God-Emperor of all Belugas
|
Some of the two most superstitious brands of people were athletes and sailors. God help you if you were both of them, as Benjamin McTavish was so inclined to turn out to be. No thick, dark beard could hide that man’s disapproving scowl, and no protruded forehead could shade his unhappy glare towards Eustace Miller as the unassuming boy approached the boarding plank of the HMS Endeavour. ”Boy, what are you wearing?” Captain McTavish growled. Eustace froze in place, turning his attention to the captain. The boy was wearing his father’s old peacoat, the Admiral’s insignia still patched into it. At a loss for words, Eustace assumed that perhaps the man figured Eustace was trying to ‘outrank’ him. In response, Eustace figured a hasty salute would placate the captain. ”Stop that, you idiot. I asked you a question.” ”I-it’s my father’s old coat.” McTavish narrowed his already hidden eyes, a snarl creeping up behind his beard. He stomped towards Eustace, walking halfway down the plank to size the kid up. The Captain himself was an imposingly large man, though only about six feet flat he had the bulk of a whale and the toothy snarl of a Great White. ”And where is your dad, son?” ”He…he’s gone.” Eustace averted his eyes, wiping his forehead for sweat. ”And what, pray tell, are you doing wearing his coat?” Eustace looked back at McTavish, confused. He didn’t quite grasp why this man cared so much about stinky old piece of clothing. Was he just jealous of the rank? They didn’t even serve the same country, what would he care about that? Besides, Endeavour was a research vessel. There was hardly any reason to care about taking control of it. …And what was a man like this doing on a science vessel anyway? He looked more suited to scaring off pirates in the 18th Century. ”For sentimental value, sir. He reminds me to stay brave.” ”Oh, brave you say? I certainly hope you are brave, when your insolent defilement of the dead ends with half my crew killed! Bloody Hell, don’t you know anything about superstitions? You don’t wear a dead sailor’s clothing!” Eustace’s eyes widened, his voice quivering. And yet, he still chose to defy the barking Scotsman, ”It’s j-just superstition…it’s not real…” ”Oh, just superstition you say? It’s not real you say? Oh, excuse me while I proceed with a life of strict scepticism and reason while I stand here at port and an waiting for five supernatural children to come aboard in order to chase down the shipwreck of a fictional vessel.” Captain McTavish threw his arms up, too annoyed to continue badgering Eustace. ”Fine. Bring the stupid thing on board.” With that, Eustace gulped, and quietly made his way onto the ship. Unfortunately, he did not take much more than a single step before the already enraged Benjamin thrust a hand right against Eustace’s chest and pushed him right near overboard. ”NOT WITH THE LEFT FOOT YOU IMBECILE!” ”It’s j-j-just supersti-“ ”SHUT UP!” Deciding against the sea’s tempting offer of homicide, McTavish begrudgingly let go of Eustace and rubbed his hand on his face. It seemed the captain genuinely thought they were all going to die. This is what happened when one let idiots travel with you. Son of a sailor or not, Eustace was clearly more of a danger to the ship than help. But he had money. That was about all that kept the Captain from launching him off the ship. He had the money to give him another go at sea. ”Where are the others?” ”They should be here soon.” ”I hope so. Are any of them-“ McTavish was interrupted by a rat, scurrying on deck. Eustace jumped and freaked out, whimpering at the sight of the rodent, while McTavish watched it carefully. After a minute, the creature scrambled onto the plank and left the ship. The Captain turned to Eustace, frowning at the boy’s clear ignorance of the bad omen. ”You know what that means? It means we’re doomed. Dead, condemned. Don’t think I don’t blame you.” ”I…I think you’re taking this a little too poorly.” ”Sock it, you runt.” Edited by Falque, Feb 2 2012, 10:58 PM.

Evy was going on an ADVENTURE. She didn’t really know any of the details or anything like that except that Eustace had told her to come meet him at the ship and that they were going away for the weekend, and she was sooooo excited. In that moment it was really hard to imagine ever being or ever having been more excited about anything in her entire life. Eustace was awesome. Adventures were awesome. Oh yeah. Evy totally knew that they were going to be on a boat! She wasn’t sure what one was supposed to wear on a boat or anything like that, but she was really excited anyway. Boats sounded fun! The only problem was that she was supposed to be at soccer practice all weekend. Evy had talked to her coach for a million hours and she had explained super well that it was an adventure and she really wanted to go and her friend had asked her and they didn’t have a game and she never ever missed practice, never, but she really wanted to go. Coach had said it was okay, but Evy had had to do extra practice the whole week before she left. Evy hadn’t had very much time to get ready after soccer practice and before they were supposed to meet. She’d picked out clothing but she forgot what it was so after her shower she just threw on the first thing she could find, little blue soccer shorts and a white t-shirt with a soccer ball across the chest, stuck her hair in a ponytail, laced up her ATRFs, scooped up her bag of holding, kissed Sevens good-bye, and took off across the campus. Evy ran faster than she thought she would, and charged up to the plank excitedly, skidding to a stop. “Eustace! Eustace!” She jumped up and down, waving at him eagerly, and charged up the plank, stopping and staring at the boat. “Wow…” she said, excitedly, turning to Eusace with a big smile. “This is so cool! I’m so excited!” She tackled him with a hug, giggling excitedly, and turned to the Captain. “HI! I’m Evy! Nice to meet you!” She extended a hand to him, waiting happily for his response. |

One would most likely assume that Embody was not the adventurous sort, and they'd assume correctly. Eustace literally begged her to come with him on the adventure, having seemingly filled the criteria and his needs - one, she could swim adequately enough, and two, she was the preferred gender of choice. She wasn't in any co-curricular activities either, so that must have meant she had her whole weekend to give up. Though she didn't tell him about the fact that she could become an emergency boat or raft, or even an emergency orca. She just mutely assumed that he would have thought that kind of information was irrelevant. Nevertheless, Embody came anyway in her most adventurous gear possible, which consisted of a thin navy sweater and charcoal jeans from UNIQLO. Not quite adventurous, but practical enough. Underneath was her Elemental Cloth, just in case. She didn't bring anything else along with her, it seemed advisable not to carry too much things with her. Besides, she would have guessed that Eustace would make a comment like, "Just bring two things: confidence and a voice!", or something to that extent. She lacked both, at times. It seemed that there was one person that arrived a little earlier than her, and she was more excited than Embody was, the little blonde was charging up the plank with all her exuberant little greetings. Embody figured she might as well do the same... That is, not run up the plank, but just say hello to her friend, and that rugged looking man who seemed to be not that fond of Eustace already. She walked a little slowly up the plank when Evy tackled Eustace with a hug, apprehensive of the situation. The captain looked less than pleased. Her knowledge of nautical knowledge was fairly limited, but she did come from a town with a lot of harbour activity. Of course, she didn't know about the superstitions, those were just old wives' tales. She first greeted Eustace with a polite "Good morning," in Keigo and a slight bow, and did the same for the others present, addressing them by their names with respective titles, or for McTavish's case, just a simple: "Captain." adding a deeper bow for respect, and then last but not least, she extended a hand feebly to Evy, rather than a bow, noticing that Evy had extended her own hand to Captain McTavish earlier, so maybe the other girl could appreciate the same gesture. Also, she did not want to be hugged. Edited by Naminote, Feb 3 2012, 12:48 AM.

A month was such a long and short time to live in an unfamiliar place. It was easy enough for Ash to make friends among those who shared similar stories of origin, and the island community felt more secure and less foreign than he anticipated considering its location in the exotic lands of the Orient, but the child still felt homesick and disconnected from his former life in the country. "Soon," they said. His closest friends -- his sworn brothers -- promised they would soon follow in his footsteps; that they would reunite and live together in a new land with a promising future. But, it was hard to think of the future when Ash was still stuck in the past. A handout which advertised a chance at adventure stirred a longing in the child's heart. The fond memories of exploring the limestone mines, of trekking through the large and ominous forest, of plunging into the darkness of the forgotten cellar rekindled a passion which had slowly faded during his sedate life on campus. The call awakened the sleeping adventurer deep within him, so he took up the challenge. Ash was not brimming with confidence like Evy, not timid like Embody, not overbearing like the Captain and not flamboyant like Eustace. Ash simply held himself with dignity, rubbed his father's pocketwatch for good luck and put one foot in front of the other until he stood among the circle. "Good morning," he greeted everyone. "I'm Asher. Just call me Ash." If he planned on making friends with the people present, it would not be now in such an impersonal way. Edited by Lemon, Feb 8 2012, 06:53 PM.

