Student Template Version 2.31 Student Name: Toby Breen Gender: Male Age: 15 Race: Calidian Dorm Number: (Optional. You can request for a dorm at any time. Please check the Dorm List for open spots, and make sure to ask permission from another to be their room mate.) Physical Appearance: Toby is about five foot eight inches and weights one hundred and fifty pounds. He is still rather lean and his body is free of scars. His luminous green eyes seem almost dead at times even when he is laughing. On his forehead is what appears to be a sliver of obsidian. It is almost one inch long and almost a quarter inch wide. It also appears to have been forced into his forehead. Having no other cloths Toby only ever wears his school uniform. Personality: Toby is a somber young man who ants more mature then his age suggests he would. He is prone to episodes of bleak depression where he generally wishes to be left alone. Though some of the doctors advised against it he enjoys fencing as it lets him recapture a time in his life before the beast. When he is not depressed Toby can be enthusiastic and overly exuberant. Toby enjoys working with his hands and building things. The bleaker he becomes the more likely he will be found in a shop working. Toby finds when he is deeply involved in building something he can let everything but the project go. Toby's deepest desire is to crush the beast into servitude and make to so that when the time comes for him to pass on the Beast will simple fade away. Due to the burden placed on him he finds it hard to trust others. There are days when Toby is especially waspish due to getting random headaches from the crystal he is forced to bear. History: Toby was born in a small village of mages and sky pirates. One might ask where this village was or when what his date of birth is but those questions will be answered eventually. Toby was born far from here both in time and distance. He was born in a country called Calidis which was a mostly human country. The primary export of the country was the engine that made the sky ships fly. As a result the country kept a retainer of pirates to combat both hostile pirates and enemy nations. When Toby was old enough to walk he was treated to his first time on deck of a sky ship. Though this one was in for repairs and thus not airborne it was still his first time on deck. When Toby turned five he was tested and showed aptitude for magic. This would mean the young boy was subject to long hours of study. It would also be two years before he was trained in the arts that allow a person to enter into a contract with the soul of the fallen. It was about the time Toby had finished learning the art when tragedy struck. Toby was watching with the rest of the village as one of their ships was coming home from a routine patrol. Before the ship could begin to dock seven vessels from an enemy nation descended from the clouds to surround the vessel. There was very little fighting after harpoons anchored the ship in place. Toby did not personally see what happened afterwords but was told about it later. The prisoners were bound then were thrown over the rail to drop fifteen thousand feet to their deaths. Toby's father took him to the world of spirits shortly after this. The first contract Toby singed was with his own sister. Though Toby was sad that his sister had been killed he was glad that she had been willing to help him learn his first spell. During the next three years Toby learned as much as he could both about magic and engineering. Though everyone found it amusing nobody could foresee where this would end. Though at the request of his father Toby was not taught the arts of the technomagus. This would be his life for another three years until he turned ten and got to be the cabin boy of his first sky ship. Toby kept careful logs of the voyages as well as both successful and failed experiments he and the ship engineer ran. Though the ships engineer was only a year older then him she was considered to be the best in her field. Putting her and Toby together was simply a disaster waiting to happen. This being said they served together on five different vessels. Now you might as what happened to the other four vessels. Well lets just call them creative flops and leave it at that. However on the fifth ship they served together on they had been tinkering with one of the guns from the main battery. The ship came under sudden attack and Toby being the closest to the guns was ordered to fire a warning shot. Toby did not think the eleven enemy ships would care much for the warning but he went to the cannon he had helped tinker with. Now no one was exactly sure what combination Toby and Erika his engineer friend used on the cannon but it worked and then some. The ship was hurled sideways by the blast and more luck then skill allowed it to recover before hitting anything. The warning shot took out nine of the eleven ships which made the other two flee the area rather quickly. The captain ordered a course set for home and Toby and Erika to his office. Toby had seen the Captain drink in port before but the Captain also never drank in the sky. That said the captain was pouring himself a drink when the pair entered. Five hours later they left