So, today at school, aero and I were discussing how she feels about Ponyboy. It seems like alot of people either don't like him, or just feel kind of neutral about him. I like him. He's not my favourite, at least right now, but he just seems like that cute kid down the road who I'd hang out with sometimes, you know? How do you feel about the person telling The Outsiders? Love him? Hate him? Couldn't care less? |

Personally, I really like Ponyboy. I can kind of see why people don't like him, but I don't understand how people can hate him. I'm a Pony actvist ![]() I guess people think he's whiny or something, but I don't really see how he is. |

I love Ponyboy. He's got the typical mind of a teenager, in my opinion. If people would write him other then a whiny fourteen-year-old, then perhaps a lot more people would appeal to his character. He describes people/things the way he sees them, and he, obviously, doesn't use his head. I'm the same age as him in the novel, so I understand a lot of why he thinks Darry doesn't care for him. Although I use my head a bit more, he's still really smart. I can only imagine how tough it must be to live on the East side, have a fear of getting jumped, and being taunted day-by-day by Socs. I wish I had more inspiration to write him, but I just don't. He's a fun character - and not just because he's so darn easy to write. |

I think it's more the age that Pony's at more than his personality for me. Yeah, he's whiney, and at times, annoying as hell. He reminds me a lot of my cousin. But the kid lost both his parents, and I'm around the same age as Ponyboy. I would loath an older sibling suddenly to be in charge of me, going from the "fun" brother to the parential figure is not an easy shift, and I know my kid brother and sister would give me hell if I was in Darry's position. When I read TWT, TIN, I almost wasn't convinced that was our Pony. He seemed to mature quite a bit. So I think when he gets older, I would like him a lot more. Just my take on it. |

I find that if I'm to write a Outsiders fanfic in 1st person, I have to write it in his perspective because the only other person I can see telling their story (realistically) is Darry, and I find him boring, so I don't wanna write about him haha. And I feel the same way about what you said about how its easy to relate to him, because hes a typical young teenager with a rough life. It must be confusing and scary. |

That's how I feel too. He's mature in ways, but he needs to mature in a lot of other ways, and then he'll start appealing to alot of those who thinks he's whiney abit more. |

Wut? No Pony hate? I was certain there would be a need for a rant in Pony's defense. Ah, well. I'll say this as many times as I have to: I love the kid. He can be whiny and bratty, sure, but what teenager isn't whiny and bratty? I know I am. He has trouble seeing things through others' eyes, but by the end of the book, he's already looking at things in a new way. And he learns from his mistakes, which puts him miles ahead of any fourteen-year-old boy I've ever known. He's lost his parents, is adjusting to his older brother suddenly being in charge of him, and feels out of place at school. He's smart, but sort of dumb, and he knows that he can be frustrating. Forgetfulness? Self-centeredness? Sudden bursts of temper? Hello, hormones! And plus, he's aware of his flaws -- that's why we are. If he weren't, they wouldn't be in the book. And can you imagine thinking, even for a little while, that your guardian hated you? Hated you? It's irrational, sure, but who's never felt like the whole world was against them at some point? |
