Well, if any of you didn't already know, I love music. A lot. All sorts of music. Finding and listening to new music is one of my greatest passions. I figure it's about time I make a topic on here to spam!
As I said, I'm really into all sorts of music. Most of what I listen to is of the metal variety, but I enjoy essentially everything. Here's some convoluted genre names that I enjoy, and some (maybe) recognizable examples: Metal Progressive - Dream Theater Death - Death (LOL!), Morbid Angel Trad(itional) - Iron Maiden Sludge - Neurosis Metallic Hardcore - Misery Signals, Shai Hulud Deathcore - Veil of Maya "Djent" (Experimental Prog) - Periphery
Electronic Dance Music Psychadelic Ambient (Psybient) - Sphongle Psytrance - Infected Mushroom Intelligent Dance Music (IDM) - Aphex Twin Breakcore - The Flashbulb Eurodance - Basshunter
Rock Progressive - Yes, King Crimson Alternative - Foo Fighters Country - Charlie Daniels Band Indie - Ted Leo, New Pornographers, Neutral Milk Hotel (pretty broad label) Post-Rock - Explosions in the Sky Dream Pop - Beach House Jazz Cool - Miles Davis Fusion - Return To Forever Dixieland - Louis Armstrong Bebop - Charlie Parker
Pop R&B - The Dream Rap - Kanye West
I'm sure I'm forgetting stuff, but it's a start! More stuff to come, including a buttload of youtube links.
EDIT: If anyone wants recommendations tailored to your interests, just post some artists that you like, and I'll try to come up with something new that you might be interested in! If the wall of links scares you, feel free to ask for something specific!
I figure most of you haven't heard of any of that convuluted nonsense, so I'm going to post a whole bunch of youtube links, in the hopes of showing you something new! I love new music, and I hope you all do too. As always with youtube, the quality isn't great - if you enjoy what you hear, I definitely recommend buying the album or at least getting a good quality mp3! (PM me for help)
I'll start with some less offensive stuff (read: no super distorted metal with screaming vocals)
ROCK
Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea Indie Rock/Folk, the title track from their album "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea. These guys are the quintessential indie rock band. This album was their magnum opus, and afterwards the fame got to be a bit too much for the lead singer/songwriter, Jeff Mangum. Mostly acoustic. Really great stuff here that I think anyone can enjoy.
Minus The Bear - Pachuca Sunrise Experimental/Indie Rock, from their sophomore album "Menos el Oso" These guys are pretty funky. They do a lot of really cool guitarwork, with gentle tones and a relaxing atmosphere. Lots of tapping and experimentation with time signatures.
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - Me and Mia Indie punk/rock/pop, from the "Shake The Sheets" album. Ted Leo is one of my favorite musicians. Everything he does just screams genuine passion. His sound might not be the most unique or innovative, but he does everything he does well, including writing great lyrics.
Explosions In The Sky - First Breath After Coma Post-rock, from the album "The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place". These guys make beautiful instrumental music. Their songs are generally long, this one borders on 10 minutes, but it's definitely worth listening to all the way through. Multi-guitar soundscapes that, if you let them, can take you on a journey. This is great lying in bed headphone music. Really uplifting. This song is just too good - I really recommend you all check this out because it really is just absolutely beautiful. If yo like this, I really recommend getting a better quality version - the guitar work gets pretty intricate and it's a bit hard to decipher on youtube.
Circa Survive - Dyed In The Wool Indie/Progressive Rock/Post-Hardcore, from their latest album, "Blue Skye Noise". This album is a bit of a turn away from their post-hardcore roots, though the influence is still there. They really stepped it up on this album, and I love it. Their vocalist is excellent, though many people don't like his voice. Don't know much else to say here, just good rock music. Some progressive tendencies, some guitar intricacies. Great, great vocals.
dredg - Sanzen Progressive/Alternative Rock, from the album "El Cielo". Non-traditional alternative rock. Not much to say that I haven't said about the other bands, but definitely check this out if you dug the other links. The entire album is wonderful.
Okay, I'm going to start moving away from the indie rock stuff, as I'm starting to repeat myself too much! If you like that stuff, feel free to bug me for more!
