The dying rays of orange set the tone on the city district, blanketing the roads and bouncing off skyscrapers and lower office buildings. Soft soughs of the wind whispered through the narrow alleyways, running chills through spines not prepared for it. Walter stood at the heart of the Kaban District, beside a traffic light by the intersection. Tear was standing beside him, looking upwards as Walter was as well.
There was a particular building the two were looking at. The building itself was not particular at all but it was what was on top of it which drew their attention. Millions of tiny bulbs on a giant panel, yet only some lit in the centre, displaying the time. How peculiarly useful it was to have a giant clock for everyone to see. And, how useful it was too, for Walter and Tear who remained where they were with their eyes fixed to the clock.
The clock struck a new hour, the final hour for a lot of people in the Kaban District. Walter took his eyes off the clock and on the streets, Tear following suit. The both of them unusually, casually dressed; a disguise, as Walter put it.
"Here we go," Tear sighed, keeping her hands in her pockets.
An enormous black wave emerged from the doors of the buildings, from every exit, from every mysterious stairway. If one where to look from high, one might mistake this for black ants migrating. Now that it was evening, the streets too were filled with red hinder and bright fronts. Soon, it congested the road, following the guidance of coloured lights overhead. It was loud, it was chaotic, it was vivid, it was colourful, but above all, it was overwhelming. Dead eyes were all that about, passing Walter and Tear. There was so much noise, yet not one word was uttered, and not one honk was horned. There was so much colour, yet the only colour was grey, red, yellow, and black. This was the Kaban District everyday when work was over.
It was an intriguing sight, to look upon people who simply turned their brain... off. Walter stayed where he stood, this was what he wanted to do for the evening: observe.
People glancing at him once before returning back to their own heads, walking without looking, looking without seeing. Disgusted and disdained glares were also occasionally shot at Walter. Who is this boy with so much free time? Why is he just standing around? These foreign folks coming here, so much luckier than us. Floating thoughts, like their faces, like the clouds, passing by.
To those who could see what Walter was seeing, it would be startling, but more than that, it would be sad.
