Kingdom Hearts Genre: Action/RPG Developer/Publisher: Disney & Square-Enix Available on: PS2 Players: 1 Release Dates: JP - 28 March 2002 | US - 17 September 2002 | EU - 15 November 2002 Official Sites: Japan | North America | International Description: Kingdom Hearts provides a unique combination of Disney classics with various Final Fantasy Characters to create a third person action/RPG. For those that love either Disney or Final Fantasy will find this a rare and unique game that is almost impossible to replicate. You start out as a young man called Sora, whom is on a holiday island with him long time friends Riku & Kairi. They are preparing a raft to sail away and see other worlds, before too long the island they are on is overtaken by darkness and unknown enemies called “Heartless” whom appear before them. To help Sora defeat the heartless he receives a fated weapon called the “Keyblade”. With this he is able to defeat the heartless, but despite his efforts he is dragged into another world separated from his childhood friends. Here Sora tries to learn ways to be re-united with them, to be soon accompanied by Donald & Goofy on an adventure to various Disney worlds to learn more about the Keyblade, Heartless and his missing friends. Story Review: As expected by a Square-Enix/Disney combination game the story is lighthearted, with come comedic and serious moments added to the mix. The story while somewhat complex is presented is a simple manner that is not too difficult to understand. Those of us which have watched many Disney movies in the past will really appreciate the re-make of the beautiful stories in a new perspective as Sora and his friends get to take play in a revival of many Disney classics. Unless you’re after a real hardcore RPG story you won’t be disappointed in this simple, yet extremely well presented story. 8/10 Battle System: The Battle System involves third person action in the existing environments you are already in. As soon as enemies appear you are simply equipped with your weapon to battle where you are at the time. At all times you are to control Sora, and often have Donald & Goofy at your side to help out – and occasionally other Disney hero’s like Beast & Aladdin. The fighting is pretty much hack and slash your enemies to victory, relying on your timing and character level and equipment. While it’s rather simple it’s surprisingly addictive and you’ll rarely complain about having to train more – as it’s just simply fun. 9/10 Difficulty: Overall the game isn’t too difficult, the challenges usually take no more then 3 attempts to overcome – as do the major battles. Simple training and tinkering with your equipment & abilities will be enough to overcome all obstacles… eventually. Although thankfully it offers a harder game setting for those that find it a little too easy – which makes it well suited to both beginners and self proclaimed RPG experts. 8/10 Replay Value: While there is no real new game plus etc it’s still really enjoyable to play a few times. Add the additional difficulty and work on your completions of the 108 Dalmatians, Coliseum challenges etc will keep you interested for quiet some time. 7.5/10 Final Thoughts: Overall it’s a great unique game combining action, RPG, Final Fantasy & Disney all in one. A must have for any Final Fantasy &/or Disney fan. Rating: 8.3/10 |