ELECTRONIC
Air - Kelly Watch The Stars Electronic/Downtempo/Chill Out, from the album "Moon Safari". These guys are great to relax to, or "Chill Out" as the subgenre would imply. Fun/quirky electronic music, synthesized vocals, fairly simple but always interesting. They manage to avoid falling into the stagnant repetitiveness of a lot of downtempo electronica.
Aphex Twin - Girl/Boy Song Electronic/Drum&Bass/IDM, from "RIchard D. James Album". Aphex Twin is probably one of the most well-known non-trance electronic artists, and for good reason. Great drum patterns, use of "glitch" noises and more traditional sounds. This song features some great string lines on top of break-beat drums and other electronic sounds.
edIT - Certified Air Raid Material Electronic/Glitch-Hop/IDM, title track from "Certified Air Raid Material". This is some really cool (mostly) instrumental hip-hop with plenty of glitch noises and really great beats.
Infected Mushroom - Vicious Delicious Psychadelic Trance, another title track! These guys are probably the biggest name in psytrance, and the popularity is very much justified. Really great dance music. Feels good, man.
Shpongle - Levitation Nation Electornic/Psybient/World Music, from "Nothing Lasts...But Nothing Is Lost". Unfortunately the quality on this link isn't great. These guys are excellent relaxation music. Put them on some good headphones at let it take you to a whole new world. Some parts might feel slow or repetitive, but I urge you to keep listening .There's a bit of a lul in this song, but when the guitar comes in about halfway through, it just gets phenomenal. This ends abruptly, but that's because the whole album is one long track, essentially. Definitely give it a spin if you like this.
The Flashbulb - Mellann Electronic/Breakcore/IDM, from the album "Kirlian Selections". This is perhaps my favorite electronic musician. And my favorite electronic album. It's crazy and all over the place, but wonderfully composed. He mixes classical music and breakcore excellently, to really interesting conclusions. This is a more ambient/relaxed song, and I'm going to give another link from this album to showcase the more crazy/less accessible side. Lots of great piano in this one.
The Flashbulb - Chik Habit Electronic/Breakcore/IDM, from the album "Flexing Habitual". This shows his crazier side. It's not the song I really wanted to link to, but it wasn't on youtube. So definitely get the album "Kirlian Selections" if you like these two songs. Some cool vocals in this. Actually, one more from The Flashbulb just cause he's so good.
The Flashbulb - Kirlian Choices Electronic/Breakcore/IDM (again). Also from "Kirlian Choices". This is another crazy one, but not as crazy as "Binedump" which unfortunately isn't on youtube! Really excellent stuff!
Okay, stepping away from EDM and into metal territory. Will start off easy, with instrumentals and clean singing. No (excessive) death metal vocals yet. As a note, the term "Djent" is an onomatopoeia that describes a heavier, chunkier chug noise. More specific info here. It's status as a subgenre is pretty heavily debated, but it is a fun descriptor for the increasingly popular style of progressive metal. Djent dj-djent djent djen-djent. The d is mostly silent.
METAL (Minimal screaming)
Animals As Leaders - Tempting Time Metal/Progressive/Djent, from their self-titled debut album. There's a whole ton of guitar going on here. Lots of layering, for which I definitely recommend getting better quality versions. I always find something new layered into the music. The bands mastermind, Tosin Abasi, uses an 8 string guitar, with a unique style he's been developing. Lots of two handed tapping, sweep picking, and guitar-wankery. Great stuff though. Some really cool electronic backing stuff too. Instrumental.
Cloudkicker - Dysphoria Metal/Progressive/Sludge("Post-Metal")/Djent, from the album "The Discovery". This is a one-man-band, who releases all his work for free download here!. Instrumental stuff, really cool metal-soundscapes. Lots of groove and atmosphere.
Cynic - Integral Birth Metal/Jazz Fusion/Technical Death/Progressive, from the album "Traced In Air". These guys are pioneers of the metal-fusion sound. They are excellent. There are some death metal vocals, but they're used as backing to the lead vocoded vocals. I find them some of the most tasteful growl vocals in all of metal. Really great technical guitar riffing, and really great calm, jazz-fusiony sections. Love this band. Sound quality isn't great, unfortunately.