Santa Bob: Christmas comes once a year? Since when?
|
Everyone else had shown up and was starting introductions. Where oh where was the rest of the adventurers? At least one more student with an immunity to being able to sense impending danger was supposed to show up. Thing was... the student was already on deck. Those of magical bloodlines always seem to take sick humor in playing others around them. Sometimes it was just for the sake of fun. Other times it helped to confuse and bewilder potential opponents. Lastly, it served as a great tool to break up what could be a very boring introduction. Who wanted to do things like bow politely or offer gentle nods in the direction of others? Not Callum. He left that to the company of Asher and Embody. Eustace's flare entertained him, but the boy seemed too timid to wear the that jacket. Evy... well, Callum had never directly met her, but she was the only individual he recognized by reputation. Her cheery energy was something one heard about through the channels (especially when David was trying to chat his ear off about how amazing she was with a staff) and her actions immediately confirmed that 'ah ha' suspicion. Truth be told, her boundless energy had almost knocked him overboard when she ran up! High adventure on the high seas? No no... sounds redundant. Where's Tiras when I need him to write lines for me? He's the one with the lyrical talent. No no Maestro, hold that thought. Where could he have been to wear Evy's run aboard had almost knocked him into the bay? He was up to his old tricks. Callum liked keeping those around him confused, even his mates could never tell whether he was truly a sorcerer of high caliber or just a looney with a well trained duck. It takes a commitment to play the roll of a magician, and the Maestro's came at the cost of him playing the fool. Wearing a bathrobe, owning an intelligent duck (that he claimed held a part of his brain), and most of all: randomly using invisibility spells. Appear in random places at one's own timing made even the most trained evos and humans jump. It was both amusing to watch, and a great gauge to see how people acted under unexpected stress. If one is going to go on a high seas adventure with others on an enclosed space; then it is best to know how folks react under pressure. Thus, an invisible Callum had simply been taking a stroll up that plank when he heard Evy coming. It took some effort to make sure she didn't ram him. Frankly, being morning and all, his body was less than thrilled to be putting effort into a move. Despite that Callum did cover the few remaining feet just in time to watch Evy run up and be ecstatic. Oh she's fun! Why'd I wait til now to hang out with super hyper happy girl? The other girl came up, offering formal bows and greetings, and was quickly followed by another young man whom aside from bowing did much the same. Peking?! Where's my damn line? Come on! Spells almost up and we've nothing to show for it! 'Peking' apparently had something of an answer the Maestro found amusing, because behind the curtain of vanishga he cracked a smile. The chaotic and mad smile of a man one might expect of an individual whom took pride in being an ass. Both hands drew apart as his feet walked him closer to their circle. He stood just beyond their parameter, then brought the hands together in a single high volume clap. One would have needed an eye of a navigator to see the sliver of time between when the bubble popped and the clap sounded off. Even if one could see that- There was suddenly a Maestro aboard their ship. "Hello and Good-day! One Callum Alastair, local Maestro of Magic at your service." A young man with solid height but little weight took a short but flamboyant bow before immediately springing back up, all smiles. Today was the nothing short of the usual attire the shaggy brown haired mage. An earring with a red talon hung from his left ear, while beneath a navy blue bathrobe he appeared to be wearing a dark brown leather bomber jacket with knee high color matching boots, black pants and shirt seated beneath a dark red vest. At least he'd remembered clothes at this hour? He certainly still appeared pleased as punch toward the rest of them. It was only within the safety of his own mind that Callum had seriously considered the captain's words. It's really too bad this voyage is going to get dangerous... |
|||||||||
|
AVALON STUDENTS Callum Alastair: "...We've got chocolates, porn and imagination. Think we're dangerous enough as is." AZURA STUDENTS Caleb Prometheus: "No you don't need to speak, but could you please stop thinking about your breakfast?" Lance Lothorum: "Indoor voice? I work all day in a forge. You're gonna need a proper analogy if ya want me to shut up." | ||||||||||

It took a little effort on the Captain's part to speak up after Evy dashed aboard the ship and hugged Eustace. In the meantime, Eustace himself was more than happy to see Evy show up. ”Hi Evy!” He grinned and hugged her back the moment she was close enough to him, laughing at her giggles. He let go of her so she could greet the Captain. However, McTavish could only stare incredulously at Evy. ”You...you're coming aboard?” McTavish didn't take her hand. Rather, he almost angrily pushed it down away from him. He was frowning quite intently, and all the more so when the second arrival came aboard his vessel. This one seemed more polite, bowing low and addressing the Captain properly. It still didn't wipe the glower off of his face. He looked back at Eustace accusingly. ”Women? You brought women to sail with us?” McTavish was exasperated. ”...Yes?” ”Why the bloody Hell would you do that, lad?” Eustace froze up, unable to think of a proper response. He wanted to say something about sexism, but knowing the man's superstitious streak, he figured it probably had to do with some other nonsensical ghost story. McTavish fumed, and all in all Eustace wanted to keep his head. He simple shrugged his shoulders and tried to smile it off. McTavish was largely unamused, ”Well...I'm going to die anyway. Welcome aboard, lasses.” He didn't smile, but the Captain's expressions alleviated to some small degree. He offered a small bow to Embody before offering his hand to Evy again, though if she didn't want to shake it he'd understand. He sighed anyway, apparently resigning to his foretold fate. With Asher's appearance, McTavish's less than pleasant attitude took a slight turn for the better. He smiled, though only very briefly until he devolved back into his scowl, ”Welcome aboard lad. My name's Captain Benjamin McTavish. Though all of you will address me as Captain, please.” ”Hey Embody,” With McTavish taking some of the heat off of Eustace, the boy could finally greet the girl. His eyes lingered on her, for just short while, before he turned his attention to Asher, ”Hey Ash! Nice to meet you. I'm Eustace.” Eustace offered his own hand to the boy, grinning. ”See? Why couldn't you just get a few nice lads like this one-GAH!” McTavish had barely just enough time to finish the brunt of his sentence when a particular rodent made itself present aboard the Endeavour. That rodent being a Maestro. McTavish threw a wild punch in the direction of Callum, though as the Magi wisely kept just out of range of the Captain, he landed his blow on little more than air. ”Take that stupid robe off.” Though whether Callum did so or not, McTavish stopped caring the moment he turned his eyes from the Maestro. He set his attention back to Eustace, ”So, any more clowns coming to make a circus out of my ship?” ”Uh...nope.” Eustace seemed almost cheerful now, finally recovering from McTavish's beratings. ”Good. I now issue you all the rank of 'Ordinary Seaman'. As an OS, your duties for today are as follows,” McTavish walked towards an equipment closet aboard the vessel, opening it up and tossing a mop at the nearest person, ”Swab the deck until lunch time. After lunch, swab the deck until dinner.” Eustace looked at the floor underneath him. It was dry and clean. From his own experience, Eustace could tell it was already swabbed quite well. ”Um, Captain...I think it's already been swabbed.” McTavish glared at Eustace, then spat directly in front of the boy. He pointed at the stain he just made, ”Looks dirty to me. Get to it, and since you know so much about what swabbin' looks like, how about you teach the others?” McTavish mumbled to himself in quiet anger for a moment before turning to walk away, ”Now get to work. If I'm lucky there's still medicinal alcohol on board.” ”That...isn't safe to drink.” ”Shut up.” The Captain closed the quarters door behind him, leaving Eustace and the others nearby a closet with a bunch of mops, brooms, and dish soap to clean the deck with. Eustace sighed. He didn't mind a bit of labour...he did plenty of it with his father...but to subject everyone else with it? It just seemed rude. Still, he really really didn't want to make the Captain any angrier. Eustace turned to the others, ”Um...I hope you don't mind. Sorry about this...” He handed a scrubber to each of them before pulling out a few buckets of dish soap. Some of the other junior crew members were looking at the group in bemusement, as well as some amusement. Suddenly, the quarters door opened again, and fearing it was the Captain, Eustace yelped out and dunked his broom into the soap water. He hurriedly started scrubbing, trying to avoid eye contact with the Captain. As the others would likely notice, this wasn't the captain. Rather, a short and thin bespectacled Indian gentleman came to greet the lot. He too watched Eustace and the other students with a confused fascination, adjusting his glasses. ”Excuse me? Mr. Miller?” Eustace turned around, his heart beating rapidly out of fright. ”There you are! What are you doing cleaning the deck? Anyway, I'm Doctor Hitesh Sandhu, we talked over email?” Eustace blinked once, then replied in haste, ”Oh...oh right. Hi doctor!” ”Thank you.” Hitesh smiled, before looking over the others. ”It seems the Captain isn't quite interested in seeing you all until later, so I doubt he'll actually check up on your work. Just stay out of the inside of the ship for a while...” The doctor sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. He had a distinctly London accent, and likely was at least a second generation Englishman. ”Now, as for yourselves, I'm hoping Eustace filled you in on some details, but if not...I'll just give you basics. We're on a voyage to find the wreck of the USS Pequod. In other words, the ship Captain Ahab commanded when he hunted for Moby Dick. I am the head researcher aboard the Endeavour, and if I can get through to the Captain, I hope to have you all report directly to me instead of him. Should hopefully make our lives easier. Now...any questions while you all swab?” Hitesh concluded with a warm smile. The ship was finally lifting anchor and moving away from the harbour, sailing out into wider waters and towards the rising sun. At least, while on deck, they had a lovely view of the world around them. Edited by Falque, Feb 11 2012, 03:03 AM.

Evy nodded excitedly when the Captain asked if she was coming aboard, but… her face sank when he pushed her hand away, and she looked worriedly at Eustace, then back at the Captain, cringing when he cursed, then looking at Embody as she approached. After a moment, though, the Captain welcomed them aboard and offered his hand to Evy. Evy smiled, relieved, and shook it enthusiastically. “Thank you!” She chirped. She listened to his introduction, nodded, and beamed. “Thank you, Captain!” She corrected herself. “Good morning!” She smiled at Embody, excitedly shaking her hand when the other girl offered it. “Have we met before? You look kinda familiar, but… um… I’m Evy!” She giggled. “Nice to meet you.” The next person to join was Ash, and Evy grinned at him as well. “Hi Ash! Nice to meet you! I’m Evy!” The greeting and introduction was just as enthusiastic the second time around. There was a very familiar bubble popping, and Evy spun, eyes lighting up, expecting Sevens but – instead there was a boy that Evy didn’t recognize, and she stared at him, confused, blinking at his bathrobe. A few seconds later, before he’d even finished introducing himself, Evy’s eyes lit up. “You’re Callum!” She cheered enthusiastically, practically diving across the deck in an eager hug. “Hi! I’m Evy! It’s so nice to meet you!” She paused, realizing. “Oh! Um, well, I dunno if you know – I’m Sevens’s,” she giggled, blushing a little. “Anyway I’ve heard all about you! You’re so cool! But I don’t think we’ve ever met before, but it’s really good to finally meet you!” She squirmed, bouncing up and down. “I don’t mind!” Evy took the scrubber happily, examining it, and watched to see how Eustace was going to clean the deck. He dunked his scrubber in, and she went to do hers as well before someone interrupted them. She spun, smiling at the doctor. “Good morning, Doctor!” She said, enthusiastically. He was busy talking though, so Evy quieted, smiling brightly. They were going to find the ship that looked for… Moby Dick? Evy paused, trying to remember… Moby Dick was… the… the whale! She’d never read it but it was about a guy named Ishmael? So who was Captain Ahab? After a moment, Evy shrugged, admiring the view outside and the rising sun with a bright smile. “Ummm, no questions yet,” Evy grinned at him. “Wait! Oh. Um, what kind of stuff are we going to be doing?” She scratched her head, leaning on her scrubber. |

