I know this is posted in panels, but I couldn't find a better place to stick it. Here's the idea: There will be eight volunteers at ShutoCon who are dedicated "Gym Leaders." Attendees can seek out and challenge these leaders at certain times of the day via Pokemon Black and White to collect badges. The leaders will have type-specific teams that they will adhere to when challenged. At some point at the convention, the people who have collected all eight badges will be either eligible for some kind of giveaway, or we could have a League Championship tournament. I would need people who volunteer for this to be ABSOLUTELY DEDICATED to the challenge. It would be unfair for challengers to miss out because a gym leader was missing in action.

I would like to set some rules; feel free to add your own suggestions, I want this to be awesome!

P.S. Yes! The Pokemon Panel will return this year, and I want to make it even better!

Want a nice set of badges to give away for the top winner?

I happen to make pokemon gym badge sets at my Artist's Alley booth :Pokemon Gym Badge Kanto Set.

(I'm hoping to vend at Shuto next year - as I'll have more of my own comics and things ready by then!)

While I may not be able to make the tons of badges needed for the individual gyms (maybe use shrinky dink prints or something like that), I'd certainly be willing to make a commemorative set for the top winner (like if you do a league championship tournament at the end). I'd love to help come up with a "Shuto League" badge set. :)

Great! That would be awesome to have a unique badge set! I hope we could use your designs for slightly more inexpensive badges to have made so the leaders can give them out individually. :P

No problem!

Should the event be a "go!" let me know, and I can work on badges for each Gym Leader "Theme".

I'll keep an eye on the board as things progress. After all, we DO have a year until the next one. :)

I think I just fangasamed.
Too bad I can't participate. TT_TT

Metius, I can understand using Pokemon Black and White for the battles. Would you consider Pokemone R/B/Y/FR/LG since they're in such an abundance in the Pokemon gaming world.

This is such a cool con-wide event though. I love it!

alright, i don't mean to be rude, but you should really read the OP of a thread if you're going to post in it.

That said, I think that this is a wonderful idea.
Do you have any idea if there will be a banlist of pokemon that cannot be used? I don't really want to end up going against and losing to Bidoof's with the Moody ability, just because they got +6 in evasion.

Wow this sounds awesome and I would love to help or if I cannot I would definitely hunt down the gym leaders. But I hope it would be ok to be an artist in the artist alley while doing this. Well if I get to be in the artist alley again :D .

Ok, here's the breakdown:

The way we have the system working (as of now) is a "hidden" gym leader idea, sort of like the scavenger hunts you see at other cons. After encountering each gym leader, participants will receive a clue leading to the next leader, all the way up to the eighth leader. Each participant can challenge a leader once, and there will be a page in our con booklet for win/loss stamps. Players that beat at least 4 gym leaders will receive some kind of prize, and players that obtain all eight badges will advance to a League Championship, and the overall winner of that will get a custom ShutoCon badge set made by Karmada (potentially).

Now, as far as gym leaders are concerned, these battles will be 3 on 3 flat battles, no restricted Pokemon allowed. Each leader will represent a type, and I will be crafting teams based on those choices. However, if you really demand a certain Pokemon on your team, I won't fight you on it; just remember that these challenges should be tough, but winnable. Because we don't know how large this will be, we may have several people portraying the same gym leader with the same team to speed up the process.

This is the MOST IMPORTANT PART. If you say you would like to be a gym leader, this is a SERIOUS COMMITMENT. It's pretty horrible to figure out a clue only to have no gym leader there to battle. As the year goes on, we will shape this challenge more and work out a lot of the logistics. As always, I will keep an eye on this topic and take in any feedback people give.

edit: Many people have been asking why we are doing Black/White instead of Heartgold/Soulsilver/Firered/Leafgreen/etc. These are the newest games, with the largest Pokemon roster, with the most refined battle system. You also need to realize that the con is still a year away, so think of the popularity of Black/White at that point in time.

I'm really wary of dragon-types, due to them being powerhouses. We'll hold off on that for now, and we'll do some practice runs down the road to see how tough the dragon gym would be.

damn i wish i could help out, i would love to be the water gym leader, im actually playing through white right now, only using water type pokemon. the fourth gym was not easy! i doubt i could make it out there considering im in cali, and on top of that, im in school then, and i doubt i could make it, but hopefully i can still contribute

i noticed that u said that there would be some restrictions on what pokemon you can use, im assuming you were referring to ubers. such as: wobbafett, garchomp, raquaza, groudon, etc.

i agree with that logic but i also think that it should be slightly different, i would recomend making it so that u cant use legendary pokemon, but then wobbafett, wynaught, and garchomp are allowed

I would be interested in applying...I'm a grass/dark Pokemon user.

I think though you need to instill level caps and also prohibit cheated EV stats. i say this because I was bested awhile back by someone who cheated to max their ev stats.

Also prohibit using limited legendary Pokemon or ones that haven't been legally released yet in the US.

Also I believe the outfits need to prerecorded by perhaps taking a photo with the ds of their outfit that day a unique item for distinguishment.

Oh man this sounds sweet!

