Naota Harbor was home to many docks and many ships. Some only lived here for hours until their cargo was unloaded; some lived here for weeks to months; some simply never left. Many of these old and mostly unused boats had three fates. To be used for storage by some of the dock masters, to be stripped to their bones to be either sunk as aquatic environment or hauled to the junkyard, or to simply sit in the waters and rust.

A select few managed to prolong this fate while they lived out the last of their lives in the smaller docks of the harbor. One of the dockmasters who helped to run this water parking lot for boats was notably more business minded. With all the proper permissions needed to do so, they had gone about fixing up some of the more livable house boats. Once this was done, the plan was at its final step. Treat these boats as floating apartments or hotels, and rent them out at a cheap price for those in need for inexpensive lodging.

Inexpensive was the word that now put their temporary quarters on the water. Yet again, the chaotix's detective work had brought them from their typical homes. But, par for the course, once again they had little money to spend on amenities once they reached this city. This included both food and shelter. In their hunt for a cheap place to lodge, they had been pointed in the direction of the harbor. It took little more for the price to be said before the offer was taken up. And thus, the nearly penniless investigators called the harbor within the port city of Naota home for their stay.

One of three chaotix currently sat within this makeshift hotel room. He was in the corner of the small living room, out of the way and hopefully in an area where he could find the tranquil peace he sought. His legs were currently interwoven with each other and on each knee rested one of his hands. The chameleon's head was lowered slightly and his eyes closed. While the movement and sound of the water would interrupt the minds of most, Espio found it had a calming effect when he stopped and allowed his mind to focus only on that. This allowed for good meditation, and a good opportunity to re-center his mind. Currently, he had chosen to take advantage of this fact, and was beginning to fall into the relaxing state which concentration and an empty mind can bring.

Espio wouldn't have much longer to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, as a certain hyperactive bee was just returning to their temporary dwelling, flying directly inside to locate the chameleon. "Hey!! Espio! I'm back!" he declared, as though the buzzing of his flight alone wouldn't be enough to alert him to the fact. The highspeed flickering of Charmy's wings slowed to allow him to descend to the floor before Espio.

The thought didn't cross his mind that he might be disturbing the other's meditation, and he launched into his report as soon as his feet touched the ground. "I looked all around the harbor, and also in Naota for a while, but I didn't really find any work for us... But it was so great seeing everything! You guys should've come, it would've been a blast!" Charmy grinned, practically glowing at the recollection of his travels, though he might have been doing more sightseeing than job-searching. "I can go out again later if you want. Someone's gotta need us sooner or later, right?

Vector had until then been tucked quietly in the kitchen area. That was something of a miracle in itself as it was somewhat unclear how the large croc even fit in the tiny space. When he turned and moved in to the room with the rest, he was holding a medium sized steaming rice cooker and a white chef's hat and apron. He set it and three forks down ceremoniously on the crummy stool they were using as a coffee table with a deeply saddened expression.

"This is it boys... the last of the instant noodles..." he said, the tiny glint of a tear in his eye. Yeah... the detective agency needed work pretty darn bad.

He sat down and seemed transfixed, looking at it like it was his last meal, after all it might be for a while. "It doesn't even have chicken in it.... just... just chicken flavoring!!" he said, bawling somewhat comically.

Vector might be overreacting. Sure, they were down on their luck but it always seemed to spring back just in time to save them from starvation. Now might be just such a time. Perhaps their daily rationing of meals had paid off, held them out long enough, because it seemed the Chaotix were in luck as the supplied phone rang on the wall.

Upon hearing the buzz of the insect's wings in in front of him, Espio quickly knew his time with tranquility was over. As such, his eyes would open and one hand would move to take the report that was being offered out. After accepting what Charmy had so entusastically put in his face, he would get to his feet with a nod to confirm he heard what the bee had stated.

After this, he would turn his attention toward the crocodile. While he believed Vector was overreacting slightly to their current situation, things indeed didn't look very good. They would have to resort to other means of profit should they not be hired as detectives soon. The first and foremost idea that was on his list was busking. While not a favored activity by him, playing his shamisen on the streets of Naota might bring in a bit of change.

However, just as he was beginning to question himself for alternative means for scratching out a living, it seemed that it may not be necessary. When the ring of the phone reached him, his first reaction was to walk over to the device and pick it up. Once doing so and putting it close to his head, he would speak. "Chaotix Detective Agency."

Charmy flew into the air again at Vector's appearance, exuberant at the sight of the food he held. "Yay, I was hungry!!" Immediately, he zoomed to the stool to grab up one of the forks and jam it into the noodles, twirling it to then scoop them into his mouth. "It's hot," he immediately whined, disregarding that it was supposed to be, and stuck out his tongue after swallowing.