Embody offered a polite and understated 'Sumimasen deshita', to McTavish in apologies to her gender when he had bowed back to her. She would have added an 'I'll work hard,' or some kind of small guarantee that she wouldn't be a burden, but Embody lacked a voice most of the times, only saying what she could. She just left her comments at that. It seemed like he was accepting of his impeding death or doom from the presence of two females at sea, and thus welcomed them aboard. Suddenly she wasn't so sure about this whole 'adventure on high seas' business. Evy was excited to shake her hand, and that was when Embody realised that the girl was familiar. "I think so," she responded quietly, pondering about it a little. Then she forgot to say her own name to Evy, but the other girl was already off to greet Ash and Callum, who appeared quite... suddenly, on board. Surprises could be startling. Embody guessed she could get better acquainted with Evy later, so she just stood there, a little lost and neglected, once Evy had hugged the strange man who wore the bathrobe. The sound of her own name called to her attention. "Hello, Eustace-san," she said, managing to say something to him before his attention shifted to Asher. It felt that he was looking at her for quite a long time. Did he think that she was perhaps dressed strangely for the occasion? Well, maybe compared to a girl in soccer gear, and a mage in a bathrobe. Though if anyone wanted to get to know her, they would have to do the approaching. Embody seemed thoroughly distracted by something else entirely - perhaps the sea breeze and the cry of the early seagulls. It was a nice wind, perfect for flying. She felt a little envious of the birds in the air, as her feet remained firmly placed on the deck with the others. Captain McTavish's spitting ruined Embody's wistful mood. That was disgusting, but there was nothing she could do about it, apart from clean up the Captain's saliva dutifully, as she soon got to work without any complaints. She scrubbed over the spot several times, following the grain of the wood until there was no trace of saliva was present. She was interrupted when a doctor appeared, whom seem to be well-acquainted with Eustace already. She wasn't familiar with Moby Dick, as she classified that as 'foreign literature'. Though she knew that Moby Dick was a white sperm whale, and that she was quite sure the book was fiction. Embody had no questions to ask to the Indian gentleman. She was really quite shy to inquire about things, but Evy's question was a good start - she would like to know the answer for that. The ship was leaving the port already, and the scenery seemed really quite nice. It invoked a lovely mood despite the task of already cleaning the deck of a ship so early. |

The words of Captain McTavish caught Ash's attention for a brief moment, but it's impact lasted much longer. "Die?" He repeated softly to himself. He was unaware they were taking on such a dangerous adventure when he signed up, but the captain, with all his rugged experience on the open sea, must have known better. Ash swallowed his apprehensions for now as the group continued with their introductions. Names were important, so Ash took careful consideration to remember each and every name he heard. The Captain was the easiest to remember for he reminded Ash of the poem by Walt Whitman; a favorite of the young scholar. Then came Eustace, a rather anxious young man who was also the patron for their adventure. Ash shook his hand with respect for he himself could never pull together such a grand operation at such a young age. His longtime friend Sera seemed to reflect in the mannerisms of Evy. It gave Ash a sense of nostalgia. He smiled warmly at her energetic handshake and tried his best to sound proper and polite despite the aggressive embrace. According to Eustace, the mysterious female who seemed to keep to herself went by the name of Embody. She reminded Ash of a raven as from the poem by Edgar Allan Poe; she was poise and venerable despite her youth. The last and most flamboyant of the troupe was Callum Alastair. His display of magic was impressive in a comical sort of way. Given his unusual dress and extravagant act, Ash could only compare him to a rodeo clown. With first impressions out of the way, the Captain issued his directives to the motley crew. Ash grabbed the mop as it was tossed to him, but by his expression, the boy clearly disliked the idea of swabbing all day. Even more so when the Captain showed disrespect by spitting on the floor and brushing aside Eustace's concerns. Ash was starting to remember why he hated adults so much. The Captain soon disappeared, and Eustace, for all his good intentions, could only look forlorn, plea that the others follow his lead and do as the Captain bid. Ash scowled and conceded as everyone else did the same. However, it wasn't long before a new face appeared and asked for a moment of the group's time. The man, Doctor Hitesh Sandhu, introduced himself as the ship's head researcher and explained a little about what their voyage entailed. Ash was familiar with the story of Moby-Dick. It was a tale of great adventure set out on the high seas. Such stories were favorites of Wendy who loved to recite them whenever the boys came to visit, and in turn, they became favorites of Ash as well. However, as the boy soon asked, his only concern was the legitimacy of the claim. "I thought Moby-Dick was just a story; a work of fiction." Were they chasing shadows, or was their some truth in fiction? The ship soon released its anchor and started rolling away from port. A frightening thought jumped in the back of Ash's mind. "This might be the last time I see land," whispered the country boy to himself. He could only sigh, turn around and continue his labor. Edited by Lemon, Feb 16 2012, 03:38 PM.

God-Emperor of all Belugas

”That's what I thought too, of course.” Hitesh grinned, almost apologetically. He could believe the story was real, there was evidence for it. Recent evidence. But trying to convince anyone who's never seen said evidence was a nearly impossible task. Maybe he should just ask them all to clap their hands and believe for the time being, until they reached their destination. ”Eustace here managed to trace, somehow, Captain Ahab's voyage along the seas, and urged us to direct satellite imaging to an uninhabited island nearly a thousand kilometres East of Argentina. Usually it's covered by heavy fog, and the image itself was distorted...but we did find a the outline of a shipwreck. The rest...is mostly trust on this boy's part.” Dr. Sandhu looked to Eustace, who himself seemed a little vacantly present for the time being. Maybe he was dreaming up better adventures that involved less deck swabbing, or maybe he really was just vacant. In any case, there was a clear indicator of what they were relying on. ”And well, the Endeavour has not seen much voyage since...sorry, that's the Captain's tale to tell. Let's just say he's ready to chase any fantasy, so long as he can live out at sea.” Hitesh was largely disappointed, only one and a half questions. He didn't show it on his face, but in his mind he secretly wished he'd have the chance to talk more. Eustace was already tuning him out, if he hadn't tuned him out from the start once he started scrubbing furiously. ”For the most part, just enjoy the voyage, and help out when needed. When we reach our destination, Mr. Miller insists we let you all help him pilot the submersible craft. Trust me, that will be fun.” The doctor nodded and smiled, before excusing himself back to the bridge. The Captain, as promised, seemed polite enough to leave the kids to their own designs so long as they didn't venture from the deck, and at lunch time they were invited in to set up their bedding and dine with the rest of the crew. The boys all received their own cabin to share with Dr. Hitesh himself. The cabin itself had small bunk beds, hardly a luxury, but compact enough to fit them in along with the doctor. The girls were a little more lucky, as the Captain opted to move out of his personal cabin and let Evy and Embody stay within it. There was only one double bed, but the crew wheeled in two cots and set them side by side for the other girl. Whether this was all McTavish's idea seemed highly suspect, given the sheer pamper, but...well, it was his cabin, though. The only question now, was where the Captain happened to be sleeping. There seemed to be no sign of him at lunch, either. The food itself was far from gourmet, but it went down much easier than anything discovered on an economy class flight. Eustace, for one, had no qualms in gobbling up what was set in front of him, a thick stew of many different ingredients blended into a storm of clashing flavours and covered up with potent spices. Filling, but of course far from gourmet. ”I can't wait!” a small bit of stew managed to escape from Eustace's mouth, forgetting to entirely swallow before nearly shouting out with excitement, ”What do you think we'll find on the ship? Oh, I wonder if Moby Dick is still around, of if he had, like, an even more vicious son! Hm, I wonder how dangerous Shredder Reef really is. Do mermaids exist? I'd like to meet a mermaid. Or a Flying Dutchman! Oh, what if the Pequod is a Flying Dutchman?! That'd be awesome...” ”Half a litre of stew and suddenly you don't shut up.” McTavish towered behind Eustace, his thunderous voice a little more quelled since his less than civil outburst. Eustace froze in place and paled, almost sweating. He looked up slowly and cautiously, until his eyes met the silhouette of his Captain. ”Nice job scrubbing my deck. If you were my nanny.” McTavish surveyed the others at the table, growling just a little as he passed his eyes along Evy and Embody, though he kept any more vocal objections to himself. He hated women on board his ship, but he didn't hate women. Quite the opposite. It was also in bad luck to be discourteous to women. Go figure. ”H-Hi Mr. McTav-” ”That's Captain McTavish to you, you runt.” The Captain pulled out a chair beside Eustace and dropped himself down, the floor and chair creaking quietly under the force. McTavish, it seemed, had no ability not to scowl at everything, ”What's all this talk of mermaids and Dutchmen? You don't believe in luck for a second, but you have the gall to ramble bullocks about sea creatures and fanciful ghost ships?” Eustace was apparently too scared to answer. ”Figures, you sod.” McTavish turned his attention to the other students, ”And what about you lot? Speak up, what do you think of all these 'fairy tales'?” McTavish practically glared at each of them, demanding something a little more than Eustace's dumb silence. Trust; that was all that there was? Apart from some vague evidence, Hitesh Sandhu was right - it was mostly grounded on trust 'on the boy's part'. Embody found herself also gazing at Eustace, hoping that she could believe in him as much as she did when the unknowns so murky, and their direction unclear. That challenged her current belief in him, unsure of what would come out of this at all. Eustace seemed distant, and Dr. Sandhu had further explained that the Research Vessel has not seen much of the seas since... Information omitted; it seemed that it was too personal regarding the Captain. When the doctor mentioned that McTavish was willing to chase 'any fantasy', she really couldn't picture it at all. Superstitions were quite different from fantasy. After deck-scrubbing was completed, Embody was directed to her sleeping quarters, which she would share with Evy. Even if she was sharing it with another person, it seemed all too daunting. Sure, she had a Western-style bed back on campus, but that was just from MUJI Life, and catered to an oriental market. It seemed all a little too daunting to be actually sleeping in the Captain's cabin, after his apparent dislike of the two. Or maybe this was why he was so opposed to women being on the ship. She just had the slightest feeling that her presence as a female seemed to have messed up some kind of delicate ship hierarchy. So, where would the Captain be sleeping...? She set her belongings down in a little corner, not on any of the beds so as to claim one of them. She figured that she would let Evy pick where she'd like to sleep. Evy had to pick something, or work something out at least. If she couldn't, Embody would probably be more comfortable spending her sleeping hours as a cube. Then came the second problem: lunchtime. Even cubes and polymorphs had to eat something. Embody meekly accepted a half-serving of stew, and ate through it slowly in a corner facing no one, picking at the vegetables with her spoon as though she was some kind of picky bird. She timed each spoonful when nobody was paying any attention to her. Hopefully her lack of presence meant that she would be largely ignored. If not, then perhaps Eustace could explain the apparent problem Embody had with eating in front of others. She had just finished what she ate after Eustace had rambled on about something which she couldn't exactly follow. Who had a vicious son? What was a 'Flying Dutchman', was it something or someone who she should pay more attention to? She didn't exactly like the descriptor of 'awesome' that was placed on the 'Flying Dutchman' that Eustace described, but the moment he had referred to the Pequod, she was at ease. Then the Captain appeared. After some berating, for the first time, Captain McTavish actually asked something from the 'supernatural children' aboard from the ship. After some silence, Embody got up from her corner, and joined the rest of the people at the table. The bowl she was carrying was empty. She replied to the captain with a rather strong opinion (for her), but in a faint and respectful voice, "I don't believe in miracles. Nor fairytales." Upon boarding the ship, this was the first instance where she replied with more than one sentence, but one could expect nothing more from the quiet and shy girl. Even though vampires, werewolves and other supernatural entities existed on Campus, it wasn't as though they had belonged to fairytales, or mere Kindermärchen. There was no Wolf to lead astray a girl in a red hood, or some witch that lived in a hut on fowl's legs, or a house built entirely of candy. So if she believed in neither, why was she chasing something that was just a little more than a legend? |

