Star Ocean: Till the End of Time - Missable Guide

This guide will detail everything that you can potentially miss during the game, whether it is useful or not, anything you might miss will be detailed here. The Guide is light on spoiler content, trying to avoid giving too much information away about the story, while providing sufficient details on all of the following missable treasures locked away in the game.

In order of appearance (or rather potential loss) are the following things that can be lost, one of them are the playable character Roger. At least make sure you satisfy this one if you want to be able to choose between all the playable characters later in the game. Simply search for the names listed in the contents if you wish to check one part in particular.

This is all original stuff, with constant personal note taking while playing through the game - Yeah it's by far one of my favourite games/series ever!

2) Setup your Battle Trophy File

You must setup your Battle Trophy effectively two times in order to collect the challenging and rewarding Trophies.

Firstly, after making the initial selections, difficulty, screen setting etc you will reach a Battle Trophy Screen. Create a Battle Trophy file if it’s your first play, and on replayed load up the Battle Trophy file. This is the first important stage in setting them up for collection. If you have multiple game files on the one memory card it will not matter which you load it off, providing it had a Battle Trophy file attached to it.

Secondly, once you reach the battle simulator one of the options will be “Battle Trophies” be certain to click on it, and then load up your Battle Trophy data a second time. This will ensure you can collect them during the game.

3) Shake

During roaming around Hyda IV on your vacation, click on the blue cylinder looking terminal toward the center of the Lounge, do so and a little discussion with Fayt & Sophia will take place and you will get the one and only “Shake” in the game. It’s classed as food and will restore 90% HP at any one given time, pretty pointless but the only one you can get! Do it before you enter the combat simulator too.

4) Medecentra Pyroxene

When you’re finished with dealing with Norton you will return to Whipple Village. Cliff will want you to ‘hurry up’. But before you leave the down revisit the Mayors’ house and talk to him, he will give you this item in appreciation for helping out the town. It can help cut down HP usage for battle skills (-20% Battle Skill HP use & -30% Battle Skill HP use). You’ll find it to be very handy accessory early in the game. Particularly considering the limited accessories you will have available early on.

5) Roger S. Huxley - Character

It’s actually possible to miss a playable character. Reasonably early into the game you will have to go to a place called “Duggas Forest”. Early in the forest you’ll encounter many lifelike trees and rockslides. Once you’re about halfway in you’ll come at a crossroads that allows you to go either North or West. Go west and you will then have a hut to inspect. Shortly after you’ll encounter a fairly easy fight with some thieves, then have the option to take Roger with you. Do so and you have opened the door for one of the optional playable characters in the game.

6) Ruddle & Rumina

Ruddle & Rumina are two inexperienced travellers you will be able to visit in the Luxury Inn west of Peterny after you have completed the save Ameena quest. They will remain here until the Elicoor II War a little later in the game. This side-quest must be completed by then otherwise they will be gone forever. They will talk for a while basically arguing with other then eventually ask you to give them directions. Once the listed condition is done they will not have listened to you, but it’s supposed to happen. Visit the next nominated area to find them to yet again give them the correct directions.

Refer below for a list of what replies to give them.
1) In the Luxury Inn of West Peterny, reply “its south, didn’t you know that?”.
2) In the “Dozing” Inn of Arias, reply “Go through the northwest gate” or "Easiest way is through the southwest gate" - Either works in this scenario.
3) In the “Wyvern’s Tail” Inn of Airyglyph, reply “You already passed Kirlsa”.

Once you've done the 3 above scenarios in the order shown above you will find these two in the Kirlsa tavern - they will remain here until the end of the Elicoor II War.

Now as your reward they will be able to sell you their goods. One of them are “Blueprints” off Rumina, which Fayt thinks may be a rip-off, believe me they aren’t. Pay the 5,000 Fol; this will be a key miss-able part in getting the best Engineering inventor in the game, Izak. Ruddle will sell various goods, the best of them being the Regeneration Symbol (3% MP Regeneration at intervals), I highly recommend buying up to 8 of them, so every character can have one, also & 'Symbol of Courage' (+1 Battle Bonus Gauge) is a handy item to equip a few melee users with early in the game.

Also by doing this mini quest it will also allow them to appear in a house North-West of Aquaria. This will occur after you have returned to Elicoor 2 late in the game via the Diplo, where they will sell many of the best equipment Fol can buy.