Devin Townsend Project - Supercrush! Metal/Progressive/Power Pop, from the album "Addicted". Devin Townsend, of Strapping Young Lad. steps into pop territory on this album, and he does it greatly. This song starts with some really great crushing metal chugs, and goes into an excellent, relaxed pop section with some briliant female vocals. Devin Townsend's excellent operatic singing is showcased well, too.
(At this point, I'm scrolling through my foobar library, so it'll kind of be in alphabetical order. Not the best for diversity, but check the genres in the description if all this prog isn't your thing)
Dream Theater - Take The Time Metal/Progressive, from the album "Images and Words". Early Dream Theater at it's finest. A wonderfully talented group of musicians. Lots of guitar wankery, but John Petrucci is one of the best at it. Vocals might annoy some, they kinda do me. He's a great singer with excellent range, but the tone of his voice bothers me a bit. These guys have gone through a few sound changes, so I'll put a couple more links up. On this album, they've got a lighter, Rush-esque prog-rock sound.
Dream Theater - Strange Deja Vu Metal/Progressive, from the album "Scenes From A Memory". This is perhaps my favorite Dream Theater album. It's their first with virtuoso keyboardest Jordan Rudess, and his ragtime style is really excellent here (though it gets stale on later albums). It's a concept album, so there's lots of repeated themes and whatnot through the album. It's excellent from start to finish. This is where the band starts to take a heavier metal edge to their sound.
Dream Theater - Panic Attack Metal/Progressive, from "Octavarium. At this point, Dream Theater has fully emerged themselves in the "heavy" side of metal. Excellent bass riff at the beginning of this. James LaBrie's singing on this isn't quite as annoying either. There's some really groovy parts in this one.
Electrocution 250 - Ridiculosous Metal/Progressive/Shred, from their only album "Electric Cartoon Music From Hell". These guys are, as the song name implies, ridiculous. It's their take on what classic cartoon music would be played metal-style. Lots of excellent, excellent guitar and keyboard shredding. Really, really fun instrumental metal.
Iron Maiden - Rainmaker Metal/Trad, from the album "Dance of Death". Everyone should know these guys! But this song is too awesome not to post. One of my favorites from Maiden.
Liquid Tension Experiment - Universal Mind Metal/Progressive/Jazz Fusion, from their self-titled. This is a side-project of Dream Theater, with Tony Levin on the Chapman Stick, which is an awesome instrument. Great instrumental prog/fusion. More excellent guitar wankery from Petrucci.
Machinae Supremacy - Dreadnaught Metal/Power/Video Game, from "Deus Ex Machinae". These guys use a SidStation, a synthesizer that uses the SidChip from the Commodore 64! Really fun stuff, the SidStation adds a neat element, though it's a bit hard to hear on this youtube link.
Chimp Spanner - The Mirror Metal/Progressive/Ambient/Djent, from "At The Dream's Edge". Another one-man instrumental band. Really cool compositions here, lots of groove. The synth lines are awesome.
Opeth - Windowpane Metal/Progressive/Death, from "Damnation". This is Opeth's clean album. No growling here! Excellent, mellow song. You're missing out on what really makes Opeth great, though: the contrast between heavy, brutal metal parts and mellow sections like these.
Pelican - Autumn Into Summer Metal/Atmoshperic/Sludge/Post-Rock, from "The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw". These guys are very atmospheric instrumental metal. If you liked Explosions In The Sky, check these guys out. Lots of great guitar scapes. As with all atmospheric music/post-rock, it can be a bit slow at times, building up to the intense parts. But definitely try to make it all the way through. Or at least about 4-5 minutes in. My favorite part is somewhere around there. Unfortunately their drummer sucks balls, but he's not particularly offensive on this album, as he is on later efforts. Seriously, fire that guy, he's awful.
Planet X - Alien Hip Hop Metal/Progressive/Jazz Fusion. More instrumental Prog-Fusion. Great drumming, great keyboards. Groovy stuff. For fans of Dream Theater and Liquid Tension.
Porcupine Tree - The Sound of Muzak Progressive Rock/Metal, from "In Absentia. Unfortunately, youtube doesn't seem to have any album versions of any of the songs I wanted to link to for this band. This is a live performance by the drummer, but the backing music is from the album. The drums are a bit louder than the music though, but it's still excellent. Atmospheric prog rock, with metal tinges. And phenomenal drumming.