At Vector's following excess of emotion, he raised his eyes to him, blinking. "You don't need to act like it's such a big deal and ruin it for the rest of us, Vector," he admonished flatly. "It still tastes like chicken. Try it!" Charmy snatched up another fork, gathering noodles on it in the same way as he had his own, and then flew up in front of the crocodile's face to wave it near his snout.

It was then that the telephone rang, and Charmy spun to look toward it, dropping the fork to the floor in the process. "Hey, someone's calling us!" He darted after Espio as he answered it to flit around him. "Do they want to hire us? Who is it, who is it?!"

"Do I have to savor it... even if it isn't worth savoring... even if its the last meal I'll ever have?" He said, folding his arms and turning his nose up to the fork full of noodles that Charmy waving in front of his nose. Then the phone rang and his heart skipped a beat.

When that phone rang it meant only one of two possible things. It was either A: A creditor or the landlord (or boatlord in this case) wanting to take their money away, or B: the oh so rare and precious employer who wanted to offer it to them. At any rate phone calls were a sacred time, which was probably why Vector attempted to clobber Charmy and keep him from bothering Espio by covering his big mouth with a hand. "Shhhh!!"

"I have a job for you, and it will pay handsomely," came the calm, dry reply from the other end. "Do not ask questions, do not speak until I am finished if you wish to be hired.

"I am but an anonymous, concerned citizen. It has come to my attention that someone within our state is corrupt. After doing some intensive research the past few days, it has gone beyond my reach as an average man, to retrieve anymore information about this act of terrorism. It is a plot against this nation, and any true man would not have himself for it."

There was a slight pause, very short. A breath perhaps, or a sigh, before the male continued, tone still cold as steel. "In our nation's office of defense, GUN has a rat. The massive, overpopulated military project has no way of keeping an eye on such things, as can be shown by this incident and others prior.

"I ask that you utilize your abilities and equipment, the experience you have under your belt, so to speak, and put this leak in public eye. GUN believes they have an external hacker, but I think you will find that they do not.

"There is no further information for you, now. Conduct this investigation and from time to time I will contact you with a special care package such as the one on your doorstep this very minute, as well as more clues that will lead you in the case.

"If you are discovered, if you fail, or if you do not accept my offer, I must say the final result will be found most... unsavory... by us all." With a faint click, he was gone.

Sure enough, on their doorstep was a parcel. Inside were gift certificates to various upscale and smaller restaurants in town (enough to last even the Chaotix at least two weeks), as well as notices that their recent outstanding debts in this region had been paid. There was an envelope with enough money to buy household essentials, some cab fare (in the event they needed a pay-cab), and perhaps things like groceries or camera film to conduct their job properly. Paid handsomely, indeed. Whoever the strange voice on the other line was, he appeared to be both very rich and very serious.

Glad that the bee had been silenced by his other teammate, Espio would begin to listen. As instructed, the reptilian would hold his tongue, and allow their perspective hirer room to fully explain the situation. When the phone call ended, the phone would be hung up and as Espio headed to the door, he would speak. "We have a job offer."

Moments after saying this, the chameleon would open the door to the outside part of the boat and indeed find the package that had been spoke of. His eyes would scan it a moment before making the choice to pick it up from the ground and carry it in. "He, or someone hired by him, seems to have left this package. He claimed that if we took this case, he would send these packages now and then to remain in contact with us."

Once sitting down the box on a chair in the room, he would remove one kunai which he kept hidden on him at all times kept the small pocket on the part of his glove on his wrist. "He didn't give a name, but claims that GUN has a mole within it's ranks. The job is fairly simple. Find solid evidence and see that it's put into the hands of the public. But if what he said was true, then he is right to believe that without intervention or if we fail after trying to solve this case, the end will be rather unpleasant."

As he stated all the facts he'd been given, the blade would be used to cut open the box so the contents could be looked over. After returning the blade to his glove, Espio began to inspect what was in it as he finished speaking. Once eying just a single thing in the box, the invoices of payment, his gaze would turn toward Vector. "He said we'd be paid handsomely. And it seems he wasn't lying. Vector, take a look at these." After staying this, he would hold the documents out.

Fortunately for them, Vector's hand successfully blocked Charmy from both his excitable flight and eager questions. Reduced to wild flailing for the extent of the time it took for Espio to receive the information from their caller, he at last managed to move around Vector's efforts to impede him as Espio replaced the phone on its receiver.

"It's a case, right?! We should start right away! I can go look for information and find leads and- Where's Espio going?" He looked after Espio, hovering near Vector and staring after him until he brought the parcel inside. Interested as he filled them in on the details, but more so as to what they had been given, he dropped onto the edge of the chair beside the parcel and peered at the contents as soon as Espio had opened it. "Wow, that's a lot..." Joining in with the other two, Charmy dug through the envelopes to draw out one of the certificates and look it over. "We haven't even done anything yet!"

