Easy wins have never been my style

I've referred to this series a bit lately, so we may as well have a topic exclusively for the massive series. There are several Dragon Quest (or Dragon Warrior) games out there, as well as spinoffs such as Dragon Quest Monsters. Lately the western world is seeing more of their games as well. For many years now it has been one of Japan's most successful RPG series after all, in fact I believe Japan rate it right up there with the infamous Final Fantasy series. They may look a little light and childish, like slimes of all creatures been one of it's icons, but don't let it's light look fool you. To me, the Dragon Quest titles of the past, and even today are more representitive of an old school RPG style. They tend to require a whole lot of grinding, offer a fairly simple battle system and story - but deliver them extremely well. It's probably the best basic style of RPG series out there. Unless your completely anti-religion I guess, as saving the game (and even finding out what exp you need for your next level up) must be done via a church. No save points in dungeons either (but you can learn spells to immediately evacuate a dungeon, as well as to return to any previously visited town in an instant) I've only played two titles at the moment, VIII - Journey of the Cursed King (with the hilarious Yangus). And IV - Chapters of the Chosen, which seperates the game with different stories and viewpoints rather well. I'm certainly going to purchase the more recent remake V - Hand of the heavenly bride now as well after been impressed with IV on DS. Discuss anything about the series here! |

Yeah, your right there. Enix with Dragon Quest used to be Square's only serious rival in Japan. I've only played VIII but I enjoyed the game and even the cartoon look as well as the Jail/Candy Cats

I'm surprised I've really got back into the games, but I love it at the moment. I just killed TWO Metal King Slimes in a row; IN A ROW!!11!111one. Heh, anyway it's just very rare to do that - and the experience you get for it is just bloody awesome. I don't even know/have a skill which can give me a potential one hit kill chance (like Parallax in VIII). But I do have the wonderful Liquid Metal Sword.

I guess this ain't that popular around here? :/ Anyway, I'm happy. I just found out that Square Enix are now doing a remake of the sixth title, Dragon Quest VI for DS next year. ![]() http://www.square-enix.co.jp/dragonquest/4to6/ After going through and finishing both the other remakes, IV & V and enjoying them this will certainly be another future purchase for me. Just need to wait until we know about the English release now... |
