Name: Culgan Age: 28 Star: Tengou (Conflagration) Hometown: L'Renouille, Highland Occupation: Captain in Highland's Fourth Army Weapon: Deigh / Reota / Caisean-Reota (One-Handed Sword) Culgan's sword at first glance appears to be a standard Highland blade, but it has it's own unique flair and accents to it. The blade is taken care of in an almost obsessed fashion, and reflects light with a soft glow. The hilt is one solid piece built around the blade, stained a faded regal blue wrapped in perforated leather made from local Manta-Ray hide, with several decorative carvings. The handle it's self works perfectly with the make of the blade to balance out the weight and allows for ease of use with one hand. This blade was commissioned years ago by Culgan's grandfather from a famous swordsmith in Harmonia. While not a soldier of note, he served Robert Blight dutifully during the war with precise tactics and a fierce fighting style. When the blade was at it's best, many claimed the silver blade radiated a soft, azure glow. Runes: Head - Sealed Left Hand - Sealed Right Hand - - Flowing RuneClass and MP: Runic Fighter, 8/6/4/2 Character Description: ![]() Culgan’s stature is easily defined as solid and almost statue-esque, at 6’ and 186 pounds; he has exceptional body tone and muscular strength hidden beneath those clothes. Silver hair pushed back, with just enough bangs to lightly frame his face. Piercing gray eyes, with a sharp and chiseled, handsome face. Culgan is usually wearing a serious look about him, but is always courteous and respectful of those around him. He isn't afraid to smile but doesn't wear it often. His attire is made up of white slacks, black knee-high leather boots, and a thin, long-sleeved white tunic, on top of that is a thin but durable chain-mail vest. Over that, is his signature sable-black overcoat with white accents. Built into that is his cape, black on the outside, white on the inside. On the opposite side, down his chest, is two dangling pieces of cloth with blue tips. He finishes this look with thin white gloves, and a white ascot, pinned with a single blue jewel. Biography: Culgan was born in the Solar Year 432, in the middle of the Highland-Jowston War between Robert Blight and Darell. Culgan's father and grand-father were both fighting gallantly for Robert, working alongside the hero, Han Cunningham. Near the end of the war, Culgan's grandfather, Leonard, was to be knighted and given a surname for his commendable services. However, by the year 434, Robert Blight died and his son Agares took the throne. As soon as this happened, he quickly sued for peace, ending the war, leaving Han to take the glory. Leonard's knighting was looked over and pushed back several times before it was out-right canceled, being told that King Agares wished to promote peace and wouldn't recognize soldiers for the atrocity of war. Leonard continued to serve however, for the country of Highland, not for the king, while his son, Kelvin, was reassigned to the royal guard, bringing him much closer to his son, Culgan. Culgan's early memories of his father were few and scattered over the years, but they were fond ones. Several years later, Kelvin was sent along for a ceremony in Muse with Agares, Sara, and Luca Blight, on their return trip however, they were ambushed by bandits. Kelvin did his best to fight them off with the other guards, even allowing Agares to escape, but the soldiers were just too rattled from the surprise of the attack. Culgan was 11 when his family received the word that Kelvin, had died protecting the king. Stricken with grief and anger, Leonard outright insulted Agares for wasting his son's life and resigned from his position. Together with his daughter-in-law, the two did their best to raise Culgan to be the man he is today, a well-groomed, respectful man. Leonard would tutor the boy in the ways of the court, history, dueling, battles, tactics, and wars. Culgan took to these topics with eagerness, longing for a connection to his heritage. His mother, Laura, cultured the boy with schoolwork, runology, music, dancing, proper speaking, and art. He struggled at first, but was well on his way to becoming better then many aristocrats of his status, even acting more refined then some nobles. At the age of 20, he was expected to marry a prominent family, to help bring some status and wealth into his own, dying house. Despite his refined nature and skills as a 'gentleman', Culgan was often unsure how to relate to many of the noble women he was set up with by the families. Eventually the pressure was beginning to eat at the boy and despite his grandfather's protests to serve a 'coward', Culgan enlisted in the Highland Military. After a bitter and later understanding argument, Leonard respected his decision, knowing where the boy's heart laid, and gave him his own personal sword, Deigh. Here, his dedication finally shown through, he was always respected and courteous with the nobles, but here he felt he was really doing something. His skills with a blade were put to the test first, he was an extremely talented fighter in his own right, out-dueling several equals and even one of the officers. Next he showed his powers with a rune, namely the Water and Lightning Runes, performing both healing and assault spells at the most opportune times. But despite all this, he remained the modest, respectful gentleman of Highland. Culgan skills were put the test quickly in border skirmishes, dealing with bandit armies along their borders, and the occasional pirate raids on Highland's only port-city. It was during one such time, that Culgan's captain fell in battle after wiping out a third of