Form the Atrophy prop department: They would like to tell all the costume makers about the new consumer level UV Cured Nail Polishes. If you are not familiar with these do a quick search. Almost every brand now offers some version of this type of polish. It works by staying liquid longer to properly flow or settle before it is set in place or cured with a UV light. The beauty of this product is your ability to layer it, its dry time and its hardness (automotive paint toughness). The colors are also amazing! With some practice you could recreate the color shift on a scarab shell. My Salon friends who have had access to this product for a few years now let me in on their tips & tricks for using the polish. So I thought I would pass them on to expand our communities’ knowledge. 1- Apply the polish evenly then gently roll or rotate the item painted to evenly flow the polish. 2- UV cure the polish for the recommended time. This sets it in place but it may still be tacky. 3- Wipe with IPA (isopropyl alcohol) and let it fully evaporate. This will remove the tackiness and finish harden the polish. Repeat all three steps for subsequent layers. I can not think of a better paint or process for detailing small items. Hopes this makes your costumes better.
