I thought this would make for a good discussion.

There have been many, many empires threwout human history but which ones stand out in your minds that were the most powerful. Not just by military or economic but those whos influecne still to this day stands the test of time.

A few I want to give honorable mention to are

The British Empire
Mongol Empire
Roman Empire
Holy Roman Empire
Russian Empire

The most influenctial empire I have heard of would have to be one that still stands to this day: the American empire. A small, well-trained military, involved in most world issues, it has great impact on the policies of other nations. The massive corporations that grow from it's economy are found in every major country in the world. America has proven to be a decisive force in the modern world, and in all likelyhood will continue to be for many years to come. Chooseing them as my choice was difficult though, for as you said comrade, their were so many empires throughout history, it was hard to pick just one!

The only reason I disagree is technically the United States is not an empire. "A small military"...again no offense but where did you get that from. The US has one of the largest and most powerful military forces on the planet.

The United States is a modern powerful force but it is in no way deserving of being put next to the great empires of history.

"Small" i got from author Tom Clancy, small well trained units, using tactics. Not like the old soviet over-whelming numbers strategy (also used to be used by most other nations for a long time). Funding goes less into quantity and more into quality. Such as it taking $1,439,754 (# provided by UCLA) to train a single pilot for our Air Force. America has generally deployed less soldiers than the OpFor since WWII, relying on advanced training technics, state-of-the-art technology, and the fact that they have more nuclear weapons than just about anybody (except me :evilalien: ). America's military is, if anything, downsizing. With programs like Land Warrior, the secretive (yet legendary) 1st SFOD-D or Delta Force, and the Green Berets, the need for large amounts of GIs is decreasing rather quickly. Sped up by the fact that we have begun to pull out of Iraqi cities, tiny squads of special forces are proving to be more effective at fighting terrorists out in the desert than larger infantry groups. There is just simply no need for a large military when a smaller more cost-effective one does the job just fine. About the only branch that doesn't seem to be shrinking is the marines, which, in my opinion, haven't yet grasped the concept of "modern warfare". As for being an empire, America seems to fit the bill to me, large, influential, powerful, and with a handful of territories and satellite nations, it is the largest superpower in the world. (Even if that will probaly be contested in the coming years.)

Well I have to agree with Zaneth on the part about Empire. The US can be considered an Empire for the fact that they own overseas territories, and the fact they have every means of domination other nations. I can be seen economically, politically, and militarily. Dispite what some Americans think that the US will remain a the dominant power for the next 50 too 100 years, I dought it unless China fractures. If US continues to pile on debt, which now stands at almost 100% of your GDP, you can expect your influence to dwindle dispite remaining a powerful military power. If the US wants to retain its status as the global power, the US must raise taxes, cut usless spending like super advanced weaponary (cause you invest 20B-50B on new weapons and in 5 years it is already old tech), repair diplomatic relations, and so the its our way or the highway theme. Oh on the note of Empires, the US is the only nation that can do anything it wants without major consequences (eg. Invading nations halfway around the world cough.. cough... Iraq...cough)

As for other empires to consider, I would consider the Portuguese Empire to be one of the greatest (dispite your objections The_Many, you Dutch *astard).

The Portuguese Empire can be considered one of the greatest for four reasons.
1. It was the first Global Empire
2. Longest lived modern European colonial empires, spanning almost six centuries, from the capture of Ceuta in 1415 to the handover of Macau in 1999.
3. Portuguese it the 8th most spoken language world, with nearly 235M people. English, Spanish, and Russian are only ahead of Portuguese (Dutch only is spoken by about 45M :P Many)
4. For a country of almost 11M people the Portuguese have done very well.

The US will fall (or be defeated) before the next 20 years. It's time has been up for awhile...a long while.

If we talk about old imperialism is quite clear the British Empire was the most powerful empire ever seen and its influence is still alive thanks to USA have common roots culturally speaking.

But I think the list should be amplified to the following empires:

The French Empire
The Chinese Empire
The Spanish Empire
The Japanese Empire

All these empires had the supremacy over their competitors and still have influence in one way or another in terms of culture. If we consider the Spanish Empire, It had total supremacy over the rest of Europe until the Battle of Trafalgar against the British and the culture of the motherland (Spain) is the second widespreaded in the world after the english.

I agree with you!
The american imperialism is everywhere, expecially here in Europe
What about China defeating the USA? It could happen, but it would just lead to another kind of capitalism...
The world, today, has just one color

I'm sure that the most powerful Empire is the greater Roman Empire, most powerful and ruler over all Europe and the base of all cultures of today (except Chinese and Japanese Cultures).

At the Second Place I have to put the strongest (about military) Nazist German Empire, luckly defeated by all World Togheter during WWII.

At the Tird Place I put the "deathless" Soviet Empire, the only true Empire that can oppose American Capitalist and Corrupted "Democracy".