Protest the Hero - Heretics And Killers Metal/Progressive/Mathcore, from the album "Kezia". There's some backing growl vocals here, but mostly really great singing. These guys are really fun, sometimes pop-y, sometimes post-hardcore-esque, but all balls-to-the-wall progressive metal. Really fun stuff.
Riverside - Volte-Face Metal/Progressive/Rock, from "Second Life Syndrome". These guys are similar to Porcupine Tree and Dream Theater. Not much else to say, but give 'em a listen if you're a fan of those other two.
Russian Circles - Carpe Post-rock/Metal, from "Enter". Instrumental stuff here. Really, really great. Post-rock/metal in a different vein than Explosions or Pelican. More on the metal side. Definitely a beast of their own.
Spatic Ink - A Wild Hare Metal/Progressive/Shred, from "Ink Complete". This is in the same vein as Electrocution 250 - ridiculous instrumental metal. This song is a metal transcribing of a number of scenes of bambi! The video i link has the song synced to the vids, and it's really cool. Great guitar shredding.
Symphony X - Inferno (Unleash The Fire) Metal/Progressive/Power, from "The Odyssey". Progressive metal, a la Dream Theater, but with a more Power Metal edge. I really want to link to the 20-some minute concept song based on The Odyssey, but that's just too much. Good prog metal.
The Lord Weird Slough Feg - High Passage/Low Passage Metal/Trad/Power, from "Traveller", a concept album about the Pen and Paper RPG of the same name! Traditional Metal in the vein of Iron Maiden. This has an awesome galloping riff that makes me want to beat shit up.
Metal (with screaming)
Finally, the bulk of what I listen to lately. Try to not let the vocals turn you off from the great music!
Baroness - A Horse Called Golgotha Metal/Sludge/Progressive, from "Blue Record". One of my favorite band! And one of my favorite albums. Everything this band does is gold. Really, really, really good metal music, with that sludge groove and progressive song structure and southern rock edge. The vocals are more of a shout than a scream, and I find them much less abrasive than traditional screams.
Between The Buried And Me - Mordecai Metalcore/Progressive/Death, from "The Silent Circus". This band is probably my favorite! I'm going to post a couple songs by them as they made a pretty drastic shift. This is much less progressive than their later work. This starts out really brutal and fast, but don't let that turn you off too much! There are excellent, excellent clean sections! That's a pretty good rule of thumb for BTBAM. There's always an awesome clean section.
Between the Buried and Me - Selkies: The Endless Obsession Metalcore/Progressive, from "Alaska". This is from the first album to feature their current line up, and marks their transition into more progressive territory. It also features one of the best solos ever! Make sure to listen all the way through for that awesome solo. Starts as an awesome jazz solo, and goes into some of the best guitar sweeps I've heard.
Between The Buried And Me - White Walls Metal/Progressive, from "Colors". This is my favorite song from my favorite album! It's a long'un, at ~15 minutes. The link is part 1, part two should be in the sidebar. The best part is the last few minutes! But it's all great, be sure to listen all the way through! This album is full-fledged prog. Some of the best music I've ever heard. Brutal breakdowns, blissful clean sections, excellent solo. Everything here is perfect. If you like this, definitely get Colors. It's my favorite album for a reason!
Burst - I Hold Vertigo Metalcore/Sludge/Progressive, from "Lazarus Bird". This is an excellent band, a good mix of all the genres I listed. They're from somewhere in Europe, but broke up recently. Unfortunate.
Cormorant - Scavenger's Feast Metal/Folk/Black/Death/Progressive, from "Metazoa". These guys take all their varied influences and mesh them very well. They're true metalheads. Their lyrics are excellently written as well. Awesome basswork. This is from their first and only full-length. Expecting great things to come from them. If you like this, be sure to check out the whole album as they delve into many different genres.
Darkest Hour - The Tides Metalcore/Melodic Death, from "The Eternal Return". Excellent guitar work here. The solo in this song is particularly awesome. The vocalist gets really stale, as he doesn't really have any range. Just that one scream sound. Oh well. Great music otherwise.
