This is Rufus Wainwright singing. It's closer to the abc and Cohens.

I have a feeling this will go on our Favorites list, just based on how the player translates it!

For versions--man. I like both Jeff Buckley's version, and the kd lang version as well. So many interpretations!

Yeah, there are a lot to choose from and they are all good. Tribute to the quality of the song itself.

I read an interesting article about the song, which suggested a few reasons why it might be so popular these days.

I took the liberty of putting together lyrics for this.
I took Randolfr's idea of replacing the name "David" with "Daeron" in the first verse, and re-wrote the second verse to be the story of his lust for Luthien, rather than the odd combination of David & Bathsheba/Samson & Delilah in the original.

Lyrics:

[intro]

I've heard there was a secret chord
That Daeron played, and it pleased his lord
But you don't really care for music, do ya?
Well, it goes like this: the fourth, the fifth,
the minor fall, the major lift,
The baffled bard composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Your gift was strong, your goals were good
You saw her dancing in the wood
Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew ya
She gave her love to one mortal born
You betrayed her trust, your heart was torn
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Well baby, I've been here before.
I know this room, I've walked this floor.
I used to live alone before I knew ya.
I've seen your flag on the marble arch,
Love is not a victory march.
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

There was a time you let me know
What's really goin' on below,
But now, you never show it to me, do ya?
And remember when I moved in you,
And Arda itself was moving too,
And every single breath we drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Maybe Eru really is above,
But all I've ever learned from love
Is how to shoot at someone who outdrew ya.
And it's not a cry that you hear at night,
it's not somebody who's seen the light
No, it's a cold and it's lonely Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
