Life in The Sikh Empire?

HI all,

As both a prolific reader and a qualified author, with a degree in Creative Writing, I've always been particularly interested in the sub-genre of fiction known as Alternate History, exploring how things might have turned out if an important key point in history had gone differently. Some time ago, I drew up plans for a series of up to 9 novels where the point of divergence is the survival of Kanwar Nau Nihal Singh after the collapse at the Lahore Fort in Nov 1840; I don't want to reveal too many spoilers, but this basically results in the failure of the Dogras to maintain a hold on power through a puppet figurehead (the purpose Nau Nihal Singh served for over a year, from Maharajah Kharak Singh's disposition from power until his death on the day of his scheduled coronation), ousting the treacherous factions within the Sikh military leadership, which leads to vital changes to the outcomes of the Anglo-Sikh Wars, and allows the Sikh Empire to not just endure, but thrive as an independent nation.

The thing is, while I think I've got a pretty good grasp on the 'facts and figures' side of things- key events, important individuals, the balance of power in the royal court and out on the battlefields- I feel like I don't know enough about the setting, either physical or social, to do the concept justice yet. What did the scenery look like in Lahore at the time, and across the Punjab in general? And far more importantly, what would things have actually been like for the people who lived their lives in the Sikh Empire- not just for high-profile members of the nobility, but for ordinary common people, living in villages and working in the fields? Does anyone know of any sources from that period, or of any valid research material at all (in the English language- I'm not really literate in Punjabi) that could provide some information on the subject, and help me to finally get this project up off the ground?

Thanks

I didn't find the right solution from the internet.
