The MIA Soldier
Name: Riou
Age: 15
Star: Tenkai, The Chief Star of Heaven
Hometown: Kyaro, Highland
Occupation: Unicorn Brigade Soldier

Weapon: Twin Fang / Twin Heaven Fang / Twin Destiny Fang (Twin Tonfa)

Through his years of training, Riou showed only promise with hand to hand combat, the youth was unbalanced with staffs and spears, and clumsy with a sword, the boy was limited in what he could use. However Genkaku wished to advance his son's studies and give him something unique. To this end Genkaku went through his closets of weapons and found a pair of Tonfa for Riou to practice with. The tonfa are crafted from a study, foreign wood, stained in a thick lacquer, with metal tips at the ends and covers at the opposite end for added damage with punches. they are held in each fist, by a handle crafted of the same wood. These weapons work best in a pair, and as such are used in not just punches, but by spinning the weapons around, using the momentum of both the user and the weapons. At higher levels the tonfa are coated in a deeper, stronger lacquer and refitted with refined steel tips, and later, a mystic ore.

Riou stands around 5'8" roughly, with a slim athletic build from his extensive days training through-out his childhood. His gentle face shows his youth, free from the stains of war and a difficult life, despite the struggles of his youth. His eyes, depending on the light, can appear at times a deep, dark brown, or a warm hazel, full of life and optimism. His hair falls into a simple part down the middle, with a few bangs wind-swept up out of his face, it's cut short along the sides and back with the top reaching just above his ears.

Riou wears a simple, golden circlet, around his neck, a plain yellow scarf, tied in the front. Short socks, unseen to most, are worn under his tan leather boots, and the boy wraps his hands with bandage before putting on his matching leather gloves. Riou finishes this ensemble with short, black cloth pants, a simple white sleeveless shirt, and his signature fighting robe, cut just above the knees and worn off center, held in place with a white belt bound in the back.

Biography:

Riou doesn't know who his original parents were, or where he is from, he doesn't even know his proper birth-date. His youngest memories are of being found by Genkaku and Nanami, memories of smoke and crimson. Riou remained a silent boy for many years after, remembering nothing before the two found him. Eventually though, the boy couldn't care less about the past, and relished in his family, a gentle yet strict father, a doting yet tom-boy of a sister. Early on the two fought over who was actually the eldest, since neither of them knew when their birthday was. Nanami won and so she became the big sister, Riou didn't mind too much, she was taller then him at the time.

Years past, the siblings began to train under the tutelage of their father, learning the basics of combat. Genkaku never gave a clear reason why he knew these things, or why he wanted to pass them on, he only claimed it was a hobby and something to help focus the two. Early on, one a usual day of practice, Riou noticed a little boy watching them practice their martial arts, eager to find out who he was, Riou stopped and approached the other youth, Jowy Atreides. Nanami and Genkaku followed and their family became even larger from that day forward.

The two boys became inseparable from then on, through thick and thin, they always had each other, and the two had many adventures. From childhood fights with the other children, to peeping over the wall into the Blight Manor, catching glimpses of Jillia Blight, and hiding secret treasures. On one of these, Riou ended up lost in the forest north of Kyaro, separated from Jowy, who cried to Genkaku to find him, and continued to do so untill Riou was found.

Jowy began training with the others soon too, showing promise with a staff and the sword, but upon Genkaku's insistence, Jowy focused his efforts on the bo staff. The two friends would often spar, ending in several ties and even matches, they learned from each other and laughed together.

Years passed has they always do, and Genkaku became ill... and eventually passed away. The trio of Nanami, Jowy, and Riou were grief-stricken for a time, but eventually they came to terms with it. In his honor, and from a lack of funds, they tried to reopen the dojo they had called home, but, no one in Kyaro seemed interested in martial arts, and soon they closed the dojo once again. After that, Riou got it in his head to join the military, Jowy decided to follow him, and they made haste to join the Youth Brigade corps stationed in Kyaro, under command of Captain Rowd.

They followed orders diligently, and showed the most promise as soldiers, both with their endurance and their battle prowess, beating several of their equals in combat and ended up in a dead tie with each other. From there they went on several camping exercises along the border, and on one fateful night at the Tenzen Pass, they were attacked. No one knew where the came from, or how they sneaked into Highland's territory, but there was no time to think, Rowd rushed the boys towards the only exit, east of the camp. Yet, skeptical, Jowy stopped and wished to inform their Captain of this foolish idea. Before they had time though, a few archers had put the boys in their cross-hairs and the boys fled back to the west, then north to a cliff overlooking a waterfall. The two had little time and leapt towards the river below, by bad luck though, the archers hit their mark.

The boys, lived however, barely surviving, found washed ashore by a strange man with long, dark hair.

