Easy wins have never been my style

I've just been thinking about the first RPG's I've played, and those two RPG's are still the types I adore now. I get the felling that those you play first will heavily influence what you like in RPGs there after. The first ones I played (can't remember which was first, so I'll list both) Phantasy Star IV: Stunning RPG, and I still believe it's one of the best I've played, futuristic in parts, excellent and simple battle system, great music and comic strips to detail the game, vehicles you can fight in and more. I loved it, such a shame it was the last of the original Phantasy Star series. ![]() Shining Force II: Excellent tactical style RPG of the Fire Emblem ilk, no surprise I love Fire Emblem titles still today as Shining Force is no more. What did you play first? Do you think that has influenced what you still like in RPGs today? |

My first RPG was Breath of Fire III, which was the game that got me into RPGs in the first place. It was a good story, good music, good gameplay. Then I played Suikoden II and I absolutely loved it. The fun of recruiting all these characters and having all these party combinations, the war game was great as well, not to mention a fantastic story. The music was also good (as you can tell, I'm big on music in games :P). I definitely think that this has influenced my current taste in games. Real-time is great but I still enjoy a good turn-based battle system. |
Woo, Suikoden!

That's a hard one, I've started playing games since I was a little kid, I wasn't even sure some of the games I played were considered RPG during that age (probably missed a few on Sega). The most clear piece of memory which I have right now is Final Fantasy VIII on the PS1. That game really blew me away at first with all the amazing graphical cutscenes in the beginning and during the gameplay. That game definitely impacted me on how I approach the RPG genre of games today. It totally got me sucked into Final Fantasy series which then gave me a starting position to take on this massive RPG world. But then there were good and bad experiences also, for instance, Valkyrie Profile 2 for the PS2, now that is what I call a HARD game.

I only played Grandia II of the series, I thought it was pretty good too. Not the best I've played, but still enjoyable. Two of you so far have been corrupted by playing Final Fantasy first!

My first RPG, actually my first PS2 game as well, was Kingdom Hearts. I didn't complete it until a year later because I got stuck at one part. When I came back and finished it, I felt it was an awesome game. Since then, it's led me to the Final Fantasy series, and the Star Ocean series. You can thank that game for that! |

My first RPG was one of the Final Fatnasy games, I believe. I think it was IV or V or VI. I played it, and I didn't like it at first. But after a while, I loved the game! It got me to play more Final Fantasy games, which ultimately led to me trying out other games by the same company: Square Enix. That was when I played Radiata Stories, followed by Star Ocean, and then Valkyrie Profile. And that was when my love for tri-Ace blossomed!^^ |

I found FFX when Squeenix was still Square Soft, and in my opinion, when it was better. |

My copy of FFX was when it was still Square Soft, too. However, I like the logo of Square Enix better, but Square Soft, I find, makes better games than Enix. |

I had two copies of Kingdom Hearts, one broke. One was from SS, and the other, SE. The SS's manual was in color, and the SE's one wasn't. I didn't like that. So, when I got rid of the SS one, I switched the manuals. |

On all my RPGs that are ordered online, I have to fix them. If they're used, I take out the cover and the manual, and switch it with the case of another game of the same console, one that nobody plays. |

But I have to take good care of my games. I don't want them in a corner collecting dust. My first RPGs are still pretty clean! |

Earliest game I remember playing would have to be The Legend of Dragoon. My brother bought it when I was younger and got me to play it. Ever since then, I've been hooked to RPGs. |