Ash remembered from his geography class that Argentina was in South America. Considering their starting point was Japan, the crew of Endeavour had a long journey ahead. Not only would the ship have to travel across the entire Pacific Ocean, but their destination was another thousand kilometres past the tip of South America. If the students were expected to mop the deck during the entire voyage, then the Captain would be sorely disappointed. With his explanation over, Dr. Sandhu excused himself into the ship and left the students to their own devices. Ash continued to mop as he was bid, but while doing so, he and Evy soon got to talking and exchanging stories of adventures and friends. Her stories were filled with danger and intrigue, and her friends sounded daring and noteworthy. His stories, in contrast, were tame and ordinary, and his friends seemed so normal and unassuming. Ash could tell she was his senior in more ways than one, but despite their differences, they shared many similarities which ultimately led them to becoming quick friends. The midday sun soon loomed overhead, and it cued Dr. Sandhu to usher the students indoors. Ash chose one of the upper bunks to save the taller men the difficulty of crawling in and out of the tight sleeping quarters. He only packed enough clothes to last a week, so the light backpack fit snugly on his bed without taking too much space. The lunch served on the ship reminded Ash of the school cafeteria back in his hometown; good enough to eat, but not good enough to remember. Eustace, as Ash soon came to expect, was filled with enough excitement as to make the young man forget his table manners. His poor etiquette was forgivable considering his pivotal role in making the whole trip happen. It was then that the Captain graced the students with his presence. Ash was still rather bitter about their last encounter, but he showed enough respect to listen when the man spoke. Stories of adventures were always interesting, but stories of legends and fairytales had their own intrigues. As Embody soon demonstrated, not everyone believed in such fictitious make-believe, but Ash held no such skepticism. "I believe there's a grain of truth to every tale," stated Ash. He tried to back his claim with a very relevant example. "If not, then why are we all on this voyage?" It was an obvious opinion which someone was bound to state; Ash was just the first person to do so. Edited by Lemon, Mar 4 2012, 09:10 PM.

“Cool!” Evy grinned at the thought of piloting a sub… sub permissible craft. She had no idea what that was but it sounded totally awesome and she was already super excited about it. “Thanks Doctor Sandhu!” Evy waved. “It was really nice to meet you!” Evy thought scrubbing the deck was actually really fun. At first it seemed kinda boring, but then she and Ash started talking. Ash was awesome! He was a little younger than her but he’d already done such cool things. Evy loved hearing all the stories about him and his friends, and she felt like they were already friends for life by the time they went inside. “Wow!” Evy looked at the room, her eyes wide. “This is so big! It’s so nice of the Captain to let us use his room, don’t you think?” She grinned at Embody, plopping her bag down on the pushed together cots without, evidently a second thought on the matter. Evy enjoyed the food too; she was hungry after waking up early and working outside. She was gobbling up her stew when Eustace started chattering again, and Evy giggled; if she’d had a mouthful at that moment (luckily she didn’t), there might have been a mess. The Captain appeared out of nowhere and Evy squeaked, eyes wide, looking up at him. “Hi Captain McTavish!” she said, politely, face broadening into a bright smile as soon as she could. Evy scratched her head a little, tilting it. Nami said she didn’t believe in miracles, and Ash said he thought something was true from it. Evy bit her lip, shifting in her chair, and shook her head. “I don’t think that – that everything is true, but I’m friends with…” she counted, “four werewolves, a vampire and a mermaid, I’ve met real ghosts and Kapre, like a Bigfoot but in the Philippines, and…” Evy scratched her head again. “Not all things are true, but I think some things are.” |