Personality:

A curious and eager boy in his youth, these traits still shine through to this day. Riou isn't what one would say "happy-go-lucky" but he is still a positive and at times allowing it, cheerful. Above all Riou keeps a certain level of patience in his actions, but not a great decision maker. Riou is outwardly trustful of others, showing his naivete and youth. He only wants the best for others and himself, and will ensure that both the actions and results meet such demands. Riou's sense of justice is a bit skewed, unable to see the world in simple right and wrongs, and only suggest what he feels is 'right' in his heart, in his actions and suggestions to others. Riou is humble to many, but will gladly rise to the need of others if they are in danger.

RP Sample:

The howling wind whipped several brown strands of the youth's hair across his brow, waving rhythmically as he ran along the path, west. Everything, everything they had just known had been destroyed. Everyone of their friends, now lay dead, when just moments ago they ran past them, alive.

'How could this happen?'

They continued onward, arriving at the former camp, now set ablaze, the first fires of war. The dancing crimson and amber struck a distant memory in the boy's mind, a fear he hadn't felt in ages, a fear he felt confused and familiar with. He slowed to a walk, then stopped dead in his tracks, reaching towards the base with one arm, longing for an answer. Behind him though, several feet moved through the brush, followed by an odd twinge in his ear. "No... We can't stop here." he muttered, looking to his friend. He nodded in response and the two continued along the path, turning right, the only exit they had.

The darkened trees hovered beside them, a disturbing blur of adrenaline as the two could only look forward, coming to a complete stop. A dead end, a steep cliff overlooking the river and a waterfall. The youth in red looked behind him, unsure. The sound from before by the camp returned with a renewed vigor, the Jowston soldiers had them.

"Riou... We're going to have to jump," the blond youth announced, pulling a dagger from his gear. He walked over towards a large rock, embedded in the cliff face. "If we get separated we'll meet up back here, O.K.?" He turned to face the rock, raised the knife as someone yelled.

"There those little bastards are! Get them!"

"They've caught up already?! We don't have any more time! Let's go!" He hid the knife and ran over to Riou, grabbing his hand.

"Not so fast, Highland scum!" one of the archers shouted, readying his weapon behind the cover of trees. "Fire!"

The arrows whistled through the air, several missing. Two however, struck home. Riou gasped in pain as one of the arrows skimmed across his side, he lost his breath has he hit the water. The other arrow hit Jowy in the shoulder, Riou could barely make it out as everything began to turn black.

----

"Nnnnng..." The youth muttered.

'Black... spinning, everything was spinning...' his thoughts drifted in and out of awareness.

"Am... I ...? Where..." his lids slowly began to open, finding the aged ceiling of his room. He tried to focus on a single, large crack, trying to make out each and every turn it took before fading out. In a twinge of pain, he shut his eyes as if to protect them, before slowly opening them again. Blinking several times, he began to realize what happened, and tried to adjust his body in the bed he was placed within.

'Saved.'

The words echoed in his mind. He had been saved from death. A chill ran up his spine from the thought of the cold river. By some miracle, he was alive. He slowly sat up, feeling sore all over and with it, a twinge of pain in his side. "Ahh." his hand ran instinctively towards the pain, feeling the stiff bandages underneath his soft, white pajamas. "That's right... the arrow, it hit me as we fell." He paused again, rubbing his side as if it would serve as a reminder. "We...we...Jowy?!" He looked to his left, across the room, in search of his friend. Nothing, the room was much smaller then he first realized.

He looked down towards the sheets, in doubt and concern of what fate might had befallen his best friend. He sat there, losing track of time, it wasn't until a lady wearing an earthen dress walked in the door way, did he change his gaze. "Well hello, glad to see you're awake." She eyed him for a moment before walking in with a small bucket of water and several rags. "Here." she handed him a one of the rags, slightly damp. "For your face." she chuckled, setting the bucket on the floor and pulled up the near-by stool. "I wasn't sure you'd wake up. You had us worried for quite a while."

The youth took the rag gently, and began to pat it across his brow. "Thank you... Um... was there someone else with me?"

"Someone?" She blinked for but a moment, before figuring it all out. "Ah, you're friend, that long haired fellow." She smiled and nodded. "Yes, he's in the other room, just woke up actually, though he still needs some rest, and food too." The brown haired, boy sighed with relief.

'He survived... thank goodness.' he thought, wiping the sleep from his eyes.

"Now, turn over, I need to change your bandage. Then we'll get you some food." The boy blushed for a moment before cooperating, and removed his shirt. "There's a nice tomato soup today, helped make it myself, I did." She laid her hands gently on the bandages, looking for an easy place to begin. "Brace yourself, we remove 'em fast in my family!" He grunted, not sure how he felt about some woman touching him, let alone ripping bandages off his ribs. He held back a yelp, biting his lip. "Oh it's almost over. Oh, by the way, what's your name?"

"Um... It's Riou."