Death - Crystal Mountain Metal/Death, from "Symbolic". These guys are one of the founders of death metal! RIP Chuck Schuldiner, the riffmaster himself. Excellent guitarwork!
Fear Factory - Mechanize Metal/Industrial, from "Mechanize". I'm not a big Fear Factory fan, but this album slays. Part of that is due to Gene Hoglan's excellent drumming. Great production. Some cool basslines in this song as well.
Haunted Shores - Sentient Glow Metal/Progressive/Djent, from their split EP with Cyclamen. This is one of my favorite songs of late! The vocals are just excellent, and the song has an amazing groove. The drums are programmed, but excellent. Everything about this is awesome. If you like this, check out When In Oslo, also from their split EP. I NEED a full-length release from this band, desperately.
The Human Abstract - Mea Culpa Metalcore/Progressive/Neo-classical, from "Nocturne". This album is excellent! More progressive metalcore, with classical elements. Not much else to say!
Isis - Backlit Metal/Sludge/Atmospheric, from "Panopticon. These guys started what some people like to call "Post-metal", the joining of metal and post-rock. They're another one of my favorites. Great for relaxing. Just really beautiful music. They've mastered the build-up. There's a bassline in this song that just kills me every time I hear it. It's so good.
Mastodon - Blood And Thunder Metal/Sludge/Progressive, from "Leviathan". A concept record about Moby Dick! Awesome. I THINK THAT SOMEONE IS TRYING TO KILL MEEEE! every time I hear that I need to get up and punch the air. Moshing to this song live was so intense. This is earlier stuff by Mastodon, their later efforts get more progressive. This is my favorite song by them, though. And probably their most popular. Got that southern rock vibe, similar to Baroness. SPLIT YOUR LUNGS WITH BLOOD AND THUNDER, WHEN YOU SEE THE WHITE WHAAAAAAALE!
Misery Signals - Homecoming Metal/Hardcore/Progressive, from "Controller". I absolutely love every song these guys have ever written. It was really hard to pick just one! They're the best metalcore act, hands down. Raw emotion, very powerful. If you like this, be sure to check out their albums. They're all great! Their first has a different vocalist, but he's awesome too. These guys do the best brutal chugging riffs, the best staccato riffs, and the best melodic clean sections. Everything they do, they do well. I have never been disappointed in anything they've ever done!
Mors Principium Est - Cleansing Rain Metal/Melodic Death, from "Liberation=Termination". Every song these guys do sounds kinda the same, but it's a damn good song. Pretty straightforward melodic death metal, but it's great. I think so, at least.
Neurosis - No River To Take Me Home Metal/Sludge/Atmospheric, from "The Eye Of Every Storm". These guys are the kings of atmosludge. Crushing, atmospheric metal.
Obscura - Anticosmic Overload Metal/Technical Death/Progressive, from "Cosmogenesis". Phenomenal bass and drums here. Guitarwork is good too! Excellent tech-death.
Opeth - Beneath The Mire Metal/Death/Progressive, from "Ghost Reveries". The intro to this song is absolutely amazing. Even if you don't like it once the vocals kick in, I recommend listening to this just cause the intro is so fucking awesome. Opeth is another band where everything they do is excellent. The intro guitar riffs are seriously amazing, though. And, as with all Opeth songs, this goes through a number of feels. There's the awesome intro, a brutal section, then some awesome mellow clean parts. If you really don't like the death metal vocals, check out their album "Damnation", it's entirely clean, and full of the awesome mellow parts Opeth is known for. In fact, I'll link to one of those songs in the first metal section.
Painted In Exile - Revitalized Metal/Progressive/Death, from the "Revitalized" EP. These guys are awesome! And super young. They're pretty similar to BTBAM, in that they go all over the place. They'll do noodly progressive lines, great brutal chugging breakdowns, and excellently executed jazz sections. Their major problem is that, in going all over the place, their songs loose a cohesive sound. But they manage to incorporate all their ideas without sounding forced - it all flows well.
Periphery - Icarus Lives! Metal/Progressive/Djent, from their self-titled debut. The kings of djent! This band has taken over my soul lately. They are absolutely amazing. So incredibly groovy. They just make me dance. And incredible production! DEFINITELY check this out. It's excellent.
