Nel Zelpher Japanese Version Name: Nel Zelpher Race: Elicoorian Height: 5'7" Weight: 112 lbs Age: 23 Weapon: Daggers & Runology Starting Level: 3 Background: Nel is an enigmatic servant of the covert operations for Aquios. Her father is the well known Nevelle Zelpher, whom was also a great servant for the Kingdom of Aquios. Personality: She takes her job very seriously, and rarely cuts any corners in getting her job done. She comes across as a very ruthless and cold hearted character (well the anime says otherwise, but this is about the game ok?). Despite her hard working & aloof appearance, she still cares deeply for those that serve her. She just has difficulty in expressing it and believes that emotion cannot interfere with her work. Recruitment Info: She is also one of the four characters you don’t need to have in your final party, and may be one of three that will perform a rescue action later in the game. Even if she does not she will still be recruitable if you firstly deny Peppita the opportunity to join early on disk 2. Then later visit her at her castle and tell her “You don’t have time to chat”, of course you cannot have optionally recruited any others after denying Peppita for this to be available. Battle Information: Nel can learn both Battle Skills and Symbology; refer to the list below for what unique battle skills she will learn, when and an evaluation of them. Note: Base cost is the skill cost if used as a minor skill; it varies by both the level of the attack and the characters maximum HP for Major Attacks. The Base Cost purpose is for a guide to fury consumption use and whether it consumes HP or MP to perform. Battle Skills Summary: Name: Shock Wave CP Cost: 3 Learned: Starts with it Range: Short Base Cost: 12 HP/20 Fury Function: Emits a long and narrow shockwave in the direction faced. Hold the attack button down to initiate. Evaluation: Causes a small forward burst attack, can also be cancel chained. But will be quickly replaced by better skills she will learn before too long. Rating: 2/10 Name: Shadow Wave CP Cost: 3 Learned: Lv 10 Range: Short Base Cost: 12 HP/20 Fury Function: Emits a extremely low-flying shockwave. Hold the attack button down to initiate. Evaluation: Excellent simple defensive attack, two quick short range attacks that adds a little MP damage and will often knock your opponent down. Very safe and great to escape from a tight situation with, just a little more range would have being nice. Rating: 7/10 Name: Ice Daggers CP Cost: 4 Learned: Lv 15 Range: Short/Medium Base Cost: 30 HP/40 Fury Function: Simultaneously throws three ice kunais. Hold the attack button down to initiate. Evaluation: By and large the best freezing attack in the game, deals three fast and powerful Icicles toward the enemy that can potentially freeze them. Should it succeed you will get an opportunity to instantly kill them with a subsequent attack. Can turn even the most powerful of regular monsters turn into nothing! Of course its slight weakness is it won’t work on Ice monsters, and can backfire if you rely on the freezing chance too heavily. Rating: 9/10 Name: Poison Cloud CP Cost: 2 Learned: Lv 20 Range: Short Base Cost: 12 HP/10 Fury Function: Emits a poisonous smokescreen in the direction faced. Hold the attack button down to initiate. Evaluation: This slow, but handy Poison attack can cause a little MP damage on top of HP damage and can be cancel chained. Should Poison work it can slowly kill most standard enemies, as very few can undo its affect. Of course it pretty much never works on the most powerful of enemies though. Rating: 4.5/10 Name: Whirlwind CP Cost: 3 Learned: Lv 25 Range: Short Base Cost: 80 HP/30 Fury Function: Generates tornadoes around herself or a limited time. Hold the attack button down to initiate. Evaluation: Probably the highest HP attack any character can use. Causes a high number of attacks when can link additional attacks such as Stun is used well. Only obvious weakness is its Wind element, even then it’s still an outstanding attack. Rating: 9/10 Name: Flying Guillotine CP Cost: 5 Learned: Lv 30 Range: Short Base Cost: 60 HP/30 Fury Function: Throws sword like a boomerang. Hold the attack button down to initiate. Evaluation: Throws a large diameter sword like a boomerang, causes both high HP & MP damage with multiple hits, on the end of a cancel chain can be a very devastating attack, one of her most powerful by far. Rating: 9/10 Name: Lightning Chain CP Cost: 4 Learned: Lv 40 Range: Short Base Cost: 40 HP/30 Fury Function: Emits a blinding beam of light from the tip of the sword held out in an attack