the platoon, fighting bandits on the northern border with Matilda and Harmonia. Not ready to die or branded a coward, Culgan took charge and through a strategy Leonard taught him, the platoon successfully routed the bandits with only a few casualties. This served as Culgan's first feat of prowess in the eyes of the army, and he was appointed the rank of Captain, under command of Solon Jhee, in Highland's 4th Royal Army. It was during this time that he met Seed, who was promoted only recently to the same rank in the 4th army. Despite the vast contrast between their personalities, the two were often seen working together in a friendly manner. While both agreed Solon wasn't the best of leaders, the two worked in tandem to keep the army's 'head' above water, Culgan's strategies, Seed's passion and connection to the troops, and Solon's lopsided inspiration to the troops. Culgan still lives at home with his mother and grandfather, and still attends social events and the like. He has had much time to think over the years and agrees that Agares is nothing more then a coward with a crown, but would never say that. However the 'Mad Prince' didn't get that title for his dancing styles, leaving Culgan to worry about the future of his country. Personality: From his upbringing, his calm demeanor would be expected, Culgan keeps his emotions in check, remaining calm, composed. He takes this mentality even further with his realistic decision making, level-headed composure, and he is always thinking ahead and planning out what consequences his actions will have in the long run. Many brash soldiers see this has cowardice, but those same troops are always the ones limping home, if they even make it back. Culgan has a deep leadership talent that just comes naturally to him, along with keeping an eye out for survival of himself and troops, without sacrificing the honor or dignity of Highland. Culgan also shows disdain for force when it is unnecessary, and would suggest a peaceful surrender despite military domination. However, he will perform his best even if it is a war of attrition, bringing almost holistic properties of war to the field. He keeps his cool and shows no sign of weaknesses during battle. Sometimes coming off cold and distant, but is ever faithful to his country before King and Crown. In duels and battle, he fights with a style that is both calm and controlled, however, when backed into a corner Culgan can gain many attributes of a dire wolf, making him even deadlier then usual. Culgan carries many of these traits from his normal interaction with others, even using several of these ideals in the court. He makes it a habit to keep himself well informed of the 'going-ons' of the court to protect his family, self, and close friends from the sharp tongues of haughty nobles. He has a strong natural morality, and understands the world to be in beautiful shades of not just gray, but color as well. He does his best to look out for both friend and 'ally' alike on the field, and often acts as an 'older brother' to them; looking out and aiding where he can, but letting them stand on their own feet. Above all Culgan is most likely one of the more rational Highlanders around, save the Windamiers. Prologue (RP Sample): "Culgan, what's wrong? Eat the grapefruit or don't." A woman said. Older then the man she was addressing, but younger then the other other gentleman at the table. They were eating brunch in the sun room by their inner courtyard, servants standing nearby. The white-haired man known as Culgan placed his grapefruit spoon on the napkin, deciding he was done with it. "Something doesn't feel right today, is all. I can't help but feel something strange." He raised his eyebrows before lowering one. "Not really a sense of dread but... something else." As he tried to find the words his eyes wandered towards his grandfather, who was evening him with a hint of demented excitement. After a moment of silence, he spoke, "...What did you do?" The old man cleared his throat with a chortle. "You missed the messenger this morning." His smile behind the beard became clear. "King Agares is hosting a ball tomorrow night, for all nobles and all ranking officer's in his army." The reaction on Culgan's face was evident. "Please tell me you didn't... Leonard, I'd appreciate it if you ran these things by me first." He sighed, motioning for an attended to take his breakfast. "Who is it? Not the Lady Novak, I told you what happened last time." "No, better." the old man said, taking a bite from his jellied toast. Culgan sighed, "It better not be Sorel's little sister. She's just as demented." he laid his napkin down in disgust. "I wouldn't set you up with a 'younger sister', especially when the older is marrying into the Jhee family." "Well then what?" "It's the Halvern sisters, the new family from Harmonia. Heiresses to a famous antique trade routes of Harmonia." Culgan sighed again, unsure what he could do. "I haven't even met them, and I'm not going with both." "It's all been taken care of, you'll Seed will be the other date, I've already arranged it with the family." Leonard began nodding to himself. "But you didn't run it by Seed... " He stood up, defeated. "If I have to make him suffer with me, let's at least buy his attire for the evening." "To the carriage!" The old man shouted, acting as wily as ever. Culgan looked to his mother, to which she only giggled slightly in response. "You boys have fun. Please indulge your grandfather, who knows how long he has left." "Of course." Culgan tugged at his black overcoat, brushed it off, and took his leave, dreading the day ahead. Edited by Culgan, Mon Sep 6, 2010 3:48 pm.