SiKtH - Skies Of The Millenium Night Metal/Mathcore/Progressive, from "Trees Are Dead And Dried Out Wait For Something Wild". TAKE A LOOK AT THE SKY IT'S SO FUCKING BEAUTIFUL! These guys have two vocalists, and they do lots of awesome things with them. Very scat-like, fast and syllabic, high pitched and crazy. These guys are beyond talented, and their music is nuts. Definitely give them a listen.
My musical repertoire is fairly limited in comparison to most, so I'm totally going to be checking out whatever you post in hopes of broadening my musical horizons. Gotta say though, total kudos for listening to Shai Hulud. <3
whoa! i had no idea you were a metalcore fan, kat! excellent! you would loooooooooove misery signals, be sure to check them out when i get to the metal stuff.
I added some bolded headings to the youtube post, for easier navigation. Eventually I'm going to add a "For Fans Of" section to each link, but that'll be harder and take more time. I hope I don't scare anyone away with the wall of links!
Aren't there a couple of songs from Colors that don't have screaming? I might be thinking of one of the other albums you recommended, but the less growly screamy songs were a lot better.
Hey Adam, ever consider using spoiler tags for this topic? XD It'd make the Great Wall of Links much easier to navigate. For instance,
Code:
[spoiler=I like Kitties!]I think they're so cute and cuddly! Kitties are the best! [url=http://www.hellokittyblog.co.uk/images/hello-kitty-cat.jpg]Here is a picture of one![/url][/spoiler]
Back on topic... XD My tastes in music are very simple. I don't analyze songs the same way you do, Adam XD I just know whether or not I like the song. That said, I'm totally up for listening to new songs. I'll probably try out some few links every day or something.
For now, I'll share this song. It's Staralfur, by Sigur Ros. The song is an Icelandic lullaby, and I think enjoyable to anyone regardless of how deeply they analyze music XD Yeah, my tastes are too simple for people who are really into it... XD
Funnily enough Adam, my interest in Shai Hulud was instigated due to being a huge fan of the Dune series. Upon seeing a band named after something from that universe.. I had to listen and realized they were rockin', which just increased the coolness.
Aren't there a couple of songs from Colors that don't have screaming? I might be thinking of one of the other albums you recommended, but the less growly screamy songs were a lot better.
Their vocalist does clean singing in pretty much every song any more, but I can't think of any where he doesn't growl at all. Except the intro track on their latest record, The Great Misdirect. It also is absolutely fantastic! One of my favorite songs by them, actually. Here's a link!:
oh, and another from The Great Misdirect! It features their lead guitarist's (maybe not great) vocals at the beginning as well. this one is fairly pink floyd esque, but pretty country at the beginning Between The Buried And Me - Desert of Song
Daphne - I hadn't, but that's a good suggestion. I'll go through and do that tomorrow. Also, sigur ros rule! I neglected to throw a song by them up on the link - a lot of rock bands got missed out in my first sweep, so I'll have to go back through. If you're a fan of Sigur Ros, check out some of the other post-rock stuff! I think everything I linked to was instrumental, which you might not like as much. Sigur Ros has great vocals. But, give Explosions in the Sky a listen. Maybe Pelican, too. Isis might be a stretch, but they're awesome as well and in a similar vein. Russian Circles too.
Moshi - What are some stuff you like? I can probably recommend you some stuff based on bands you like!
Kat - Definitely check out that Misery Signals song! It was hard to select one, as their entire catalog is excellent, but Shai Hulud is one pretty much their biggest influence!
EDIT: Okay, I just did some basic categorizing with spoiler tags, I'm going to go through and make a more specific categorization system later. I'll have one for indie rock, post-rock, sludge metal, djent, etc etc. Or something like that. Not sure how I'll do it yet, but at least for now it's not a mile and a half long when you enter the topic.
also, if anyone has suggestions for how to organize this, feel free to give them. I'm at a bit of a loss as the best way to do it.
Hey Adam, still listen to Machinae Supremacy? The singer eventually grew on me, and I still listen to them.
