How do you edit? I write soemthing and then go through everything I can on computer, then I print it and go through it with a coloured pen. I'm editing a novel at the moment and I've got post-it notes all over my bedroom wall, with what each chapter's meant to have in it. ![]() I hate editing, personally. It drives me crazy and takes forever. What do you think? |

I print it out and go through it with a red pen, then have someone proof-read it if it's short. I like editing, especially when I'm not happy with what I've wrote, because then I get a chance to fix it.

For my last novel (editing took forever), I printed it out as I wrote it and edited small things as I went along, then posted it up to be critiqued, edited from those, then read it a few more times, cutting lots of stuff that I'd found wasn't needed (characters, scenes, etc.). For my newest novel, I've been printing it out as I write it and editing small mistakes again (grammar, typos), and once I'm finished with the writing, I'm going to leave it for a while and come back in a few weeks (or as long as I can stand to wait). Then I've got some big things to fix in the beginning before anyone reads it. I'm glad I'll be finished writing this novel soon, but I'm also not looking forward to editing (although it always gives me something to do while having writers block or whatever :p). |

I HATE editing. I just don't have a lot of patients for it! I have A.D.D. and I think that makes it worse. In the past I've just read it on my computer, but that hurts my eyes, so I think once I'm done with my story (or soon to be novel?) I'll probably print out chapters at a time and edit them...And I'll probably keep them in some sort of file, because I also like my things organized, and I hate clutter. ![]() I have no idea how you can like editing, Wannabe Writer...it drives me nuts. o_O Now I have a question about editing (if you don't mind me asking this, Lykaios): what do you do if the whole thing is really wacky and needs millions of hours of editing? Do you just start over, or practically redo to whole book? |

Allyson: I'm having that probem now. Aside from the main storyline, everything I wrote during Nano on my book needs scrapping or rewiting. I gave up trying to fill holes because I'd changed it so much, so now I'm going through it chapter by chapter and either rewriting it from scratch or editing up what I have to fit the new series of events. I've also cut a character from the whole thing because he was annoying me. I won't start the whole book again, because some of what I've written just needs touching to make it fit, but it depends on thestory and what you already have to whether you just start again, in my opinion.
