Sophia Esteed![]() Japanese Version Name: Sophia Esteed Race: Earthling Height: 5'3" Weight: 108 lbs Age: 17 Weapon: Staff & Symbology Starting Level: 1 Background: Sophia is Fayts childhood friend, she is a student of the Spacetime Department of Bachtein High School. She is also highly skilled in household tasks such as cleaning & sewing. She too like Fayt starts off on a lovely holiday, and parents for both of them. The holiday gets rudely cut short leaving Sophia split from Fayt and other family members. Personality: She is a soft hearted caring young lady that loves cats, and will always try lend an ear to those in need. She also tends to lack confidence in her physical traits and ability to be of aid in battle. Recruitment Info: While you see her very early in the game, it will be some time later until she become playable again. Although she will join eventually fairly early on disk 2, so don't fret about being able to miss her. Battle Information: Sophia can learn some Battle Skills and mainly Symbology; refer to the list below for what unique symbology she will learn, when and an evaluation of them. Name: Crush MP Cost: 25 CP Cost: NA Learned: Lv 29 Function: Drops a huge object to crush enemies. Evaluation: A pretty pointless symbol that causes a large object to fall upon an enemy from afar. Ok damage, but not a great diameter of damage, although seeing some famous Star Ocean bunnies jump around it is somewhat fascinating. Rating: 2.5/10 Name: Blood Scylla MP Cost: 300 CP Cost: 7 Learned: Item Requirement: Abstruse Scroll, level 1 of the Maze of Tribulations Function: Summons a lord of the daemonium to obliterate enemies. Evaluation: This summon covers about the full short range, and can drain some HP & MP to be transferred to Sophia, total amount isn’t that great however. Rating: 3.5/10 Name: Gremlins MP Cost: 50 CP Cost: 6 Learned: Item Requirement: Recondite Scroll, level 209 of Sphere 211. Function: Summon hungry gremlins of the daemonium to attack the enemy. Evaluation: A bunch of little gremlins run and chase your enemy for a limited time, causing decent enough damage. Rating: 6/10 Name: Meteor Swarm MP Cost: 200 CP Cost: 10 Learned: Item Requirement: Profound Scroll, level 210 of Sphere 211. Function: Summons a meteor shower from space to pulverize the enemy. Evaluation: Highest CP cost item in the game, and strangely while it appears as a Symbol it cannot actually be cast as one, and can only be used as a major Battle Skill. It takes a quite a while to cast, but once invoked can cause deadly results. If you’re willing to put up with its ridiculous cost and restrictions it can be rather damaging. Rating: 7/10 Name: Southern Cross MP Cost: 120 CP Cost: 6 Learned: Item Requirement: Puzzling Scroll, level 106 of Sphere 211. Function: Generates a sacred cross to purge evil. Evaluation: Not up to the standard of the Second Story version in terms of coverage, but still covers a sizable diameter around the user. Then being able to cancel chain it is great and all, but not really for Sophia. Leave it to Adray, for Sophia it’s not really worth the trouble Rating: 6.5/10 Learning Chart This chart covers every skill Sophia can learn by level order; bar the ones every character can learn via items.
![]() Battle Overview: Sophia is the ultimate Symbology user, she is far Superior to even Adray thanks to the highest INT rating in the game. She is also equal with Adray in learning more abilities then any other character in the game. You can use her at your Healing and Offensive Symbologist at the game time, extremely versatile and can also provide outstanding Stun-locking support via Thunder Flare. A must to have developed fairly well and ready to use if needed. On the flipside as you would expect from a specialise Symbologist she is poor at delivering Physical attacks (with the exception of Long Major, that’s a good range MP attack), and doesn’t have much DEF to handle being hit either. You really have to ensure she is kept well away from the battles. Considering her vast array of skills you may want to disable some from her AI use, or simply use her yourself to ensure she does exactly what’s needed in the situation. Suggested Skill Sets Thunder Clamp Sm: (Empty) Lm: Thunder Flare SM: (Empty) LM: Thunder Flare S1: Quick Symbol S2: Increase MP With this you can use what is arguable the best stun-locking technique in the game. Sophia can stand afar from the enemy as you wish and simply chain Thunder Flare time and time again, fantastic clamping style attack that severely cripple enemies movement. It also leaves enough SP to equip the very useful Quick Symbol, which allows all of her symbols to be cast faster. Finally is the addition of Increase MP, 40% more MP is very handy when it doesn’t interfere with your other skills, First Aid for once is gone as you don’t want to have your Symbologists hit; therefore it will be less effective for them. Meteor Storm Sm: (Empty) Lm: (Empty) SM: (Empty) LM: Meteor Swarm S1: Quick Symbol S2: First Aid This is in fact the only way you can use Meteor Swarm, it’s the only ‘Symbol’ that Sophia cannot cast via the Symbology menu (which makes me doubt the fact it’s even labelled a Symbol, perhaps an error?) Anyway, while it’s slow to cast you can invoke it from afar, and once summoned can cause excellent damage. You can still keep your Quick Symbol with it as well, which is extremely useful (and pretty much a must) to cast faster. The remainder leaves 2 CP remaining, I used 1 of them for First Aid, not really needed, you can use the final 2 CP as you see fit. Note that the battle skill evaluations are based on my own thoughts and experiences with the game, I'm sure not everyone will agree with my ratings; feel free to post your own assessments of these abilities or any other comments relating to Sophia. |

Sophia is definitely the best Symbologist in the game. her INT is pretty high, and if you manage to max it out, her symbols will do incredible amounts of damage. For example, for me, Meteor Swarm was dealing over 20,000 damage every time it hit once Sophia's INT went up to the 9,000s. Also, it's really fun to stunlock with her Thunder Flare, as the above setup insists. Although, I would suggest that you synthesize a Wind Damage +30% factor onto one of her weapons, so that Thunder Flare becomes stronger. With this, Sophia can just go to the corner of the map and shock the enemies to oblivion, leaving them really little time to move anywhere. Plus, it's fun because you experience how annoying it is in the game. What's more is there to say? Sophia should be your first choice if you're going to use symbols. She specializes in both healing and offensive Symbology. But it might be a pain to level her up from level 1, though. But I guess that's how you get those leveling up Battle Trophies. |
