Read a news story today that I felt was relevant. For 75 years after Hachiko's death, it was a popular rumour that he had eventually died due to damaging his stomach from eating the yakitori offered to him by street vendors -- fuelling the sceptical belief that Hachiko continued to return to Shibuya Station for the food, not out of loyalty to his master. However, Hachiko's preserved remains were recently re-examined, and it was found out that he was very ill when he died: Hachi had worms, lung cancer, and heart cancer. He must have been in a lot of pain for a long time, so hopefully continuing to return to Shibuya Station every day to wait for his master in that state will only add to the tale of his heroic loyalty. (Unfortunately their investigation did nothing to dissuade the sceptical argument: while Hachiko's stomach was fine, it was full of yakitori when he died. Take that how you will.) |