the office certain they were being grounded when they got to port. When they got home reports had begun to filter into the town of an event that had left the capitol of an enemy nation in ruins. A black cloud had descended on the city and reports from the few survivors were that there had been what looked like a man in the cloud. All sky ships had been ordered to remain in dock until further notice. For two years reports filtered in about how the cloud was expanding and everything it enveloped was obliterated. When Toby was just turning twelve the shadowy cloud reached his village. They could see what looked like an enormous man in the cloud. The man revealed himself as a destroyer of worlds. Toby's father warned everyone that the creature before them was devouring the very life of the planet and if it was to be saved drastic measures had to be taken. Toby along with every other soul bind quickly forged to largest channeling circle in the history of the art. The beast quickly entered the circle unconcerned of what would happen. Toby's father activated t he circle to trap the beast. The world slayer merely laugh and began to finish what it had started. Toby was one of the first to begin chanting along with his father. Toby found it strange he was unafraid of the world slayer as it was before him. Perhaps the knowledge of certain death helped him remain focused on his spell. Despite their best efforts the beast was still able to strike them and a dozen had been slain since the chat began. Then Toby heard something he did not expect the canon he and Erika had rigged went off. However this time the ship was firmly tethered and the canon shattered the ship. The Beast reeled from the blow and A small black crystal formed in front of it. Toby's father dashed forward and grabbed the crystal and slammed a bubble around it Toby knew his father was sealing the beast in the crystal. Toby made for the wreckage. He found the Captain first mate and Erika in the wreckage. The first mate missing his head was obviously gone. Toby could tell with a glance Erika and the Captain would not last much longer. So he knelt beside Erika and held her hand. She opened her eyes and she knew it as well. They talked for a few short minutes not about her being ok as lying was pointless. Rather they spoke excitedly about the blast itself. Toby held her for several minutes after she fell silent crying. His father shouted for him to hurry he was needed at the gate. Toby laid his friend down into the pool of her blood and ran to join his father. When he got to the gate his father gave him a long look. “I am sorry son our best efforts were to little to late. This world is going to die soon regardless of what we just did. All we have done is give other worlds a chance to live free of fear. There is something I must ask you and it will be very dangerous and possibly kill you. I don't however see a choice as the beast would be freed by the death of the world unless my gamble pays off.” Toby smiled at his father and wiped the blood from his hands. “I will take the crystal to where ever you want me to father then I will return and wait out the last days with you.” Toby's father turned his back on his son for a moment. “I am glad son but you wont be coming back I am going to seal you in the spirit world after sealing the crystal with your body. I don't know if you will ever find a way out or not but this will become your burden so other worlds may live.” Toby's father swiftly and the crystal slammed into Toby's forehead hurling him into the swirling void. How long Toby wondered in the spirit world he could not say time worked different. Was he there for minutes, hours, days, weeks or years he could not say. Walking about he noted a glow beneath his feet. Toby blinked as the light became rather intense. Then he was falling and crashed into the ground. It took time for him to begin to understand what people were saying. Even when he could understand people it took longer for him to wrap his mind about what had happened. All he could gather was he was still alive and the beast was bound to him the crystal fused to his skull. After three years in the institute Toby was released to the twin Campus. He was not thrilled about being around others his own age as he wore past like a weight dragging down his will. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ((This section is for you to fill out, but the staff will post it up under your approved profile. This way, you can access your appearance, personality, and etc to update at your will, and we can make sure that new powers don't appear without approval. This also means less work for you, since it becomes our responsibility to add in the credits you earn for SLs.)) School: Azure Year: First Year Designation/Primary Magic Principle: Soul binder: Toby is able to use an art to bind a soul into a charm that he wears. He is able to tap into these souls to use a spell bound into the charm with the soul. These souls are bound from willing spirits that are found in the after life. Toby's Magic runs off Mana and his pool is fifty. ((Please note in the below sections you are permitted 3 weak powers or abilities total to start.)) Magic Spells/Special Abilities: soul bind