McTavish went and kept count. So the faceless girl didn't believe in them. Good, she had a brain. The boy thought there was always a truth buried in the lie. Acceptable, he had half a brain. Evy wholeheartedly believed in most of them, and claimed some of her best friends were fantastical creatures. Well...McTavish at least admired her enthusiasm. He could use a bit more of that on a ship. But the answer to strike the most with the Captain was, of course, Asher's. An answer, but followed by a sort of enquiry of its own. Perhaps the boy meant for it to be rhetorical, a logical consequence based off of his own answer, but McTavish had a different reply lined up for just the occasion, ”Because I get paid this way.” McTavish lied. Not that he wasn't paid, or would lose payment under circumstances, but it wasn't the reason for his going along with the voyage. He had a stake in all of this, it was just...not quite known as of yet. Whether the children ever knew the right answer was an exercise of belief in of itself. ”Well runt, it seems you aren't the only loon on board. You know how to pick them.” McTavish helped himself to a massive spoonful of Eustace's remaining stew, despite the boy's silent objections and dismay. ”But if there's one thing I'll agree, it's Shredder Reef. And bloody Hell, we're dancing straight into the heart of it.” While McTavish started to ramble about the multitude of Bermuda Triangle-esque ship disappearances, inexplicable sinking and so on, Eustace silently eyed Embody. He didn't see her eat, though not just because of the face issue. She took such a small portion, and though it was all gone, he wasn't sure she could really sustain herself with it. But even beyond that, the boy was most affected by her answer. As encouraging as it was to have Evy believe and Asher at least put some thought in the possibility, Embody seemed to be siding with the mean old Captain. It felt like betrayal, and Eustace's heart groaned as a small dyke cracked its way deep. It took some energy not to suddenly frown, and a little more energy not to have his eyes mist. In the middle of the Captain's rambling, Eustace pretended to speak up. As expected, the Captain interrupted almost immediately, ”Speak up, you brat! You want me to think I'm getting too old? That I can't hear you natter like a buffoon?” Eustace paled and started to babble incoherently, apparently having lost the ability to speak properly, ”*10110111 11010000 01110101 10010110 00101111 11100010 10001000 00000010 00011011 01011100 00101000 00110101 10101000 11110010 01011000 10001010 00110111 11101110 01110100 00011001 10110001 10111010 10100111 11111101 11101011 00110111 10000111 11110001 10111111 01100011 01100101 00110001 00001010 01010001 00001100 01101111 11000011 01000101 10001110 10110100 00001111 01001011 10111001 11100111 10001010 01110101 11001011 11111000 01110000 00110110 01010111 11000101 11001110 10100000 01101001*” To most of them, his words made absolutely no sense. There was one special recipient who got a much different take on what he said, however. Embody, would you please head to the deck once I leave? ”Oh, there we go. I figured you had bullocks to say. Get out of my face and get some rest.” McTavish nearly spat, grabbing the small residue of Eustace's remaining stew for personal consumption. Eustace didn't hesitate to excuse himself from the table. He glanced apologetically to Evy and Asher, but a more expectant look was written on his face as his eyes glossed over Embody. She would understand, of course, and very likely none of the others would catch on. If all went as planned, Embody would excuse herself not long after, and thus remained McTavish, Ash, and Evy. Though they may also try to escape, Dr. Hitesh also came to join the table. McTavish rolled his eyes, but in truth, it was better company than Eustace. ”Captain, Navigation is picking up something odd. They want your opinion upstairs on it.” McTavish grunted after finishing the last spoonful, ”Figures. It's like you lot have never seen an ocean before. Well, 'night Asher. Good night, Evy.” Interestingly, he nodded to them both before excusing himself to the bridge, and for night. Hitesh sighed. A small note of confusion dotted his face as he made his headcount. Where was Eustace and Embody? Hopefully not in the captain's line of sight, unless that meant thrown overboard. ...By the captain. ”Good news! I managed to convince the Captain not to have you swab decks the whole time. Instead, you will be helping me with sorting through the research and evidence we have on this sunken ship. It should be fun, like a miniature treasure hunt all on its own!” The man seemed just a little too excited for his own good. ”Anywho, I was wondering-...” Dr. Hitesh was cut off as the ship suddenly halted in motion. The seats were thankfully screwed down into the floor, but the dishes were another story. At several knots, silverware flew straight off their own table as well as others towards the bow, and the students and sailors themselves would feel their own inertia try to throw them right out of their seats and onto the floor. Hitesh himself was unceremoniously grounded after a cry of terror was cut short by a harsh landing against the floor. Afterwards, there was only groaning. At first, the hall was silent, including the sailors. But growing conversation took hold of them, and whispers and frightened theories bubbled up to the surface as panic set in among the crew. Hitesh himself was both confused and agitated. ”What was that!?” Realizing neither Evy nor Asher likely knew...it was perhaps best to go check outside. As for Embody, she would find Eustace, as promised, at the bow of the ship. The waves crushed themselves against the steel hull, trace sprays of the ocean misting Eustace. His back was turned from the entrance trying to visualize the black sea in front of him. It was too dark, even with the searchlight above canvassing, to see anything of note. Little more than rough sounds of waves, and the smell of salted wind even indicated they were still out at sea. Eustace turned his head slightly to see Embody approaching him. He turned away almost immediately out of reaction, perhaps a little embarrassed that she actually walked all the way out to see him. Still, she could not see his face much like he could not see hers. Whatever Eustace felt at that moment, he put on his best mask by the time he turned around to face her again. ”Emi...” it was private, on the deck. Most men by this hour had gone to bed or were up in the bridge navigating out of the chill air. There was much to do in the early morning, after all. At night, the only thing you could do was keep yourself from accidentally slipping overboard. For Eustace however, that sense of danger was what allowed him to garner the privacy he needed. He smiled at Embody, pushing himself off the railing behind him and stepping towards the girl. He seemed concerned about something, but was trying to hide it. He was smiling too much for a cold night, ”I was thinking. About your answer to the Captain.” Eustace looked down at Embody and reached his hands out to her hips. He seemed tentative, the way he touched her. Eustace seemed unsure whether Embody would approve of the contact. Still, he tried his best to be close to her. ”Do you trust me, though? It's okay if you don't believe in everything...or anything.” Eustace blushed a little. He chewed on his lip, and stroked Embody's sides slowly and lightly. Still, the simple and weak action was enough to warm his hands just a little more. Embody meant...a lot to him. ”But...if you can believe in me? Just for my sake?” He exhaled, tired-sounding. He didn't want to confront Embody like this, but he didn't feel like he could go on without some encouragement. Ash and Evy's responses weren't enough. He needed those he cared the most to understand and believe. Embody would get enough time to respond. However, before Eustace could make his own reply, the boat's sudden stop launched Eustace and Embody right forward and slamming against the rail. Eustace himself flipped back over the railing, his hands only just managing to grasp one of the poles. A large wave made from the displacement crashed against the bow, and Eustace shivered violently as deathly cold water drenched the majority of his body, chilling him to the bone. Embody was a little more lucky. Eustace was in front of her as the two slipped forward and rammed into the guard rail. She would bounce backward, but her own bounce would force Eustace just over the edge. The ship still rocked, and Eustace and the deck was soaking with water. ”Help...” Eustace's cry was bleakly quiet, the chill weakening his lungs' intake. His fingers around the wet and cold pole were starting to slip, and his body felt like it weighed a ton as salt water bogged him down. Speaking of which...all he could smell and taste was salt. That was fine if McTavish was on this journey as his duty and his income. She didn't mind the answers that the others had, and she half expected them anyway - Embody didn't think that the others were on board for the same reasons she was called to participate in this treasure hunt. She didn't notice Eustace eying her; Embody's attention was fixated on her empty bowl and the wood grain of the table, not really taking in any of what the captain said, or what anyone else said. Though with the sound of her name, she slowly raised her head to the one who had called to her. Nobody else seemed to take notice of this encrypted communication between the two - she could have just raised her head because Eustace was speaking the same gibberish that everyone else had heard. Why did he announce that publicly? She realized that this must have been one of his abilities at McTavish's dismissive remark. Her eyes narrowed at the Captain when he took Eustace's remaining stew. She caught Eustace's gaze at her, and when he left, she followed in his actions. "Thanks for the meal," she announced softly, though there was a hint of spite or disapproval in her tone as her obscured stare lingered on the captain before leaving. Outside, it was dark. She was surrounded in a soundscape, more than anything else. The wind whistled past her ears and the waves crashed against the steel hull of the boat, that she thought she might have been blind, if it wasn't for the small slivers of light that passed momentarily from the searchlight. She made out the silhouetted figure of Eustace at the bow, and she made her way towards him, her eyes adjusting to the darkness a little, but she was unable to discern much of what she could see. The use of her real name suggested that he was going to bring up something personal to either her or him. ”I was thinking. About your answer to the Captain.” Just that...? Embody was just going to give her 'indifferent' answer until he touched her intimately. Then the words were caught in her throat, and she sighed sharply; her exhale sounded slightly jittery. Perhaps she was affected by the cold, or how he was too close. She thought she was building up resistance to the effect his touch had on her, but this seemed a little too much compared to what he had done in the past. Embody tried not to shiver. She felt slightly warmed when he stroked her lightly, but she moved slightly closer when a peculiar chill tingled through her limbs. "I'll believe you, but not for your sake," Embody answered. "Because I'm..." She faltered. The ship lurched and her own inertia meant she slammed against Eustace painfully. He was barely holding on the guard rail. Embody knelt down frantically, and obeyed his plea without a conscious thought. Her hands grasped his wrist that was holding the rail, and she tried to find his other hand. He was so cold and his skin was slick from the water. She tried to believe she could lift him up without any help - if she could carry him up in the air, then she should be able to help him up. Though he was weighed down by saturation, and slipped out of her grasp. Embody's heart sank, suddenly feeling that she couldn't process reality correctly. How could she just do that, when they were finally... The searchlight illuminated other figures on board, and Embody tried to handle the situation, taking the life buoy and untangling the cord frantically. "E-Emergency. He's overboard," Her words were sharp and quick, but anyone could piece together what happened, especially since Embody had seemed so quiet and unresponsive to almost anything that had happened since her appearance. "Hurry," she added desperately. She needed the captain to stop the ship. Although McTavish might have thought that Embody was the only one out of the 'loons' on board that had a brain, she felt that her brain and rational nature had also disappeared, although she tried to keep her calm. What were the chances that he fell into the water? Please don't fall into the water... She didn't have time to stop and weep for losing him; she could save her tears for later. What if he required more than a lifebuoy to save him? She could always make her way down to the ocean with him as an orca - if need be, she could even morph into a lifeboat. Embody was at a loss as to what to do. She called out his name almost hopelessly. Her voice sounded as though it was drowned out by the wind, although this was the first time she must have raised her voice. |

I'm a time-traveler! I travel forward at the miraculous rate of 60 seconds per minute
|
Captain McTavish’s pragmatism made Evy pout although only a little. She wrinkled her nose at the Captin when he called her a loon, and tilted her head to the side. His stories made her eyes widen a little; ships disappeared here? Whoa! Evy glanced around, wondering if they’d see anything like that… or disappear themselves? She wasn’t sure she like that idea! Evy was quite happy being there, disappearing would be awful! Evy blinked at the gibberish that came from Eustace’s mouth, scratching her head, slowly. She shrugged when the Captain left, starting to open her mouth to ask Eustace if he was okay, but then he was already getting up, and Evy just… sort of nodded. “Night Eustace!” She beamed at him. “Sleep well.” Evy ate a bit more of her soup, looking between McTavish and Ash, humming a little. She slurped up the last bite, wondering what to do now that she’d finished. Even Evy wasn’t sure what to say now! She started to figure something out, but then Dr. Hitesh came and Evy beamed at him, relived. “Hi Dr. Hitesh!” She paused, “Good night, Captain!” She smiled at him, even if he was grumpy. “Yay!” Evy giggled at Dr. Hitesh’s news. “Wow! That’s awesome! That sounds better than swabbing the deck. Actually, swabbing the deck was kind of fun,” she grinned conspiratorially at Ash, and giggled again. “Oh!” Evy shrieked. Her hand shot up, catching her empty bowl as it left the table, and spinning it, snagging her silverwear and just managing to catch Ash’s spoon as well, settling it down as the boat settled. “Dr. Hitesh!” Evy jumped to her feet. “Are you okay?” She would help him up if he needed help, looking at Ash worriedly, then around. “C’mon, let’s go investigate!” She tugged at Dr. Hitesh, nodding to Ash, and took off, dashing out of the room and up onto the deck. She could just barely see Embody in the dark, and it was a moment before she processed the other girl’s words. He’s overboard…? Eustace! Evy realized the other boy hadn’t gone to bed after all. She gasped, looking at the railing and the darkness of sky and horizon beyond. If – if he fell in, would they ever find him? “Eustace!” Her voice joined Embody’s. She glanced around, and her eyes fell on a bit of rope, a long coil secured to the deck. Evy didn’t hesitate, grabbing the end and wrapping it around her waist, tying it. It wasn’t the most expert knot, but it’d hold… probably. Well, Evy could tie her shoelaces and string, and it wasn’t that different, right? She tugged at the rope as hard as she could, trying to secure it, and dashed to the edge of the boat. Honestly, she’d normally have just climbed over, but – something about seeing the rope had reminded her of Sevens. Sevens always told her to be more careful, and Evy figured securing herself was more careful! If the whole situation hadn’t been so dangerous, really, she’d have been quite proud of the insight. “Eustace!” She called out, dangling off the edge of the railing. She tried to secure herself as best as she could against it, peering at the dark water below. Maybe it was luck that she could even hear him whimpering, but the noise just reached her ears. “Eustace! Eustace, where are you? I – grab my hands, if you can!” Evy stretched farther, reaching out, eyes searching desperately in the darkness, trying to figure her friend so she could grab hold of him. “Eustace!” She called, slippery wet fingers extended as far as they could go. |

As naive as he was, Ash assumed everyone had joined the expedition in search of adventure. He had forgotten that it was possible some people were only in it for the money as the Captain soon announced. The boy mentally reminded himself not to reveal his powers in front of the greedy grown up lest he be hunted a second time. Ash, with all his knowledge and understanding, didn't know Shredder Reef. Such specific geographical information was beyond his current studies, so even though he had a negative opinion of the Captain, when the man told his stories of the area the young boy was instantly enthralled. It wasn't until Eustace spoke up did Ash snap out of his stupor. Of course, he couldn't understand a word the young man spoke, so Ash simply waved Eustace farewell and wished him a good night like Evy. It wasn't long after that did both the Captain and Embody depart leaving Evy and Ash by themselves at the table. While Ash was thinking of the next great adventure from his childhood to tell his new friend, it was Dr. Hitesh who first showed up and relayed some good news to the young sailors. Ash could only echo Evy's sentiments by responding to her remark. "Less deck swabbing for me, thank you very much," he said in jest. There was a sudden impact as the ship stopped and everything not bolted down kept moving. Evy was nimble and easily avoided harm, but Ash, like the doctor, had a bit more trouble with the sudden shift. He narrowly grabbed the edge of the table and saved himself from getting tossed to the ground like the doctor, but the surprise was the same for everyone. Evy was the first to take action as she made for the exit to see what happened; Ash and the doctor were not far behind. Stepping outside and staring deep into the endless darkness gave the lost boy a sense of familiarity. The cold air, the rocking ground, the pitch black void -- all seemed to embrace him like a mother would a child. But, the cry of Embody followed by the voice of Evy woke the boy to his senses. He rushed to the sight only to see Evy tying a rope around her waist and eying the edge of the ship intently. "No!" Ash tried to rush up and stop her from going over the rails, but Evy barely slipped through his fingers. Instead, he grabbed tightly onto the rope and prayed desperately that everything would be fine; that by some miracle, both Evy and Eustace would come back alive and unharmed. It was too soon to lose new friends -- not when they were just starting their adventure together; not if he could help it. Edited by Lemon, Mar 27 2012, 12:25 PM.

