This is my review for the Puzzle RPG Devil Regime, produced by Crowleyism.. She has requested that I do not offer a download, screenshots, or media of any kind for her games. I will respect that.. On with my review. Plot---(5/5) History will always repeat itself. That is the premise of the complex plotline about a legion of demons from The Underworld who emerge to take on human form in plans to once again plunge the Earth into a chaotic darkness. Shirosa and Alk, two best friends who attend the same school together, unlock the gateway for the evil to be unleashed, believing that they could harness the power for their own benefit. As the darkness spirals out of control, Shirosa and Alk both learn that things are not always as they appear. A tragic tale of suicide, lies, and heartbreaking romance ensues. But only one of them will survive the newly birthed Devil Regime. The story to this game and how it unfurls over the fourteen solid hours of story mode is mind boggling and wonderful. You will begin to question the very history the game's plot lays out itself and piece together the evidence that will lead to your untimely fate or glorious victory. Devil Regime poses a thought provoking cast of characters and an even more glamorous labyrinth of twists and turns, leaving you begging for more. Gameplay---(4/5) The gameplay of Devil Regime packs lots of punch, but will likely only appeal to a small margin of RP Gamers in that its very core is made up of puzzles, mazes, riddles, and mini-games with a dash of action for the battle scenes. If you are up for scouring dungeons and leveling up while solving the mysteries in multiple tiered buildings, this is a game for you. Each puzzle and riddle is directly linked to the game's plot so the player must pay close attention to the storyline and dialogue scenes in order to successfully overcome the obstacles the darkness throws in their way. Like many RPGs, Devil Regime allows the player to visit town in order to talk to the locals, buy and upgrade weapons, rest at the inn, and other basic RPG elements. The game has only one town and each dungeon is accessed through a main 'gate' within the town in order to advance the storyline. This can become a very tedious aspect of dungeon to town and back to dungeon cycle, and the locals in town barely change their dialogue each run through. Some dungeons must be conquered three to four times before the story will progress. For those who love 'dungeon crawling' this could be pleasing, but may become a bore to those who like a change of pace. Plenty of mini games and odds and ends can be found around the town. This takes away from the monotony of the otherwise stationary town. The learning curve of this game can be a bit difficult as the player must manage notes, spells, items, and crystals in effective ways in battle and in exploring their surroundings. The level of the enemies jump drastically at points in the game. Leveling up is crucial. Battles are typically fun as the player can mix and match their items to create their own effects with elements and properties. Each character you can recruit has different abilities to help the party on their quest and each has a special skill that can help access areas of dungeons and the town that are otherwise unreachable. This game has no extra features to my knowledge. Visuals---(4.5/5) The character animations and style are absolutely fantastic. The artwork is very mature and professional looking and the band color tones bring out the Gothic theme the game aims for. The character sprites are heavily detailed and move without flaw. My only gripe is that the scenery for the dungeons and the town could have flowed better overall with the character portraits and sprites. The backgrounds and the objects on top seem as if they are to come from two entirely different games, as the environments contained more saturation and vibrancy to that of the characters. This makes the graphics look inconsistent. But this is a minor setback to the sheer beauty and work put into the visual presentation of Devil Regime. Your eyes will be very pleased. Sound---(5/5) This is one of my favorite features of Devil Regime. Consisting of dark Gothic ambiance and rock tracks to psychedelic trance samples, the soundtrack to this game is high in flavor and rich in emotion. The music is so precisely picked for each scene that the story jumps to life. A heart pumping Gothic metal track for those 'on the edge of your seat' boss fights. A melodic organ playing softly to old memories of death and destruction. It is absolutely a beautiful experience. The sound effects, though there are few, are crisp and clear. Overall, this is a game you want to turn up really loud should you get a chance to play. Overall---(4.5/5) For such a ingeniously crafted game, I do not understand why Crowleyism would not want to release this for public playing. It is a game I believe everyone should experience if they enjoy a real challenge and a dark, twisted tale that will have you questioning your own views of life at the end. Stunning graphics, fun gameplay, and a soundtrack that will make your ears tingle in awe. I believe Devil Regime is a real success. |