Description: Using the arts he had been trained in Toby is able to make a crystal charm out of a soul. When creating the charm the soul and Toby enter into a magical contract where the soul is imprinted with a spell. Toby is able to call up these spells while wearing the charm. To bind a soul Toby must be in the spirit world and must since a blood contract with the soul. The process of binding requires Toby to scribe a series of glyphs and circles around the soul. Once done he must channel his latent magic into the soul for a time. During this time Toby is vulnerable and must be protected. Should the channeling fail Toby must wait two weeks before he may try again. Note: this is a story line power only reality shift Description: Toby is able to craft a circle that acts as a gate way. On the other side of the gate is the spirit world. The circle must be crafted on a horizontal surface and must be ten feet high and nine feet across. The circle must be protected while Toby and anyone with him is on the other side. If the circle is not protected dark souls and the dead may pass freely back into our world. The circle may only ever be open once per week. The circle must also be placed somewhere that it does not have to move. Note: this is a story line power only Wall walk soul key: older sister Aiya spell command: cigam psarg egagne description: Toby is able to cling to solid surfaces. Toby sends magical energy through his body that permits him to grip onto a surface magically. He is able to cling with both hands and feet to whatever surface he wishes. The restrictions to this are that it does not work on water or any magically slicked surface. This includes magical forms of ice. Once cast the spell lasts for twenty minutes. Toby is able to cast it up to four times per day. Toby can cast it multiple times in a row but the timer does not stack rather if Toby had been hanging for fifteen minutes and cast it a second time he would get another twenty not twenty five. The spell consumes ten mana per cast. Training: Fencing: Toby knows how to fence saber. Though if you wanted to be exact it is more like Toby learned how to fight with a cutlass. This most likely happened while serving on the deck of the airship he had worked on. Engineer: Toby had learned a number of things from the engineers of his home world. Jewel craft: Toby was taught about how to fit a crystal into a casing so that it could be worn. Inventory/Equipment: Charm bracelet: Toby wears a gold charm bracelet with a single light blue crystal on it. The significance of the charm is easy to overlook. Hi DBH, I'll be handling your application today. Before I can get very far, we'll have to deal with at least one issue that's sort of the elephant in the room in terms of this character. Toby is very blatantly a Final Fantasy 7 character, and Sephiroth/SHM clone besides. While using existing characters as a base is fine, Shadowside is not a fandom RPG and we cannot accept a character taken so directly from an existing work. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to ask for a rewrite so Toby is not so directly lifted from a setting which does not fit the Shadowside universe. Also, a couple notes on your powers. The PMP is far too broad; it's meant to be an umbrella term of sorts, but not so broad that it could apply to any kind of power. The rest of the powers seem rather overpowered and ill-defined, but I'd like to see your rewritten profile first before I go into specifics. |

Ok its going to take a few days/weeks to get it rewritten. Since to remove most of the reference from the profile means making it to confusing so I will just wipe him and start over. |

Okay. Appearance is kind of sparce. He's lean, with green eyes, and a weird scar/jewel/whatsit on his forehead. Try to expand on things like his body build and facial structures. Race should be magi, unless there's some kind of physiological difference between humans of Calidis and humans on Earth. Again, the PMP is far too broad. It's meant to be an umbrella term for a certain type of ability or spell, not every single thing your character could ever do. There is no specific type of power attached to soul binding as you've described it; the souls are a source of power, but there's no real limit on the type of power they could grant. As I said in my previous post, this needs to be narrowed to a set of powers or abilities with a fairly specific goal. Soul Bind - Are there any ill effects to a failed attempt at binding? Reality Shift - How does one protect the gate if they don't have powers that specifically affect spirits and the like? How long does the gate stay open? Can more than one gate be open at a time, and does its position in the physical world affect its location in the spirit world, or not? Spidermanning - There really needs to be more of a weakness to this other than not being able to walk on water and magically-slick surfaces. Fencing - This would count as a basic power, and as it is you've already got three. Engineering - Given that Toby comes from a world where airships and such are commonplace, this needs to be expanded on in terms of what he can and can't do with it and how good he is at it before I can decide if it counts as a power or not. |
