How do you plan out your novels/short stories? I don't plan very far ahead. My other two novels I didn't plan much at all, but with the one I'm working on now, I've been trying to at least plan a couple of pages ahead. Sometimes it works, sometimes I don't pay attention to what I was planning. So, what about you? Do you plan it all out then write it, or just start writing and see where it goes? |

With Scrivener, I used the notecard feature to plan all of the scenes ahead of time. Now, I just write down major plot points. And with the novel that I'm currently working on, I write a scene, then I write down my ideas for the next few scenes, and then so on. For short stories, I usually don't do any planning. |

I basically have a plot and character and that's it. Maybe a few ideas on climactic scenes, or how it ends, but not really. |

I use post-it notes to plan and stick them all over the wall above my desk. Each orange/pink one is a chapter summary, though a lot of the later ones haven't been changed since I started editing and they're mostly wrong as I've either cut them or condensed them into earlier chapters. Post-its above the white line (orange/blue) are just important events, dates and stuff that I need to remember and keep consistant. Blue ones are generally stuff to remember and green/yellow are just editing notes. I also have folder somewhere which has my research in it, as well as that little notebook on top of my intray-thing. My planning is generally rather chaotic. xD Here's a picture:

Whoa is right. Everything I need to remember or stray ideas for later in the novel go in a separate document in the same folder, but it gets messy after a while because I can never find what I want if the document gets too long. Post-its seem like they might work better :p. They'd be easier to see at least, haha. |

They're all for Hamartia, Majyk. Post-its actually work really well. You can put them on top of each other, move them around easily and then copy it with the document for your novel. For Hamartia, I've separtated it into one chapter per document for editing so it's much easier to see everything.