Santa Bob: Christmas comes once a year? Since when?
|
(OOC: horrid post is horrid. Apologies) Captain McCrankPants wanted the robe off. The Maestro... refused to comply. Whether the half hearted punch or sheer tone provoked defiance no one could tell. Or perhaps had failed to hear him. Right now he stood with his head cocked at an angle, looking out toward the port city as though it were already fading away. Perhaps the mind saw something of interest within the future. More likely he simply found El Captain's attitude to be beneath any reaction. Also probable that he had forgotten where he was. "You're Callum!" "Only when i feel so inclined." His answer was far removed, but carried just the hint of a smirk. After all, a name is but a description. Happy or sad could be descriptions as well, could he not be one of those? Only when Evy explained how she heard of him did the Maestro blink. Those blue gray eyes still stared at the city, but he did speak again to her... and only to her. "Sevens... good student. Fast learner, and creative. It's good to know she has someone. Take pride in having someone, and being someone." A 'good to meet you too' might have sounded better, but Callum wanted Evy to understand that he was not the type of person to think unfavorably about relationships. The only action her words resulted in was him wheeling about to stare out toward the school in the exact same bloody way. As though it were far off and they might not see it again. Even when the kinder crewmate introduced themselves, the Maestro remained like a stone staring off toward the school. It was home after all. Evy had Sevens, and probably many other friends there. The rest of his classmates presumably did too. For Callum, this would be his first big trip with other classmates since India... that did not bode well for their chances. To be fair, they never had a chance. When lunchtime came, the Maestro complied only in silence. He ate in silence and purposefully gave his only intensity toward looking at the food. When the captain dared to ask about fairy tales, he dared only a small but dark chuckle. Daring to dream that the impossible spits upon us daily, only innocence or exposure cause such things. Eustance sounded to be largely the first, while Evy... Callum suspected her to be more the second than even she realized. Asher's incite was the type of a man that had yet to encounter the impossible... but the other girl? Her answer was weird. Almost as though she could simply reforge existence itself levels of odd. His own opinion was kept under wraps, mostly because it would do little good to disagree with the thought patterns of others. To change a belief one needed concrete proof. Evy's description of meeting the fantastic did nothing to help the Captain see what she had seen. In this instance, the choice to not believe was probably simpler and more welcoming than reality. Fantastic things existed. truly every fairytale imagined could be reality somewhere, somehow. This left the potential for great beauty and unimaginable horror, a darkness beyond what five senses could be left to describe. Callum returned to finishing his own stew, acting completely cut off from reality right up until one very key moment. Right when something brought the ship to a halt, he rose up, feet arching in the boots that could maintain his balance under almost any circumstance. While dishes and some stew were tossed about, he simply stood there with an expression of mild annoyance. The aggravation was in fact that his robe was now somewhat dirty."My robe..." "What was that?" "Something unbelievable." It was easier to grin now. The unknown caused fear in most, but without that element there existed only discovery. One could take joy in danger if they allowed the understanding of the fantastic. With that the Maestro followed suit with Evy and Asher, exiting up toward the deck to get a view of what might have caused such a jumble throughout the ship. Calls were heard about a soul falling overboard. Evy charged into the dark water almost without a second thought, and only the actions of young Asher assured the possibly of return. Yet with three people already working on that situation, this left a very large gap that needed to be filled. Something caused that. Something in the water had done this to the ship. The oddity from navigation! Damn these eyes for not seeing better in darkness. Come on, show yourself... This was not his boat. He could not yell at the crew to turn off lights and power, not while Eustace was overboard and Evy with him. He would not add to the chaos but rather attentively seek its source. With the robe now cast aside, he rushed toward the rails to look over the waters and seek answers. Despite all the water, his boots could still trigger individual balance and gravity fields. All that was needed was the chance to see the entity or object responsible. |

”Great. Great. Bloody gorgeous. I knew we were done for.” ”Captain, we've a man overboard!” ”Only one idiot could manage that on a painted ship...” Indeed. As Evy reached her head and arms over the edge of the boat, the faintest silhouette of a poor boy clawing at the hull of the ship would formulate itself. Eustace was hardly any more real to the eyes than his own illusions, but his desperate whimpering was real enough. In the darkness, Eustace sniffled and mingled salt water with salt water. He knew, unlike the others, that his grip would not last the next minute. ”Ev-Evy?” Eustace whispered as loudly as he could. The voice confused him. Where was Embody, then? She was just there a moment ago...he could still hear her voice. Was he just imagining it? Did she abandon him? Not only did the fear of drowning pull at his heart, but the possibility that the one girl he cared for left him to die alone...alone... Eustace wasn't ready to fall into despair. Not yet. Not ever. He noticed Evy's hand against the background of the searchlight as it loomed behind Evy in an eclipse. With that flash of direction, Eustace knew exactly where to throw his weight and make the grasp against her wrist. Evy was strong, surprisingly strong. Eustace had faith in her and he rope. Unfortunately, it would be his grip that betrayed him. The salt water left Eustace incapable of staying his own grasp, and the fleeting hope of safety was quickly destroyed as his fingers slipped off and gripped the air. With nothing supporting Eustace against the gravity, he could only gasp wide-eyed as his body crashed into the chilling waters. His own scream was cut short, transformed into an abrupt sploosh of water and a sole ripple in the dead sea. It was a difficult struggle for him. Weighed down by his clothes, Eustace could only barely return to the surface before the sheer weight pulled him down again. His frantic splashing gave more notice to where he was than any cries for help he could utter. Before Evy could dive in after him, if she even wanted to, a large hand grabbed the rope around her and pulled her right off and away from the railing, ”Get down from there!” ”Eustace? Eustace!” Hitesh shined a heavy flashlight down at the dark waters, towards the splashing. He could see the boy just barely hanging on above surface. ”Don't worry Eustace, we're here to-” A shadow streaked by the side of Hitesh's vision, and the man was caught off-guard as another figure dove straight into the ocean. This time, it was Embody, and she brought with her the lifebuoy for Eustace. Or perhaps rather...for the two of them now. Though heroic in nature, the act rose up nothing by irritable contempt in McTavish, ”WHAT THE BLOODY HELL ARE YOU THINKING?” ”Em-...Emi...?” his voice was trailing under his own shivers. He grasped the buoy, along with Embody, with what little strength he had left. He was barely able to stay conscious. Fortunately, the waters were still again. No engine, no wind. No waves. It was the strangest occurrence. And unfortunately for Callum, not every occurrence had a physical representation. He did look in the right place however. It's just...the creature he was searching for was a little larger than he would expect. It was also a lot less tangible, though its influence was undoubtedly real. Callum himself would not be able to experience what was going on from his vantage point, but those around the buoy and Eustace and Embody in the water would notice it first. See, from where Eustace and Embody were, the lifebuoy's rope was losing slack. Furthermore, there was less boat beside them and more water. They were resting on top of a mountain of water. A very, very prominent mountain of water. ”Captain!” ”Christ...what!?” ”We're...we're 30 fathoms above sea level!” ”Wha-” The ship suddenly sped forward like a rocket. Upon the mountain of water, Embody and Eustace included, the ship would follow the trajectory of the apparent rogue wave. The world sprinted past them, the Earth seemingly turning right under their feet at unparalleled speed. A few of the sailors who didn't brace themselves in time were flung right off their feet and out of the boat. The Captain himself fell forward and slid across the bow, his body pinned by the high speed against the wall of the bridge. Hitesh dropped his flashlight dangerously close near Embody and Eustace and gripped the railing for dear life. The wind was too violent for any words to be spoken and heard. Even Eustace, despite his best intentions to try and tell Embody something no doubt extremely emotional and heartfelt, was ruined by the noise of the wind and the roar of the waves that turbulently split from under the boat. Apparently, the waters themselves were sliced up by the cutting speed of the ship, and the water reformed itself above the boat like a sort of tunnel. Behind the ship was a massive waterfall and destructive wave as the ocean reformed itself against the blinding speed of the vessel. Twilight approached and disappeared from the rising sun within seconds. It seemed like whole hours were whittled away as they crossed through the time zones. Morning would come all too quickly as finally, the boat stopped its maddening pace and the waters behind it quelled. Eustace and Embody managed to survive the ordeal, though they were soaking wet and prone to illness if they kept in the water any longer. While some of the sailors helped them out, the HMS Endeavour would be treated to another...somewhat less strange sight. Right beside their boat was another, still anchored in place but swaying from the ferocious waved caused by Endeavour's insane journey and forceful stop. It was a ship not unlike their own, though the ship seemed unchristened. On board, at least on the deck, was a lone man whose were affixed with terror as he stared at the sudden neighbours. ”Wh-Who...what...” The man paled like he'd seen a ghost. Maybe he did. ”What...where...” The man fainted. He wasn't the only victim of the sudden turn of events. Besides a banged up head and enough bruises for two regular expeditions, McTavish felt like he had just met face to face with Davy Jones himself. Of all people, it was Dr. Hitesh who helped him up to his feet after fishing Eustace and Embody out of the water. ”Captain?” ”...Where...where...” ”GPS puts us off the East coast of Argentina, by about 700 miles.” ”No...idiot...where is...my rum...” ”Sir?” ”I need my rum!” McTavish bellowed, staggering onto his feet before nearly toppling over Hitesh. The other boat's lone resident was coming to. Strange to find another vessel in the same place like this, especially after a scene like that. Then again, he appeared very shocked at what just happened. Still, one did not simply idly make their way near the edge of Shredder Reef. Edited by Falque, Mar 30 2012, 12:29 AM.

