While serving in Afghanistan, he disobeyed a direct order in an attempt to save the lives of several servicemen. His reputation shattered by this act of insubordination, and he himself feeling betrayed by those in authority over him, he requested an assignment as far from the rest of the world as one can get and still be on the planet: Antarctica. It was here that he discovered that he had the ATA gene and the natural ability to use it. Tall, well-built with wild dark hair that defies any attempt to be controlled, he has a quick smile and almost always a relaxed posture (even in dangerous and tense situations). Despite his fairly relaxed command style, John is a soldier and the way dresses reflects this fact. Weapons: FN P90 M9/Beretta 92FS 9mm History: John Sheppard is a career pilot in the US Air Force. The son of a Cold War Colonel, he had always known that he wanted to fly and that he would do so in the Air Force. While serving in Afghanistan, he disobeyed a direct order in an attempt to save the lives of several servicemen. His insubordination tarnished his reputation as well as his trust in authority. He was serving out the remainder of his second tour at McMurdo, the US Antarctic base, when he encountered the Stargate project and inadvertently discovered his ability to use Ancient technology and his natural proficiency with it. Recruited as part of Dr Weir's Atlantis expedition, he eventually became the military leader of the expedition and leads the expedition's primary exploration team in both on and off world missions. Writing Sample: The strange sensation of stepping through the stargate was like nothing John had ever experienced. He recalled General O'Neill's comment that anyone who didn't want to step through the Stargate was nuts. Although he didn't understand or believe then, he had certainly had a change of heart. There was nothing better than this. Exploring a distant galaxy so far from his home planet, the distance was unthinkable, he reflected that he had come a long way from the disillusioned and disgruntled pilot at McMurdo. Arriving on M7Z-772, John looked around and knew that the rest of his team was right behind him. They were in a forest of some sort. The massive trees were clearly ancient, the smallest one looked to be about five meters in diameter. John paused at the DHD and raised the goggles and spotted the MALP standing placidly to one side. One of the camera's on the machine turned towards him and he tossed a half-hearted salute. He keyed his radio. "Don't worry," he said with a wry smile, "We know the drill-" CRACK! The sudden sound, coming from in the distance caused John to raise his weapon. He glanced at Ronon and nodded, "Check it out. And try to remember that we're peaceful explorers." "We'll be in touch," he said into the radio and then nodded to McKay and Teyla who followed him as he went after Ronon. Behind his he heard the all too familiar sound of the wormhole closing. |
