Katana A katana is a type of Japanese sword, and is often called a "samurai sword." The term katana may be applied to the standard size moderately curved [as opposed to the older "tachi" style featuring more curvature] Japanese sword with a blade length of greater than 60 cm (23.6 inches). The term is sometimes incorrectly used as a generic name for any kind of Japanese sword. The katana is characterized by its distinctive appearance: a curved, slender, single edged blade, circular or squared guard, and long grip to accommodate two hands. It has historically been associated with the samurai of feudal Japan, and has become renowned for its sharpness and cutting ability, to the point that its purported cutting capabilities have reached mythical status. Wakizashi The wakizashi (meaning "side arm") is a traditional Japanese sword with a shōtō blade between 30 and 60 cm (12 and 24 inches), with an average of 50 cm (20 inches). It is similar to but shorter than a katana, and usually shorter than the kodachi ("small sword"). The wakizashi was usually worn together with the katana by the samurai or swordsmen of feudal Japan. When worn together the pair of swords were called daishō, which translates literally as "large and small". The katana was often called the sword or the long sword and the wakizashi the companion sword. Tanto A tantō is a common Japanese single or, occasionally, double edged knife or dagger with a blade length between 15 and 30 cm (6-12 inches). The tantō was designed primarily as a stabbing weapon, but the edge can be used for slashing as well. Tantō first began to appear in the Heian period, however these blades lacked any artistic quality and were purely weapons. In the early Kamakura period high-quality artistic tantō began to appear, and the famous Yoshimitsu (the greatest tantō maker in Japanese history) began his forging. Tantō production increased greatly around the Muromachi period and then declined in the Shintō period ("new sword" period). These are a common Shinobi weapon and are often carried by ANBU. Usually it also had a sword-like guard (tsuba) between the blade and shaft. Spear A spear is a pole weapon consisting of a shaft, usually of wood, with a sharpened head. The head may be simply the sharpened end of the shaft itself, as is the case with bamboo spears, or it may be of another material fastened to the shaft, such as obsidian, iron or bronze. The most common design is of a metal spearhead, shaped like a triangle or a leaf. Halberd A halberd (also called halbert or Swiss voulge) is a two-handed pole weapon that came to prominent use during the 14th and 15th centuries. Possibly the word halberd comes from the German words Halm (staff), and Barte (axe). The halberd consists of an axe blade topped with a spike mounted on a long shaft. It always has a hook or thorn on the back side of the axe blade for grappling mounted combatants. It is very similar to certain forms of the voulge in design and usage. The halberd was 1.5 to 1.8 meters (4 to 6 feet) long. Bow A bow is a weapon that projects arrows powered by the elasticity of the bow. Essentially, it is a form of spring. As the bow is drawn, energy is stored in the limbs of the bow and transformed into rapid motion when the string is released, with the string transferring this force to the arrow. Bows are used for hunting, sport (target shooting), or as weapons of war. Crossbow A crossbow is a weapon consisting of a bow mounted on a stock that shoots projectiles, often called bolts. The medieval crossbow was called by many names, most of which derived from the word Ballista, a siege engine resembling a crossbow in mechanism and appearance. Knuckle Knives These deadly knives belong to the Leaf Jounin Asuma. The combination of brass knuckles and knife prove a deadly weapon to any foe Asuma faces. Asuma can also extend his chakra through the metal of the blade and out the end using his Hien technique. This causes the blade to lengthen with an added chakra edge. This hidden danger can act as a surprise to enemies who misjudge the distance they will need to maneuver to avoid the deadly blades. Knuckle Bolt Gloves Knuckle Bolt Gloves are deadly gloves that has a single streak of metal or knuckle guards running across the fingers, these are then braced by large bolts of wood or metal to greatly increase the damage of punches. Giant Shriuken The Leaf Chuunin Mizuki utilized these giant shuriken after he convinced Naruto to steal the forbidden jutsu scroll. These large shuriken are hurled by the user at an opponent, their large size increasing the damage they inflict as they fly through the air. Giant Kunai Kunai that are almost as big as normal swords, they take on a more curved approach then their smaller versions and are more focused as swords rather then throwing weapons. Giant Fan Temari carries this large fan on her back. When needed, the fan can unfold and create a large cyclonic wind. Temari is able to imbue her chakra into the wind, which allows her to hold the victim as the wind slices them to pieces. Temari also utilizes her fan when she wishes to summon. She unfolds her fan, spreads her blood on the fan and with a quick swing her summon arrives in the air to carry out a slicing attack with the wind. WindMill Shriuken In its folded state, all four arms of the shuriken are folded together. When full unfolded the large shuriken can be thrown through the air causing great damage. Senbon The senbon was first used by doctors in acupuncture, it was then adopted by ninja and Hunter-nins to hit points on the body to cause death, deaden limbs or cause their target to fall unconscious. Scythe A scythe consists of a long (about 170 cm or 5' 6") wooden shaft called a snaith, snath, snathe or sned (modern versions are sometimes made from metal or plastic). The snaith may be straight, or with an "S" curve, but the more sophisticated versions are curved in three dimensions, allowing the user to stand more upright. The snaith has either one or two short handles at right angles to it – usually one near the upper end and always another roughly in the middle. A long, curved blade (roughly 60-90 cm, approx. 24"-36") is mounted at the lower end, perpendicular to the snaith. Scythes always have the blade projecting from the left side of the snaith when in use, with the edge towards the user. Kama Kama are Okinawan and Japanese traditional farming implements similar to a sickle used for reaping crops and also employed as a weapon. Before being used in martial arts, the kama was widely used throughout Asia to cut crops, mostly rice. It is commonly used in martial arts from Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines where it is found in many forms. The kama has also been used in Chinese martial arts but not often. From one or both of these areas the kama was brought to Okinawa and incorporated into the martial art Te (hand) and later Karate (empty hand). Wrist Blades Wrist Blades are single blads that can be attached to wrist bands or gauntlets and then used with full arm swings, it is also possible to create rectrable versions of these weapons. Exploding Tag The exploding tag is a piece of parchment paper which has script on it that serves to faciltate its explosive properties. The ninja can attach the tag to another object such as a kunai or log. When the tag is set it begins a slow burn which results in a large explosion. Exploding Pouch A variation on the exploding tag, these small pouches can be attached to a target and then explode a few seconds later. Puppets The art of using puppets in battle was developed in the Hidden Sand Village. Over time these skills were passed on to new ninja. The earliest known puppet master was Chikamatsu Monzaemon. The oldest living master was Chiyo, her grandson Sasori would pick up where she left off and take the art to new heights. When Sasori fled the village, Kankurou would use Sasori's puppets as his own and become renowned in his own right.