She ignored Captain McTavish's indignant cry as she rushed past Hitesh with the life buoy in tow. There wasn't much to think about the situation or try to overanalyse it, when the life of the only person that really mattered to her was in danger. At first she wished she could have taken control of the situation more like Evy, but when the little blonde didn't come back with Eustace, that was when she decided it was time to take the situation into her own hands. She had managed to activate the little light on the side of the buoy, and silently cut through the water in efforts to find him, the life buoy hopefully becoming a beacon to which he could travel towards. Embody found him in still waters, feebly calling out her real name. She felt the weight of her other as he grasped onto the life buoy and around her arms, but she made no reply, feeling as cold and as waterlogged as Eustace. Her clothing was thin, which offered less resistance in the water, but they clung to her skin and made her shiver. She took one of his hands, giving him the little bit of warmth that she still had, but she was becoming almost as cold as he was... His hands had no warmth left in them; they were as cold as ice. If they didn't get out of the water soon, they would surely suffer from hypothermia, or worse. There was a complete absence of wind and waves once they were reunited again. Being one that was usually aware of the wind's presence, the lack of wind disturbed her deeply, as though they were now trapped in a thick, unmoving lagoon. Though she was quite wrong about that. The amount of water displaced between the boat and the buoy seemed to be gradually increasing, and the rope was losing slack. She couldn't comprehend the scale of their situation, but when the ship sped forward, it felt like it had knocked out the very breath in her: a colossal wave, as though it was a mysterious tsunami made by the force of God. Everything that she saw seemed like a huge time lapse of the sky and sea around her, the clouds and times of day shifted as they were travelling at dizzying speeds, she wondered why she wasn't dead yet, or if she was dead. When the boat finally stopped, it seemed a little too impossible that she and Eustace had survived the whole ordeal, their only connection to the ship being a length of cord attached to the HMS Endeavour. Once they were pulled out of the water, Embody was largely unaware of her surroundings, the most important thing now was to ensure his safety. She picked up individual fragments of conversation between McTavish and Sandhu; '700 miles'. 'Argentina', 'East Coast'. Though there wasn't much that she could do for Eustace at the present moment. A shivering hand went to his forehead to trace his hair with her fingers. Idiot. In probably the only act of affection that she had ever displayed to Eustace after her... first kiss, and probably the only display of affection with other people that were possibly witnessing her, she held him close for a while, while she was still shivering from the cold and the wet. She felt mostly responsible for having Eustace fall overboard, but she couldn't lose him... At least he was out of the water now, but what had happened in the past few minutes or so made her question her own beliefs about the question that McTavish posed earlier to her. She let him go, not having spoken a word to him at all, or anyone else present. Even if they had managed to ask her anything, she seemed to be playing mute and deaf. Feeling great guilt and great confusion within her, she went back to the Captain's cabin to get herself dried off and warmed up. Embody was still unsure with how to deal with someone who had returned his feelings for her. Mutual love was difficult for her to comprehend and handle. Most of the advances were made by Eustace, and she found it near possible to voice how she felt towards him most of the time. |

I'm a time-traveler! I travel forward at the miraculous rate of 60 seconds per minute
|
“Eustace!” Evy cried out, her eyes wide. “Eustace, I’m here! Grab – grab my hand, I’ll pull you up!” She felt him throw his weight against her, felt his hand close around her wrist. Her fingers grabbed him too; they were too small to close around his wrist, but she tried, holding him. His weight pulled her down but Evy wouldn’t let go, not for anything, not – Eustace’s fingers slipped and Evy screamed. “No! Eustace – no!” She screamed again, watching him plunge into the water and hearing his own scream cut off. She wanted to dive in after him – she couldn’t just let him go – but she hesitated, and that moment of hesitation was too much. Captain MacTavish’s hand grabbed her rope and he was pulling her back. Evy yelled, thrashing. “Let go! Let go of me, let go!” But Evy had tied the rope too well; she couldn’t escape it, no matter how much she flailed, and her shaking, wet fingers couldn’t even untie the knot, slipping against the rough threads. “Eustace…” she whimpered. Embody streaked past her and dove into the water, gripping a buoy with her, and Evy gasped, dashing back to the railing and staring in amazement at the other girl. Evy couldn’t see down below, but she could only hope – Embody would find Eustace. She had to. She had – she had to. Evy gripped the railing, desperately, only able to remember the awful, awful moment when Eustace’s hand had closed over hers and then… the feeling of his fingers slipping away against her skin. It made her feel sick to think about, like her whole world was – lurching – The boat heaved and Evy screamed again. Her grip slipped on the wet railing and she was lifted up, off her feet – for a moment, she was clinging to the railing with only a few fingers, the rope around her waist securing her, her feet flailing about in the air. Her arms ached but she pulled herself back to the railing, gripping it. As the boat rocked and shot threw the water, Evy huddled against the railing, watching the world sail past with wide, amazed eyes. She gasped for breath as they stopped, her arms battered and bruised from slamming against the railing, and her waist as well from the rope still tied around it yanking at her, but – she was well, they were safe, and Eustace and Embody were back on deck. “Eustace! Embody!” Evy helped the soldiers pull them out, then tackled Eustace with a hug. She squeezed him close, burying her face against him. “I’m sorry! I’m sorry I let you go!” She hugged him again, then dove at Embody, hugging her as well. “You were so brave!” She smiled at the other girl, and plopped back, sitting on the deck and breathing hard. “… Where are we?” Evy asked finally, looking around. The Captain said they were by Argentina, and Evy shot to her feet. “But –” She looked at Dr. Hitesh, “but that’s all the way across the Pacific!” Evy looked around again, then back at the Doctor, then at the man on the other boat. After a moment, Evy shrugged, and smiled enthusiastically at the lone man on the other boat, waving at him enthusiastically. “Hello!” She called. |

The rope was painful as it slid through Ash's fingers, but the more it slid, the tighter he gripped. So long as there was tension in the line then he knew Evy couldn't be far from hand's reach. He just had to hold on a little longer; just long enough until she found Eustace, and then he could pull them both up. Somehow, he would do it even if he had to pull them up alone. The Captain had different plans. With an amazing display of strength, the man pulled Evy straight off the side of the boat and back on deck. Ash caught her as she tumbled, but unfortunately, Eustace wasn't with her. The boy looked back to the edge of the ship just in time to see a shadowy figure leap into the water as the furious voice of the Captain called out in anger. "Why?!" Ash cried to the wind. Why was everyone so foolhardy? However, his complaints would have to wait later as the calm soon ushered the storm. A sense of vertigo took hold of Ash as the boat lurched, and before him was the great maw of the sea. He grabbed tightly to a nearby railing -- the adrenaline numbed the pain from his rope burns -- as the ship tipped forward and shot through the waters at lightning fast speeds. Fear overwhelmed Ash's senses as he closed his eyes and prayed for their survival. When all was said and done, the stormy night soon passed, and the two stranded sailors were brought back to ship. Embody shared a moment of intimacy with Eustace, but for Ash, his mind was filled with a single thought. He turned to Evy, grabbed her by the arm and asked, "What were you thinking?!" He tried to keep his voice down, but his anger was hard to hide. "Did you think that was brave? That you were being a hero? Well, it was stupid, and you could've gotten yourself killed!" Although they only knew each other a short while, Ash did think of Evy as a friend, and he didn't like his friends dying because of foolish actions. He knew Embody even less, but Ash still gave her a look of disappointment; as if he expected her to be smarter than this. The moment soon passed as the boy's steam sputtered out. Before a bigger scene could be made of the ordeal, Ash excused himself from the area without a word and made his way inside to dry off and change clothes. He would have to hear about what happened after the storm at a later time. For now, he was not in a talking mood. Edited by Lemon, Mar 31 2012, 11:40 AM.

Santa Bob: Christmas comes once a year? Since when?
|
Perspective is often the most important element in understanding just how much the universe hates you. To a valley girl teenage blond back in the states, the odds were against her if the barista so much as included one part fat in a wholly nonfat latte. Then there was Eustace. Currently the man known only as Murphy made sure things got worse before they got better. Take for example the fact that he fell the rest of the way, into the waters. Next make his rescue depend upon teenagers, a scientist, and one captain that took pride in being an asshole. Best odds were probably on the teenagers, but what Callum was trying very unsuccessfully to understand was exactly how the universe carried out its whims. A creature, a something, a possibility that the captain and even members of their little crew would have never believed had risen up beneath them. It was hard to tell what exactly was off with how the ship was accelerating. Mostly because it only left a six second window for him to be somewhere more convenient to ride out the rest of this journey! He heard the Indian speak about how high up the ship was. Somewhere in there is a joke about how we cannot possibly fathom what is going to happen next. No, that's the exact joke! I'll save that for MacBastard. In the meantime, priorities. The ship was beginning to accelerate, or rather the earth and everything around them was starting to really get a move on. Callum had no options left, he triggered the gravity rave just long enough to grab hold onto part of the outer bridge. Right as the last second ran out, a sheepish grin crossed his face. No, we haven't done anything this stupid for awhile. Bout time we got back in business. What goes up must come down, and their return trip from what had to be a a wave beyond possibility came with such incredible wind that Callum found his laughter unable to carry over the ship. Granted a laughing maniac was probably the last thing their little boat needed. The simple fact was this: Something that had the power decided to move their little boat and shake the confines of reality. The only proper response to the universe taking such measures (at least according to the Maestro) was to find enjoyment in those moments. All too soon the ride stopped. He had long since run out of breath from the maddening cackles and hearty attempts at laughter, but after a few short repetitions for air the lungs could grasp, Callum started right back with more laughter. If the scientist was right, they had nearly just crossed the Pacific ocean in almost no time at all. More ironic was that here, they were not alone. A man on a similar boat off in the distance looked up, questioned them, then fainted. Another curiosity? Fantastic! MacBastard began speaking again though, this time complaining about the rum. Before he could stop himself, the Maestro stared straight on at the man with a quizical look. "Really? Reeeeaaaallly?" While he certainly was not swinging fists, the Maestro felt it high time to get a stab back at the man. "Would you also like a jar of dirt? Perhaps we should consider summoning the Kraken next! It might be worse than that doctor... perhaps without inebriation our dear Captain cannot hope to fathom that the 'impossible' just got us cross the Pacific! How does nautical terms coincide with drinking? Is it like driving?" He blinked a couple of times, realizing that the tangent was all too quickly sweeping away his own relevance. "Oh, and can we go board that ship over there? Not like pirates... just to check up on the man that passed out and exchange charts... or whatever it is nautical folk do." |

