Kingdom Hearts II Genre: Action/RPG Developer/Publisher: Disney & Square-Enix Available on: PS2 Players: 1 Release Dates: JP - 22 December 2005 | US - 28 March 2006 | EU - 29 September 2006 Official Sites: Japan | North America | Europe Description: Here unlike the previous Kingdom Hearts installments you start as a young man called “Roxas” of Twilight Town. Roxas is on summer vacation with a number of his friends, but at times has these strange dreams and thoughts of Sora. Soon thereafter the game resumes with you once again as Sora, and having Donald & Goofy find you to set out on a new adventure. Although this time around you don’t just have Maleficent and her Heartless to deal with, but a new entity called the “Nobodies” lead by Organisation XIII are also new enemies of Sora – yet you’ll learn the Heartless & Nobodies don’t exactly get along either. Story Review: The story and Sora appears to have grown with it’s fans; this is something I’m really fond of. The story has added more complexity to it and at times appears to be more of a 3 way struggle then a simple 2 way battle just between the Keyblade and the Heartless. Now with the addition of even more existing worlds such as the Pride Lands & Port Royal, and return visits to previous favourites like Halloween Town, Hollow Bastion & Agrabah there is even more to enjoy for those whom are fans of any old and recent Disney classics. Having many new and old worlds to explore with the deeper and even somewhat darker story has managed to follow up with the great simple story of the first installment rather well. 8.5/10 Battle System: The same great battle system of the first installment of Kingdom Hearts has being retained; but with some welcome additions. Now you have a “Drive Gauge” which allows for various forms to aid you in battle; and new reaction commands are available to add even more interactivity to the battles. While the 2 allies and Summons is still maintained. You will still often find yourself randomly picking battles at times to gain more experience and items for your weapon synthesis; because you’ll find it’s both fun and rewarding to keep on battling! A great battle system has simply got better in my opinion. The only criticism I can think of is that perhaps the new reaction commands made it a little too easy at times, as if you simple keep pressing triangle when it’s about to happen it will generally active it. A timing system would have been a little more appropriate; but that as the only major flaw in my eyes is a big win. 9/10 Difficulty: Now, either the game has got a little easier; or it just feels that way because you are already used to the first game. Either way battles overall don’t seem to be as difficult as previously witnessed in the first Kingdom Hearts. Although more different challenge conditions have been added to the game to make up for it; such as some rather difficult morale & time battles. As always if the game is a little too easy then simply attempt proud mode and you’ll find yourself in for a real challenge. Even getting through the first hour or two on this difficulty is extremely challenging and fitting to hardcore gamers. Kingdom Hearts has clearly found a bit of a niche in getting the difficulty right for all gamers regardless of their experience. 9/10 Replay Value: Even more then last time, Synthesis has had an overhaul; the Gummi ship has have a massive overhaul and more. After you finish the game there is still likely to be countless challenges and mini games remaining for you to challenge yourself again. You’ll quite easily be playing this for countless hours after completing the game. 9/10 Final Thoughts: A great game in a unique series just got better, simple as that. If you loved the first it’s an absolute must to buy, if you haven’t played the first yet then what’s stopping you? You’d be clearly missing out of a one of a kind brilliant series, even if a little childish at times. Rating: 8.9/10 *This review is based on my personal opinions from my own experiences with the game. Comments on the review are most welcome. |