Charmy turned himself to perch on the side of the chair, looking to the other two and swinging his legs, gift certificate still in hand. "If we get all this stuff, we can't disappoint whoever sent it. Let's start on the job today! We're going to, aren't we?"

((I'm assuming Vector simply took the papers and looked them over. Rune, if you want to create a post to fit here at some later point, I don't mind editing my post and sticking it in place of this to keep things properly ordered.))

Once Vector took the papers offered out to him, Espio would continue to sort though the box as Charmy joined him. "I believe this was sent primary as proof that he meant as he claimed. Also, however, with these type of funds, we'll be able to function better and therefore have a better chance of solving the case." From this, it sounded like Espio seemed to be on board for the case. Now it was up to Vector if he had any arguments against it. With how badly they were hurting for work, that didn't seem likely.

Once saying this, he would now pluck the largest envelope from the box and open it so he could see it's contents. After finding that it was money, the chameleon would go about the task of counting up the funds. This would be more then enough to give their equipment a bit of long overdue care; not to mention buy film, CD-4, bleach, and fixer that were all needed to develop pictures.

A shopping run for both that and other stock for the house was in order soon. But not this moment. "There's money enough here for food and equipment supplies." He would turn his gaze toward the makeshift table where the noodles had been sat. "But lets eat before we make a trip to the market." Once stating this, the lizard began to return things to the box so they were kept save.

"Alright!" Charmy exclaimed, interpreting Espio's words as an acceptance of the work offer. "But you still didn't say! We're going to get on the case soon, aren't we? When are we starting?" Enthusiasm barely allowing him to be quiet long enough to listen for a response, he let go of the gift certificate and took to the air to hover at the chameleon's shoulder, attention instantly preoccupied with the amount of money he was counting. "That's enough to last us months!" An overstatement, but Charmy was optimistic. "Vector can buy real chicken for the instant noodles next time!"

Speaking of their dinner, Espio didn't have to remind him that it was there before he was already returning to it, leaving him to replace the envelopes in the parcel and pick up the certificate from where it now lay beside the chair. Charmy took up his own fork, at the same time looking toward Vector's utencil and untouched noodles on the floor, in the same place he dropped it. He then glanced to the crocodile himself. "Sorry I dropped your fork, Vector," he said, the words accompanied by an innocent grin.

Vectors eyes were wide, but the croc was mysteriously and unusually silent, especially as the amount of money was revealed. He peered at it a moment, and then at the other documents, before letting out a low whistle.

"Boys... we have got ourselves a case!" He said, thrusting a fist into his palm with a kind of fiery determination that usually accompanied.

"The case is extremely dangerous... but we have a policy here that we don't say no to so much cash upfront!" He added, folding his arms. Time to distribute missions.

"Espio, we will need to spend some of this on making sure our cameras are up to snuff, and make sure the rest of the business is well stocked. Charmy, you and me have a far more important mission..." he said , throwing his arm around the bee's shoulders... though it might have been a headlock. "Its a matter of life or death! And the choices we make will have repercussions for weeks to come... we need to go... food shopping!!"

Espio would nod in agreement to what Vector was saying. It seemed they were all for taking the case. But, it seemed as the crocodile didn't hear his suggestion the first time so he decided to repeat himself toward the end of his response.

"I'll do a full check on our equipment to see what needs to be replaced, repaired, or restocked. I'll also buy some black out cloth to set up a temporary black room, along with anything else we'll need to fully process what information comes up for this case."

Now would be a momentary pause as Espio motion toward the noodles on the makeshift table as Espio repeated his suggestion as planned. "But, I don't think we should let this food we have now go to waste; it would likely be a good idea to eat before jumping into work."

[ Oops. Wrong account. If Metal can do it, I can too. >D ]

Slurping up more noodles off his fork, Charmy's eyes shifted between Espio and Vector as they each went over their plans. Nothing sounded quite as fun as he had hoped for a beginning to the case, but maybe the details would be more promising on elaboration. However, even through his own enthusiasm over what was ahead, he was sure Vector was being a little over the top about it. As usual.

The bee gave a whine of complaint as Vector wrapped his arm around him, wings fluttering as he squirmed, vexed that he now was unable to reach his noodles to his mouth. He ceased the struggling to extract himself from Vector's hold when he began to address their mission, interest growing again, up until he stated the mission itself. "Food shopping?" The bee's antennae drooped. "That's it?" Dissatisfied with the assignment, he added, "Espio's mission is better, what's so life or death about food shopping?"
