Well what i think they should do is make it optional who follows you around (ie. any pokemon in your party) and even have a option to simply opt out of the following thing. Of course limitations could be input. I don't know who would want a kyogre following them around.

I'm thinking Nintendo will just do the same thing they did with Yellow; when your starter evolves, it won't follow you around. Most third evolutions are larger than the trainer.

Lots of new stuff has been announced for HG/SS:

Many III and IV Generation Pokémon will be available
After the Elite Four, Kyogre and Groundon will be available in HG and SS respectively (1 per version). However, if one is traded to the other, the game containing both will unlock a feature allowing Rayquaza to be catchable.
Cynthia and Arceus are found in an unknown area atm

more to come...

Even though it will follow closely on the basics of Pokémon Gold & Silver, there are a variety of new features brought into these remakes. Firstly, all the game mechanics are brought up to the 4th generation standards. Second, one of the major new features is that you can have any Pokémon follow you in the games. This way, you can truely personalise your experience.

In addition to the areas previously in Johto, there are new areas to be found within Johto. In addition to that, there are non-Johto Pokémon to be found in it including Kyogre in Heart Gold, Groudon in Soul Silver, Rayquaza, Dialga, Palkia & Giratina.

Heart Gold & Soul Silver is also packaged with a new peripheral; PokéWalker, which will allow you to transfer a Pokémon to it to train it up as you walk around your normal life.

More info is expected to come soon so be sure to check back here often.

I must say, it's looking very interesting indeed! Especially the pokewalker, check this out: Pokewalker

The Shokotan Pichu and Nintendo Zone Jirachi were released June 19 and are available until July 17 iirc in Japan. These 2 event Pokémon are said to cause events in HG/SS, so when they come to North America it would be wise to pick them up, whether they are ToysRus or Wi-Fi or a different location.

I hope they're through Wi-Fi; those make the most sense to me.

It is most likely that the NZ Jirachi will be a Wi-Fi download as it was in Japan.
The official website has a page on Arceus, meaning that sometime in the future Arceus will be for distribution! We would all hope for it to be online; however, it will most likely be at ToysRUs locations across North America.
Lastly from August 3 - September 13 the Member's Card will be available for distribution for Pokémon Platinum on Wi-Fi for North America & Europe! This special key item allows you to access the locked house in Canalave City, and from there you can encounter Darkrai at New Moon Island! It is at level 50. A second run may come at the end of the year, and hopefully Oak's Letter will come to North America and the rest of the world, as well as the Azure Flute, which has yet to be seen ANYWHERE worldwide!

While some of these legendary distributions are cool, I think they should just "give" you the pokemon in the game AFTER first giving us players all of those event items (Member's Card, Oak's Letter, etc.) I do know the Member's Card has been released, but I keep hearing about Shaymin, Darkrai, and Arceus getting released at their movies and stores... While most enjoy the benefits of those, I want to do the in-game events to get those legendary pokemon. I'm also kinda upset that Japan is getting all of the attention right now; there are SO many areas unlocked in Gold and Silver through some of these Wi-Fi events going on now, but they aren't available for US. I've seen the pattern of Nintendo, and we probably won't see that notched-ear Pichu in our games :(

I too prefer doing the ingame events rather than just receiving something online or trading or an event distribution, and right now it is true Japan is getting quite a bit. However, I am positive that in North America we will get:
Oak's Letter (Shaymin)
Azure Flute (Arceus)
PCP Pichu
Jirachi

The last 3 all have an effect in HG/SS, so they will come out closer to Spring 2010 (release of the remakes).

I think Shaymin will come October/November and Arceus in December/January.
