"Which rumour are you referring to, Lord Garisa? There are countless grapevines regarding the death of the Baroness, from ones that might be mistaken for fairy tales to somethings which can only be perpetrated by a genius assassin." Beatrice said eloquently. She was still ambivalent about letting the Council know about the truth. If she was unlucky, someone from the three here might actually be culpable for Lorelei's death. She didn't want to doubt the Council, but she could not dismiss the possibility. She did not know what to say next. |

"I'm talking about the demands of the people to know about the ones assuming leadership, and the true reason of the Baroness' death." "And I agree that we need information from you, Beatrice, regarding the details of her death." That may sound curt, coming from Garisa. |

"Why are we suddenly getting so superstitious? The Baroness is dead, and that's it," Malleus cut through Krohzen and Garisa's questioning. "If those idiots really think that happenings around a dead body is cause enough to mount a rebellion, they really must be a few sandwiches short of a picnic." He twirled his first finger at the side of his head and let out a cynical laugh, before turning his stare to Beatrice, as if asking her to tell them the truth - which should not be extraordinary at all. |

"Our task here is actually to carry out the duties that have been given to us to govern this village, not to inquire any other unrelated information. But I know we are all humans and we seek to know why we must carry the task in the first place. After all, if the Baroness were not to die, we wouldn't be here talking about the well-being of our fiefdom. And since the three of you have pointed it out for me. I will gladly explain to you." She spoke in a matter-of-fact manner. Beatrice seemed to be gathering her courage to talk. She tried her hardest so as not to show anything on her face. She calmed herself down and started to speak, "The scene, it was the most grotesque sight I have ever seen. Blood was everywhere. The deep stabbed wound on the Baroness' chest stood among other small scratches found throughout her body. Struggle was apparent in the room and the windows to outside was broken." She intentionally contradicted all the facts about Baroness' death to see the reaction from the other members of the Council. It was the most sensible decision she could think of within seconds that she had. If someone actually knew something about the truth, it would most likely show in his response. And even if she couldn't identify any discrepancy from their reactions, it might be a good thing to let the fabricated story be the truth until she and Frederica discovered the real truth. |

Garisa was taken aback by Beatrice's statement. He never knew that the Baroness' death was a gruesome one. Had he known, he would've kept his guard up these few days. Whoever the killer was, his aim would be a status quo, and instability. Although thankfully, the Baroness had a card up her sleeve, it does not mean the killer would stop there. Would the Council members be the next targets? That should not be the concern of this meeting, though, Garisa told himself. They should be more concerned about the uprisings, as Beatrice indirectly pointed out. "Had her death been more peaceful, it would be in our interests to inform about the manner of her death to the people. In this case, though, we need to create a lie. I suggest we should, in order to quell any uprisings, tell them that the Baroness died a natural death, so that the people will not fear. It would be logical, since the Baroness had been of weak constitution. "As much as I grieve over this manner of death of hers, I agree that we should not talk about this matter any longer. Therefore, I hereby propose a law concerning Puhilsgar's stability."
"Regarding the death of Baroness, it is best if someone would assume the responsibility of investigation. That is all." |

Now Krohzen was seriously frowning; he realised his body had leaned forward, but he did not try to cover it. The Baroness was killed! And he had not heard anything about it! And- And before he could react, Garisa had already talked of new laws. Krohzen shifts back into his chair. Judging again. The other three members of the Council seemed to be taken aback by Beatrice's statement, but... there is something wrong in here, Krohzen thought. Beatrice spoke of the Baroness' manner of death, which she said was most grotesque, but she was only looking down, without the slightest frown or disturbance on her face. As if she wanted to quickly get over this issue. Moreover, Garisa immediately agreed with her, and the conversation went straight into new laws, as if preventing further inquiry (of his) into the matter. Strange indeed... are the two of them hiding anything? Krohzen decided that he could not make any conclusions yet; he went on with their ploy, putting up traps and trials as he spoke. "I agree with Lord Garisa on his first point; we cannot afford more uprisings on this issue." He stared hard at Garisa, then at Beatrice. He smiled slightly. "I suppose there may be some other people with you, Lady Beatrice, who saw the Baroness' condition on her death, as well as those who helped in cleaning up her body. What have you, or what will you do to them? As you know we may need to be thorough in... silencing them." He hoped he could get names, information of any sort on the matter; he may even ask the Thieves' Guild later to do the research on his bidding. He had the feeling that something is amiss, and is hidden by either Beatrice, Garisa, or worse, both of them. He hoped he was wrong. He paused for a while, letting the question sink in. Then he turned to Garisa. "With regards to your second and third point, Lord Garisa, I agree that we will need to proclaim our control, for the sake of stability. The Levium will be ready, just in case any of you need additional manpower." Edited by Scorpio, Sunday 13-09-2009, 02:52.

