Most powerful Empires in history

Most Powerful Empires, no particular order:

1) Roman Empire - Military, Economic, Political, and Cultural Dominance
Also their rule still has an effect on Western Society Today (Re: Romance languages and most large cities being former Roman Trade Posts)

2) Greek Empire - One of the largest in the world, culturally forms the basis for Western Thought.

3) British Empire - Military, Economic, and Cultural dominance. English being one of the most widely used languages across the globe is one of it's biggest marks.

4) American Empire - Military dominance after the cold war, Economic dominance since from WWII to essentially the early 2000s, and Cultural Dominance that is still present. America in my opinion, is no longer has the vicegrip over the world that it experienced after the USSR collapsed. Right now, the worlds pretty multipolar, with China, Russia, US, and EU all relatively strong. Not one of those countries/blocs could take the other three out by themselves, which leads to more politics etc.

Empires that were very Powerful at their time of existence, but didn't have that lasting of an impact based on my knowledge (I don't have a lot of knowledge about asian culture, mainly just Western)

5) Mongol Empire
6) Umayyad Caliphate (basically the emergence of Islam)
7) Spanish Empire

I also want to note that I think China will be the next dominant power, most likely within the next 50 years.

It is without a doubt my homeland will crumble, in some form or another. And soon. Let it be us though, the Communists, Marxists, Socialists, whatever you call yourselves, be the unifying force in rebuilding this nation into a respectable, and truly equal nation of comrades! :sflag:

I don't think that the US will collapse as soon as everyone is predicting. I believe that between the years 2020 and 2030, China will implode into a civil war as people will begin to demand more freedom. China will not last as a communist state (if you consider it to be one). With civil war in China, investors will look to more stable parts of the world like South America. The reasons I say this and not India is because within that same time frame or eariler, Pakistan will also implode (due to is current politcal crisis and unstable leadership) and India will be ready and willing to invade Pakistan to try and stabilize things. South America seems and option because it is a largely untapped area of the world. If the US continues down its current path, the US will only continue to decline. If the US it to remain as the world's #1 nation, the US will have to fix its current budget deficits by raising taxes and cutting spending. With the US debt continuing to decline, the US dollar will regain strenght, lowering oil prices for one and all (Finally some relief at the pump) and reducing China's influence on the US. The next step will be to change America's image of " It's our way, or the highway" theme and make huge efforts to renew relations around the world. Then finally the most crutial step, reduce spending on your military. If you haven't noticed, the US spends almost half of the worlds military budget and yet they can't even win the war in Afghanistan and Iraq. The US military also keeps on reducing in size as more advanced units become avalable but the catch is they cost almost 3 to 4 times what current units cost.

FUTURE

Russia (aka Russian Federation) will become the next world military power once the US collapses (yes it will happen). As China will as well and with both the US and China out of the way the Russian will take the opportunity to gain their long lost influence on the world.

United Kingdom could very well hold their own as a world power, only reason they dont is because they want to be a bitch state of the US. But I seee that changing as this century moves on.

As Bubba pointed out the "third world" will finally become a focus on influence in one way or another during this century.

THE BIG QUESTION IS Who will lead the world to that long rumored "one world government"?

I agree with Velken and Bubba when you point out the "third world" will become a focus of influence. Indeed It's happening right now, we should only see Brazil; in the current economic crisis THEY GAVE MONEY TO SO CALLED RICH COUNTRIES to solve the situation and economically speaking, Brazil have all conditions to become a new power in the world.

Quite a popular thread, in my opinion on the Empire front is, repectally the British had the largest recorded in history but it was weak and unstable compared to the Mongol and Roman empire then they were very strong and stable, the British became very rich with its huge empire but her wealth was all abroad so when the empire crumbled, so did her wealth and to date it just gets by really in my opinion, sucking up to America, America will fall, and looking at things as they are China is growing massively and well the Russians can treat Europe as their bitches because they control most of the energy supply to Europe.

The Roman and Mongol empire were strong in the fact that they had good leadership, good military and they were very intellegent people, but like all empires with their imperialistic ways, they exploit the weak for their own gain, economically today, the west have good lives because they can get cheap goods for the explotation of china and its population.

Lets not over look two empires that I feel so far have been sadly neglected in this discussion

The Russian Empire by far the largest in history (land mass wise) was no joke. They expanded fast and even took territory from what was at one time part of the mongol empire.

Soviet Union was born out of the ashes of the Russian Empire and in my opinion was a true example of a modern day empire. It had the largest army in human history and a good structure at least during it's first 40 years.

Holy Roman Empire
I'm suprised to see this great pieace of history over looked by so many here. This midevil era power is what lead to the birth of germany in more ways than one.

:h&s: Who will lead comrade? If anyone it should be US. Though maybe not literally the good peolpe of this forum, but us as in proletarians, and soviets of the world. Our time will come, comrades. Sooner or later we will have to either unite as a species, or die as barbaric monsters incapable of an equal and truly civilized society. The bourgeoisie have oppressed us for too long and now their world is caving in upon them. A consequence of their actions. :h&s:

Who will lead the world is very hard to predict right now. The Globalization is still changing things and breaking the balance around the world. One point is sure, US will not lead the world alone anymore. It seems like a new Cold War could happen in the near future if we don't improve understanding with the Islamic World and the current capitalist model is condemned to dissapear because of being ecologically unsustainable in terms of production.

The most posible scenario could be an integration of regions in supranational entities like European Union, cooperating all together as a bloc to defend their interest against another bloc. The times of a single nation making an empire to control the world seems to be over. And I think the "one world government"(a masonic idea) is utopical by now.

When it comes down the bottom line "unification" of mankind has to happen if the species is to survive. Regardless of what anyone wants to believe humans do not want to destroy themselves, also future generations will not think like we do and as our parents and grand parents have. I feel a unified world will happen in this century, it will be at that point that humans finally take the next step into becoming one of the greater civilizations in this galaxy.