7) Retail Rabbit Youth

The Retail Rabbit Youth is a bunny salesman that you will find walking around the West of Peterny. Immediately after the Elicoor II war you will be able to buy a Blaze Gun for Maria, handy but not spectacular. This will be the last time you want to talk to him until you return to Elicoor II late in the game via the Diplo on disk 2. At this point he can sell you the best equipment Fol can buy just like Ruddle & Rumina. However this will not be possible if he goes home during the course of the game.

If you wish to talk to him at any other time during the game be sure to save your game first. He will say something like “You’re my last customer before I go home, anything you buy will be less weight for me to carry”; then leaves after the sale reload your most recently save file, you don’t want this little guy to leave. Late on disk two (After returning from Styx) he will say something like “I’m unable to go home, so may as well sell while I’m here”.

Should you keep him in town he will sell the highest quality weapons Fol can buy, which occurs only once you’ve returned to Elicoor II via the anti federation ship, the Diplo. So buy up big if you have spare Fol, they are superior to Laser Weapons & Ablative Shields for most characters. May just be the difference you need to obtain later game Battle Trophies and finish the game.

8) Ancient Books

The Ancient Books are a series of 7 ‘clues to treasure’; it’s a side-quest you can activate with Roger, of course this means you must have saved him at Duggas Forest and allowed him to tag along with your group.

After the Duggas Forest scenes are completed you will be able to re-visit Roger in his home of Surferio, doing so you will find Roger and his friends gazing over some books they found. Let Roger join to help him find the ‘treasure’. You must start this before engaging with the largest dragon of them all, Crosell. Also, you will not be able find any of the books rewards after defeating Crosell either, so I’d recommend getting to Surferio pretty quickly after the Duggas Forest scenes to best your chances to get all 7 rewards.

Refer to the list below of the locations of the item, and the subsequent reward for finding the location.

1) Rock in Duggus forest left of where Mudman was - +15% HP Berries.
2) Kirlsa Caverns, Torch just left of the Hauler control panel - +4 INT Berries.
3) Sealed Cavern, Retail Rabbit Room - +4 INT Berries.
4) Ancient Ruins of Mosel, stone statue at North of runic chess room - +4 STR Berries.
5) Mountains of Barr, skeleton in area with many little dragons - Elven Slippers.
6) Abandoned outdoor part of Baquerel Mine, tree in Northwest area - Demonbane Cross.
7) Urssa Lava cave, inspect the left torch on bunny statue which had the Rabbit Ears Key behind it - Rabbit Ears Chalice.

The 1st four are once of permanent stat boosting berries, handy for a boost when chasing tough Battle Trophies.

The 5th, Elven Slippers offer -1 Fury use and +5% movement rate, handy and can be refined to be even more beneficial.

The Demonbane Cross will negate 50% of special attacks by enemies of the Demon family, if used at the right time can be helpful, but I wouldn’t bother with it.

Finally is the Rabbit Ears Chalice, it will offer a boost of 2 to each of the 5 standard attributes, as well as offer a unique ability as follows.

Once it’s equipped if you enter this combination “Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, O, X or X, O”. Doing so will cause an explosion of half your max HP, which will be a loss of yours which damages the enemy. Although it’s just a pain in the backside really, don’t waste your time with it.

9) Letter from King of Airyglyph

After you have recruited Albel you can visit the King of Airyglyph in his room, when doing so he will ask you to do him a favour. This will involve delivering a letter to a member of the Aquaria Castle; you will not be able to do this after you have defeated Crosell. It does not have to be done, and affects nothing but affections; as it’s strictly a Private Action matter. Nevertheless, it’s another small item that can be missed.

10) Blades of Ryusen

The Blades of Ryusen is a great early game weapon for Nel that adds a Freezing Element when attacking; it is available after you have recruited Albel. Once Albel is in the party to go the 2nd floor of Woltars mansion in Kirlsa and visit Woltar, here Nel will have a discussion with him leading to her receiving the “Blades of Ryusen” this must be completed before defeating Crosell or it will be missing forever. Weapons later in the game will exceed it for power, but it’s a once off chance for a great weapon up until defeating Crosell.