posture. Hold the attack button down to initiate Evaluation: A Lightning attack that moves randomly attacking various targets for a short period of time, excellent accuracy but not much more then average HP damage. Rating: 5/10 Name: Mirror Slice CP Cost: 8 Learned: Lv 52 Range: Short Base Cost: 100 HP/60 Fury Function: A series of moves with a short sword. Hold the attack button down to initiate. Evaluation: Even Nel can pull off an insane combo attack, this can hold your opponent and cause a series of attacks, tearing off HP damage and will knock your opponent down at the end of it. While it’s of high cost it’s not too restrictive since you can still add some useful attacks with it like Ice Daggers along side it. If the hard to get hit high combo style suits then definitely use it. Rating: 7.5/10 Name: Divine Wrath CP Cost: 7 Learned: Item Requirement: Obscure Scroll, level 5 of the Maze of Tribulations. Range: Short Base Cost: 250 HP/25 Fury Function: Slaughters the enemy with demonic speed. Hold the attack button down to initiate. Evaluation: Similar to Mirror Slice, in fact overall a little better. Finishes with a nice high range attack and costs 1 less CP. Rating: 8.5/10 Name: Splitting Sky CP Cost: 6 Learned: Item Requirement: Voluminous Folio, level 169 of Sphere 211 Range: Short Base Cost: 160 HP/30 Fury Function: Emits a flash of lightning. Hold the attack button down to initiate. Evaluation: Potentially a very damaging attack of the “Energy Burst” ilk, although is much slower to apply and does not provide as great a diameter of an attack. Hard to manage but very powerful if you can get control of it. Rating: 7/10 Learning Chart This chart covers every skill Nel can learn by level order; bar the ones every character can learn via items.
 Battle Overview: Nel offers a swift moving all round style fighter that can provide a combination of various battle skills from high hit attacks, to high power attacks to the ability to freeze the enemy. Including some standard to advanced symbology, from basic Healing to Lightning Strike. Perhaps the best overall balanced character in the game. She also has the most powerful and attacking ‘very close minor attack’ where she jumps in the air spinning her knife causing about 4 hits which can also knock the enemy down. Pairing this attack with Stun, Critical Hit etc can amplify its use and growth. Her Major attacks see her jumping in the air and homing in on the enemies which provided outstanding accuracy and ease to perform. The downside of Nel is her remaining minor attacks, they are probably the slowest of the offensive fighters, I guess this is part of the Symbologist syndrome. You will also notice she has quite a few elemental attacks, so you will likely need to adjust her skill sets more then others. Then of course typical AI may waste time with Symbols which can truly be annoying if not used at the right time; you might want to disable all her offensive symbology from the AI use. Suggested Skill Sets Spinning Death Sm: Stun OR Increase HP/MP Lm: Stun SM: Whirlwind LM: Stun S1: Max Fury S2: Critical Hit HP While this is low on CP use its effectiveness cannot be underestimated, just be sure to avoid flyers etc that can absorb Wind. Using Whirlwind surrounds Nel in a high HP power/high hit attack which still allows her to move freely. Once invoked immediately attack your enemy, preferably as close to your enemy as possible, once activated the bonus of the attack (best with minor attack) with be transferred into the Whirlwind, causing a deadly spin on your enemy. Max Fury can help recover quicker to continually apply this attack, while Critical Hit HP can amplify your HP damage effectively thanks to the high amount of hits it will cause. Cold Hearted Nel Sm: Ice Daggers Lm: (Empty) SM: Shadow Wave LM: Ice Daggers S1: Critical Hit HP S2: First Aid With this combination you can perform the very safe, yet effective Shadow Wave when in a bind close to the enemy. But more importantly allows the extremely effective Ice Daggers to be used safely and at range via LM. Also attaching it to Sm as well opens opportunities to cancel chain them (she moves into short range to perform it, but started at LM is safer), increasing the chance of freezing your opponent. Once the freeze is applied rush in and strike! The two supports will periodically boost you in battle as well. Note that the battle skill evaluations are based on my own thoughts and experiences with the game, I'm sure not everyone will agree with my ratings; feel free to post your own assessments of these abilities or any other comments relating to Nel. |