I just got around to beating the Multiplayer missions on PKMN Ranger Guardian Signs while I was at NMA Con this past weekend - FINALLY got my Deoxys and finished off my Living 5th Gen. National Pokedex.

I'd love to be a part of this, but I usually go to Cons with a pretty large cosplay group and we usually roam on a pretty strict schedule: What were you thinking of as far as time commitment? If this doesn't eat into any big events, I'd totally be down for filling a slot.

Ok so we're beginning to wind down on this, and I'm slowly finalizing my leaders. What I want is an update of people committed to be a gym leader. If you've already spoken to me in person, please give me a reminder of who you are and what type you want. If we haven't met in person, and you still want to be a leader, please pm me your contact information, along with your preferred type.

I like this idea. I just got a copy of Pokemon Black and plan to compete. I completely agree with banning Legendaries. Mewtwo alone is a primary example. I don't agree with banning dragon types. Any fast pokemon with a good ice type move would drop one in a round or two tops. They're also week vs their own type.

If you're planning on doing the multiple gym leaders to save on time, I wouldn't mind being a gym leader. I can work with whatever you need. I can make decent teams out of most types. Especially now since there's a really good selection.

Hi,

I've sent PMs a couple of times as requested and haven't heard anything back, so I figured I'd post here. I'm still interested in being a gym leader and would love to be contacted in regards to participating, if there are still slots left to fill.

My email is Tatiora@gmail.com or my AIM name is Tatiora. I also check the PMs on this board.

Ok, small update post. First of all, I apologize for not replying sooner with the PMs, but I am in the works of finalizing my last Gym Leaders. There are currently 6 leaders who are on for sure, and I have ideas for the last two. I expect to finalize it this week, and once I can collect the e-mails of everyone involved, I will create a private mailing list with more details. IF, however, you are not chosen to be a gym leader, we may still need your help. Since this is the first year this competition will be run, we have no way of knowing how many people will participate. If possible, we may have people with duplicate teams working in the same area, in case lines for battles become too long. Please stay tuned for details.

Ok, this is the big post that you all have been waiting for; the full list of rules and entries for the Pokemon League Challenge.

First, the format:
Trainers will organize a team of three (3) Pokemon of their choosing from Pokemon Black and White. Legendaries will be disallowed (Mewtwo, Arceus, etc.), however, all other Pokemon (Garchomp, Tyranitar, etc.) are allowed. The eight leaders will be scattered throughout the convention hall and hotel, and will be available to challenge at certain times on Saturday ONLY. The battles will be 3-on-3 Flat Battles, meaning all Pokemon will be flattened to lvl 50, for a balanced challenge. Your convention booklet will contain a location for leader "stamps" to indicate the leaders you have already faced. The competition will run on a win/loss basis, meaning each leader can be challenged ONCE, and trainers will get either a win or a loss mark in their booklet. The leaders can be challenged in any order, except for the eighth leader, in which you are required to have battled all seven (7) of the other Gym Leaders.

Trainers who earn four (4) or more wins will receive a minor prize (yet undecided), and trainers that conquer all eight leaders will advance to the Shuto League, where they will compete in a tournament style bracket, with the grand prize being a custom made Shuto League badge set made by Karmada (Karmada, we obviously need to still discuss details with you). Some of these conditions are subject to change, since this is the first year of this competition and we do not exactly know what to expect, but there will be a presentation during opening ceremonies with the rules.

Next the rules:
1. Each of the eight leaders may be challenged only ONCE.
2. The eighth Gym Leader may only be challenged after battling all seven other leaders.
3. If you see that there is a queue for battling a Gym Leader, please be patient and wait for your turn.
4. Roleplaying is fine and even encouraged, however be mindful of people waiting to challenge Leaders and manage your time effectively.
5. If a Gym Leader asks you to do something within reason, please do so.
6. Please do not disclose details about the leaders' teams to other trainers. You wouldn't want to give the edge to your competition. :)
7. Be respectful of your fellow trainers and Gym Leaders; if you lose a battle, keep your pride and move on to the next challenge.
8. Disconnects during battles will be counted as a loss for the trainer, pending some exceptions at the discretion of the Gym Leader.
9. Don't forget to charge your game system! The last thing you want is to die out during a close match!

I have already contacted all of my Gym Leaders, so if you haven't heard from me, don't fret! We will still need backup leaders in case of emergency or certain time constraints, so be sure when you volunteer, make it be known that you are able to participate as a Leader!

1. The game's flat battle system will automatically bring your Pokemon's level to 50, whether it's above or below.

2. We would like you to keep the same Pokemon team, but since we have no way to enforce this, we won't be.

Once you get to a certain point in Black/White, you gain access to many old-generation pokemon. So far as I understand, we are not restricted to simply Black/White version pokemon - we are simply restricted to using those two versions of the game to connect and to battle. Please correct me if I'm wrong, moderators!

According to the Ultimate Pokemon Handbook, Zoroark is not but Rotom is. In Black vs White, Rotom is NOT a legendary, though the music played when battling is the legendary music. There is a lot of debate over Rotom.