11) Gutsy Bunny

The Gutsy Bunny is an item that you can get off Vanilla (the inventor who makes the Ring of Disintegration). When he asks how much Fol you’re willing to pay for his services pay either 10,000 or 30,000 Fol. By paying either of the higher amounts he will give you the Gutsy Bunny as a bonus. If you pay the lowest amount, 1,000 Fol you will not get this item. Although regardless of what you pay you will get the Ring of Disintegration made, but I'd still recommend paying the 10,000 Fol to get the extra rare item.

The Gutsy Bunny is an item you can equip to make battles much harder then usual, but to offer additional experience. Personally I find it easier to work with a Triple Exp gauge, but it's a handy option to have.

12) Crimson Scourge

The Crimson Scourge is a powerful weapon that only Albel can use, it also comes with a “+1 Attack Decision” factor, which allows 1.5 damage every standard hit. This will be available if you have Albel in your party after you return from the Diplo late on disk 2. If you satisfy both of the above conditions then go upstairs of Airyglyth castle and visit the king, a discussion between him and Albel will take place. Leading to an interesting solo scene with Albel where he will ultimately received the sword after it.
13) Final Party Characters

The following details four of the characters you can potentially miss during the game, Albel, Nel, Peppita and Roger. One of the three (except Peppita) will join at the Kirlsa Training Facility early on Disk two, however the other three will depend on your actions as to whether they will form your final party. Check below for details of the four in question.

Note: Only a maximum of two of these characters will be able to form your final party. Fayt, Sophia, Cliff, Maria, Mirage & Adray will join no matter what you do in the game.

a) Albel Nox

Albel will first join you about half way through disk 1 as your progress with the story, but will later leave at the end of disk 1. If you wish to recruit Albel and have him save you at the Kirlsa Training Facility, you must do the following. After recruiting Albel from Airyglyph's Woltar, and before defeating the Dragon Crosell, run to the "The Front Door" Inn in Peterny. After staying there, you'll be woken up in the night by Albel, when you talk to him outside he asks, "Do you hate me?". If your response is, "Not really" he will be the one to save you at "Kirlsa Training Facility" and remain in your final party.

If you want Albel in your team and he didn't save you at "Kirlsa Training Facility" make sure you don't recruit Peppita at Moonbase. Then later when you get access to Elicoor II again, speak to Woltar in his office. Then travel to Urssa Lava caves where you fought Crosell to meet Albel. Beat him in one on one combat and you get him to join you.

B) Nel Zelpher

Nel will join your group very early in the game, but will leave at the end of the disk 1 event. Later Nel may also be the one who rescues you at the Kirlsa Training Facility, in fact is most likely too if you don't do many private actions during the game. However, if Nel did not come to your aide at the Kirlsa Training Facility she is still recruitable if you do the following. Providing you haven't recruited Peppita and you have room for one more character. If Nel's your girl then head to Aquaria Castle, visit her in her room. When you visit her tell her "You don't have time to chat", if you reply "I just wanted to see you" you will NOT be able to recruit her.

c) Roger S. Huxley

If you both recruited him at Duggas Forest and done allowed him to tag along for the Ancient Book Quest he too will have a chance of saving you at Kirlsa, providing you talk down Nel & Albel at any chance. If he does not come to the rescue, you haven't recruited Peppita and still have a spot remaining he will be at the Mayor's house in Surferio, just let him come along again and he shall return.

d) Peppita Rossetti

Peppita will be part of your group for a very short time during the escape of Hyda IV at the beginning of the game, although will not appear again until disk 2. She is easy to miss, and just as easy to recruit. Early on disk 2 she will temporarily rejoin the group while you're at Moonbase. At the end of this part of the story she will want to join you. Simply allowing it will have her join, not allowing it will open the door for the remainder of the above 3, which did not save you at the Kirlsa Training Facility.

14) End, Final Notes

That concludes my personal FAQ from countless plays (about 5-6 I guess) and constant note taking, Hope you find something useful.

Finally thanks to tri-Ace for yet another great instalment of the Star Ocean series. Also thanks to Square-Enix for distributing it generously to the at times forgotten lands of PAL fans.

If you wish to discuss this FAQ, or post any relevant replies to it feel free.

Thanks for tips 10 and 13b. I got Nel in the party on one of my save files, but I forgot how I did it.

Yeah, 13 is really important to help determine who your final party will be.

Personally, I normally go for Nel & Peppita, and the easiest way to do that I found was to avoid the extra scene at Peterny with Albel and always saying nice things about Nel when you get the chance. Then she will be at Kirlsa and let annoying Peppita come along at Moonbase. :)