So, the Baroness was assassinated. That's certainly surprising - although quite acceptable. People would do anything for the most meager amount of power, and the control of a fiefdom was certainly no small power. There could also be a possibility that they wanted to spread chaos and create instability, but... "No, wait a minute," Malleus spoke. "I don't think we need to calm the people. Let's just tell them the truth." He continued, after a moment of silence from the rest of the council members. "Before all of you think that I've gone insane, consider this. If, some way or another, they find out the truth, they would certainly be... not pleased at us, for keeping them in the dark." "If the assassins want to create panic and disorder through this murder, I say we take this trump card of theirs and turn it against them." Malleus smirked. "We can use this incident to unite the people, instead. Tell them that we are in a crisis, and the only way to survive is to stay vigilant against an unseen enemy." "Instead of a chaotic rabble, whoever behind this killing will find a united Puhilsgar - united by fear, but united nonetheless." He concluded in a satisfied tone.

"Malleus, your opinion certainly cannot be discounted." Garisa thought hard. Maybe this knowledge will make everything stable. Malleus is certainly correct. Maybe, after all, we shouldn't hide it from the people. Garisa straightened his posture. "I changed my mind, after listening to Malleus. We should tell the truth to the people. Hence, I cancel my proposal. "Were we to tell them about this, we need more information and details from you, Beatrice." |

"Hmm, that is actually a very viable idea indeed. So far I've only thought that it's just a murder too gruesome to be told. But after lsitening to the implication of telling the truth, I finally realized that we can use this as our advantage instead." Beatrice said that as if she really believe in her own story and consider the idea brilliant. With this, no one else will question the real condition of the Baroness at her death and she can safely trying to discover the truth with the help of her trusted friend as well as Baroness' only aide, Frederica. She had made a promise to Frederica and to herself that she will surely find the cause of her death, no matter how thorny the road may be. She had made her decision and she would not back out regardless of the ramifications. "All right, I will start my reminiscence about Baroness' death. ... I ask all of you to pray for her that she will be accepted at the Omniscient's side and that she may guide us in carrying our duties." |

"My condolences." Garisa thought he had seen every possible way of dying during his stay in the army. Maybe he was too conceited. Torn left hand, slit right wrist and neck. Missing right eye and shredded calves. Three stabs on the abdomen, ruptured airpipe, and bleeding pelvis. Trace of maglyp poison and ghund acid. Horrible. "Either the Baroness tried to defend herself, or the assassin was a particularly sadistic one. "I am for Malleus' proposal." |

The murder, described in such vivid details by Beatrice, was so gruesome that Krohzen even wondered what the Baroness had done to receive such violent attack. He reminded himself to stay focused on the conversation, though. Now Malleus had proposed to let people know of the Baroness' gruesome murder, to unite them against an unseen enemy. Lord Garisa had also agreed to the proposal. "I... agree that a country, with a population united by fear, is easier to control. However, we need to be extra careful... I have seen trained soldiers running for their lives, stampeding enemies and brothers alike. None of us here wishes to see such violence on the streets, I hope. Besides, letting people know that there is a loose assassin with skills great enough to take down the most powerful person in Puhilsgar, with such guile that he or she managed to evade ALL our search efforts so far... it is a big news. To speak the truth, even I dare not predict the outcome of such a manoeuvre. At the very least, it will deter some investors from our region. At most... let's not talk about it. Please reconsider." |

"Well, that's what your soldiers are for, I suppose," Malleus smirked at Krohzen. "Enforcing safety and order shouldn't be too much of a problem for them, should it?" "At least, they can do something useful for a change," he muttered under his breath. "And, about investors," he added, "Our region is not that attractive, you see. I don't think things will change as much, even with strange news abound. In fact, when we show them that we're still able to produce and do business with them as usual, despite threats like this, they will flock to us - we'll prove to them that we're a source of constant supply, no matter what happens." He stopped for a while, gauging the reaction from other council members. Just in case that they're still not convinced, Malleus sighed and continued his suggestion. "Still, if you're that much concerned, we can conclude trading agreements with other regions. Binding agreements," the head of the Farmer Guild emphasized, "that will force them to keep buying from us, regardless of how many lunatic assassins are on the loose." |

Garisa wanted to say all of that. However, that would significantly place Garisa outside his supposed calm, collected persona, so he decided for a much shorter alternative. "Lord Krohzen, it is as Malleus noted. Not many investors are interested in Puhilsgar. This would not significantly impede our economy, as long as the citizens are still willing to work." |

"Well," Krohzen answered. "If that is the case, then perhaps I had worried too much. If you have such trust upon our citizens, then I believe we will be able to pull this off safely. We can proceed, then, with the disclosure of the matter on the Baroness' death. My men will be at the ready." |

As Krohzen finished his answer, the village bell rang loud and clear. It was the same bell that has served Puhilsgar for 52 years, marking the start of each evening for Puhilsgar. "Good timing. "Since we have come to an agreement, and since the evening bell has been sounded," Garisa stood. "Should we end the meeting proper?" |