"You shit piles give chase, I will kill your dicks!" "What? What does that even mean? You're gonna kill my dick? Well I'll kill your dick, how 'bout that, huh?"
I'm not terribly good at discussing music. It's especially rough when I try to get into new stuff. I wind up potentially not caring much for it, but if I give it a few more listens, I'll maybe start to develop an appreciation for it.
Minus the Bear's Pachuca's Sunrise is a good instance of this. First time listening I liked it quite a bit, but something didn't feel right about it so I quickly moved on. That was last night. I had a second listen just now and it's already grown on me.
I've listened to a the flashbulb songs, but I'm too tired to comment now. I'll get to them and others later. X_x
"Even the surgeon general will clearly tell you how hazardous it is to your health to have an anus up your rectum. Are you a homosexual?" - Sister Elizabeth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2swEcsZTxPc)
aww ye. and yeah, it's pretty hard to talk about music. i'm not even very good at it.
glad you're liking minus the bear, though! definitely check out some of their other stuff. the flashbulb is pretty crazy. definitely a lot to take in there.
also, the "something" not right might have been non-standard time signatures. not sure what pachucha's in, but MtB experiments a lot in that area. it's definitely awkward listening to non 3 or 4/4 songs 'til you're used to it
This song is pretty chaotic. And yet it's organized so well that it doesn't feel chaotic for me. >_> So much so that I've listened to it about three times now and two of the three times, I got caught up in something else and it turned into normal background noise for me. Binedump and Flashbulb as a whole gets a thumbs up.
"Even the surgeon general will clearly tell you how hazardous it is to your health to have an anus up your rectum. Are you a homosexual?" - Sister Elizabeth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2swEcsZTxPc)
Binedump - The Flashbulb gets a 5/5 from me. The song is awesome and reminds me of some of the awesome tracks they had on FreQuency. I love the different effects this song has that are constantly changing and ever so erratic. I definitely will be listening to this in the future
Misery Signals - Labyrinthian gets a 0/5 for growl vocals. The song had the startup (the sound of the drums, the effects on the guitar) that made it scream "growl vocals are coming!" distinctive of the style, even though I hadn't read your growl vocal warning. Like I've joked about a lot of songs in this style: I like the first 30 seconds and that's it. Except this one only has 20 seconds of peace. After that, it opens to growl vocals and distorted open D. Ugh ugh.
The Dream - Right Side of My Brain is just another R&B song with waaay to much autotune. 1/5 because I won't put it at the level of growl vocals.
"You shit piles give chase, I will kill your dicks!" "What? What does that even mean? You're gonna kill my dick? Well I'll kill your dick, how 'bout that, huh?"
Labyrinthian did not make me a happy Alf. I mean, I won't knock a song off right away for the growls but. . . it just felt like the vocalist was trying to make noise. And that could have worked. . . except I wasn't feeling anger in it or anything like it. . . . didn't like for the most part.
Right Side of the Brain is an enjoyable R&B song, in my opinion. Nothing extraordinary, but it makes me want to check them out to see if any of their other stuff is good. I don't know why, but I have a good feeling about The Dream.
"Even the surgeon general will clearly tell you how hazardous it is to your health to have an anus up your rectum. Are you a homosexual?" - Sister Elizabeth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2swEcsZTxPc)
The Dream is pretty much the best popular R&B artist out there!
He wrote Umbrella, and several other chart toppers.
As far as Misery Signals goes, yeah, I knew most of you wouldn't like them. Labrynthian doesn't have as much of the calm melodic stuff they do, so maybe I'll do one of those one day.
Today, I have a bonus for you! Live Video of the Day ^_^. This one's got more growling, but there's an excellent melodic section a couple minutes in
I like the Circa Survive song...but that definitely sounds like a female vocalist and looking into it they don't have a female member....so I'm pretty fucking confused.
But that's a lot more my speed than the btbam song, although it was kind of amusing to actually see that guy doing the growls. He does not look like a growler.
yeah, anthony green's voice is awesome, but very confusing.
and, yeah, tommy's such a small guy. waiting outside the venue when i saw them, he walked by and we waved and when the people behind us figured out who he was, they were like, "....this dude's their singer? he's tiny!"
apparently it's very amusing to watch me practice. *shrug*
