had followed the path of the ripple across two continents and half a dozen island chains to get here, but she could tell she was close. She looked around at the tall palm trees and bustling dirt road and calmly slipped into the foot traffic.

The center of town hosted a bustling market, filled with the cries of hawkers and the smells of food. She wound her way through the crowd, elbows jostling her and shoulders... shouldering her. She forced her way to the front of the crowd and saw a man hand over money to the stall owner. In his other hand, he held a pointy golden amulet with metalwork that formed an ornate eye in the center.

"STOP!" She yelled, gesturing towards the man.

He looked shocked and started to back away.

"No, wait!" She said, belatedly realizing she might be coming on a little too strong.

The man hesitated for a moment, then turned and ran.

Aela took off after him, leaping over a cluster of people as she rushed after him.

A small bird swooped between Aela and the man. Emerald green light shown off the black bird wings, blinding her, and she swatted at the pesky creature. It sped up, quickly gaining on the leader of this small, informal race.

The man deftly dove around carts and other villagers that he threw down in the way behind. He didn't know why this crazy lady was chasing him but he wasn't about to find out.

In one misreach, he overextended his hand holding the eye amulet, to knock a stack of firewood over behind him, the bird was quick to grab it and dart in front on him.

It sat there for only a second thought, because it took only a second for the bird to be a boy whose wondrous eyes looked fancifully on the amulet.

The purchaser of the trinket wasn't too far behind the bird boy, in fact the bird boy had transformed just a few feet in front of the man who was now barreling full force into the distracted boy.

A stranger in a brown cloak watched the commotion from afar, piercing green eyes watching the apparent scuffle with curiosity and confusion. Pipit had no desire to get involved if he could help it, and instead shuffled slightly closer just so he could get a better look at the action.

Admittedly, he was drawn to whatever object this fight was over. It was an attractive piece of jewelry, and one of high quality as well. Perhaps that's what sparked the fight?

Oh well. Pipit leaned against a wall, wondering just what would happen next.

Aela was mid-jump when she saw the man run full tilt into a boy crouching in the street. The two sprawled to the ground and the amulet flew high into the air. Time seemed to slow down as Aela reached forward, her hand curling around the amulet and clutching it to her chest. Her eyes flared with light and electricity crackled up her arm.

A smile spread across her face, only to be dashed with her hopes as she watched a heel swing through the air and knock the amulet from her hands.

All eyes watched the amulet skip across the ground like a stone on water. Aela's eyes flicked back to the heel and traced it up a leg to see who had just kicked her hand. A black haired boy about her age dressed in monk robes grinned cheekily at her. He used the toe of his sandals to flip the amulet into the air, catching it neatly in the palm of his hand. "The real players have entered the game now, you amateurs may all go home now."