”Not just across the Pacific, Evy.” Hitesh smiled briefly, maintaining the last of a somewhat sunny attitude before Callum managed to drop his own bomb on McTavish, ”We're very much in the Atlantic Ocean, now.” Unfortunately for the doctor, not everyone had the excitable disposition of young Evy. The Maestro in particular had no less than sour words for the disoriented captain, and before the Captain himself could muster the appropriate condemnation and indignation to reply, Hitesh urged him to take a different course of action. Other sailors took the time to avoid the growing animosity on deck and help Eustace and Embody out of the water, the both of them miraculously surviving. Eustace was shivering uncontrollably, the last heat in Embody long since regulated with his own. He couldn't remember what if felt to be warm anymore, not even as he was pulled out of the water and left to ring out most of his newly acquired moisture on deck. ”McTavish, take them to their quarters. Please. I'll clean this up.” His appeal only went so far as to keep the man from charging towards Callum and promptly throwing him overboard, but it didn't stave off the death glare the captain threw right back. He didn't speak a word, but his chest heaved mightily a in a fit of pent up rage. But his First Mate was quite right. Besides, Callum didn't bleed liquor. Beating the tar out of him would not make him forget the rapidly lost night any sooner. ”Let's go.” McTavish grabbed Eustace's wet wrist and dragged him right behind Asher, who himself took to the cabins. Remaining on deck was the mouthy instigator himself, Evy, Hitesh, and their new found friend recently coming to. Seeing the little girl wave back, the man blinked and shifted his eyes across the Endeavour. Finally, he tentatively raised his hand and waved. Hitesh opted to at least entertain Callum's own wish to move across ships. He moved to the edge of the boat and called out to the man, ”Hello? My name is Doctor Hitesh Sandhu.” The man brushed himself off and squinted, perhaps trying to establish whether what he was seeing was truly real, ”Hi. Uh, Frederick Gaul, at your service.” Fred brushed himself off and gave a slight bow. ”Do you need assistance?” ”No, no, that's quite alright!” Frederick hastily declined their offer, shaking his head ”I'm perfectly fine. Aside from seeing your ship fly towards me like a rocket.” Frederick spoke in English, with a distinctly Austrian accent carrying his tone. There was perhaps more hair in his thick, though short, beard than there was on the top of his head. His hair showed the later stages of greying while his beard retained some of a more healthy auburn. He was rather slight in build, and probably didn't stand much taller than the average male. A precarious slouch left him hanging just a little over the edge of his ship's railing, as though he were ready to dive into the water at any moment. Hitesh turned back to Callum and shrugged. If they weren't allowed on his ship...”You're quite welcome to come aboard here. I think we could all use a bit of rest. None of us have slept and it's already late morning.” Frederick hesitated, biting his lip and looking back at his own cabin. It took a visible amount of reassurance before he finally accepted the doctor's offer. With some of the sailors preparing a bridge to let Frederick come aboard, Hitesh sighed and turned his full attention back to Callum. He walked towards the Maestro undoubtedly deliberately and lowered his voice, ”Please, don't provoke the caber tosser. He may gladly send you boarding the other ship, but with a few broken limbs and hip.” A noise behind Hitesh grabbed his attention, which turned out to be Frederick uttering a small cry of fright as he nearly tripped over himself setting his first foot onto the boat. His right foot, of course. He turned back to look at his own ship, almost longingly and regrettably. ”Is there something wrong, Mr. Gaul?” Fred shot him a startled glance, unable to reply for a few long moments. ”Oh, no...just not used to setting foot on ghost ships appearing out of nowhere.” Apparently, he didn't enjoy keeping his feet on what he suspected was no more stable than the rocking ocean beneath them. ”Get your clothes off asap and wrap yourself up.” McTavish offered just the bare advice before shoving Eustace into the living quarters where Asher himself would be in the process of or finished changing. No doubt, it was a bit of an awkward setting. Though the boy himself didn't seem to harbour any additional animosity for Eustace, whose own tumble into the water stemmed from accident, it was an undoubted realization that Ash did not feel so similarly for Embody's heroics. To Eustace, not only was Embody someone he cared about, but she very much potentially saved his life. Had she not dropped the lifeline into the water and carried it to him, there was no guarantee he'd be here to see Asher ever again. He remembered, among the harsh words exchanged between others, Embody's embrace most of all. She didn't normally...do that in public. It was a humbling experience, perhaps. ”S-some wave, huh?” Eustace still shivered, even after first stripping off his pants and shirt, abandoning the brunt of the cold water gracing his skin. The undergarments were next to come off too, Eustace too cold and too wet to have anything done by adding a fresh pair of clothes. Instead, he picked himself up a blanket and wrapped himself in it. ”I wonder if the Captain really doesn't believe in tales, or if he's just afraid of something. And that's why he's so superstitious...” Even without Asher's explicit approval to go on, Eustace was not afraid to ramble to himself while he tried to dry out. ”Yo ho ho, and a bottle of...” apparently, McTavish was enjoying the sudden turn of fortunes after invading the kitchen to find an unopened bottle of cooking rum. Or what was once unopened and full. From Embody's perspective as the Captain accidentally charged right into his old room in a forgetful tipsy, the bottle was likely opened before and simply dosed from, as who could possibly down a quarter of it already? ”...rum.” McTavish stared at the black-masked girl sitting in his quarters. His clouded mind gave way to immediately memories and previous forewarning. He wasn't supposed to be in his room right now. It was for the lasses. Stupid girls, ruining the precious hierarchy of the ship. Well, he didn't have to give them the best place in the cabins. He just did...for some reason. Instead of walking out, however, McTavish decided under the influence of his poison that it was a clearly superior idea to come sit down across from Embody. He didn't look her in the eye (or what he could make of one) just yet, opting to swig into his precious early birthday gift one more time. ”Nothing magical 'bout fairy tales. Who wants 'em, anyway. Naive.” He grunted, slouching in his corner chair and debating whether to pour himself another swig of rum. ”That boy's dad chased around legends. And all of a sudden, the legends came true.” The Captain finally lost his willpower, sticking the lip of the bottle to his own and pouring himself the last drops of the first half of the bottle. If he was lucky, he'd soon pass out and not wake up until the next morning, when he was ready to start a fresh day. For now, he just wanted to forget things. Forget the memories he already had. ”Then he burned to death because of legends. Bloody job well done for him.” While the others retired to their own quarters, Evy and Callum were invited along with Frederick back to the dining hall. Some of the cooks were restlessly gathering up an impromptu breakfast to feed those sailors who opted not to take the day off and sleep. With the Captain likely drunk out of his mind, it seemed the crew was more than willing to take advantage of the vacuum in authority and do what they wanted. Besides, they were a good week ahead of schedule. That in of itself was a delightful advantage to celebrate a little time off, as well as mourn for their few co-workers who did not strap themselves down for the transportation. ”So...you're going into Shredder Reef?” Frederick sipped his own tea and looked over the three. Hitesh had already explained to him a vague description of their trajectory, a few hundred more miles to the East. He omitted the exact where and for what, but their guest picked up on the obvious detail very quickly. ”They say the waters are alive there. But I'm beginning to think they're mistaken. Shredder Reef doesn't send ships flying faster than friction should allow for. Is uh...” Frederick looked around, a tinge embarrassed about his next thoughts, ”Is there something else going on here?” he kept his voice low. Hitesh, however, seemed visibly confused and shook his head in denial. Frederick turned to the other two instead, ”I know a bit of magic myself, but I don't know much of anything that could cause what commotion you all made. Is there something else going on, on this ship?” Frederick seemed genuinely curious. ”I think our rogue wave surprised all of us, Frederick.” Hitesh assured. |

"Captain," It was neither an exclamation of surprise or shock. Luckily for McTavish, Embody wasted no time in getting changed. By the time he had traipsed into his old room, she was already wearing a clean and dry pair of jeans and buttoning up a black shirt. She wasn't loitering around in a blanket, unlike her poor other half. Before getting dressed, she had used a damp washcloth to get rid of the sensation of seawater on her skin. Embody's elemental cloth was hung up on a clothes hanger, saturated, but most of the water was wrung out. Though her hair was still wet, though it had evidence that she was drying it. As for the other wet garments, they were in a pile together on the floor. A towel lay on his bed, though Embody wasn't exactly in the mood to feel embarrassed. She just wanted to be left alone for now, and she expected the captain to just leave after realizing he was the one who gave the girls his room. Instead of leaving, he made himself comfortable. She noticed the alcohol in his hand and finally realized why he was like this. Disregarding the intoxicated Captain, he seemed to be talking to his bottle more than to her, so she just gathered up her wet clothing and wondered if the ship had a place where she could wash her clothes, or if she just had to hang them up and bear the saltwater scent. A bit lost, she just put them in a plastic bag to separate them from anything dry, and sat on his bed while she dried her hair. He was talking about legends, disputing and criticizing them again. Funny, because that was also on her mind. After what had happened, it had seriously challenged what she had said before, about not believing in miracles. It almost felt like someone else was punishing them because they didn't believe in fairytales, legends or miracles. Perhaps the Captain was feeling that way too. She started to comb her hair, her knees raised to her chest protectively. 'That boy's dad'... Was he referring to Eustace's father? From what she had heard of the elusive and late Henry Miller, didn't he serve in the Navy? Eustace had admired his father greatly - it was plain to see from him wearing the old navy peacoat all the time. Though if what McTavish said was the truth, then it seriously tarnished the image of Eustace's father for her; and rather, it felt like Eustace had told her nothing about him, yet she had already revealed too much about herself. He must have been talking about Mr. Miller. From what she could gather, the pieces fit quite well together, of what little information she knew about Eustace's past. Though she never expected McTavish to know so much about Eustace - perhaps it did explain why he berated the boy a lot more if he was much closer to him than she had expected. She wondered if he knew his family personally. "Then he burned to death because of legends." "I thought Mr. Miller was killed in a mob." she answered quietly. At the same time, she was wondering if they were talking about the same person in mind, and this was her way to confirm. Her testimony was what Eustace told her anyway: that his parents were killed in a mob. If Eustace was lying to her, it would shatter her world. She hoped that McTavish was simply drunk and messed up on the finer details. She let the towel drape around her lap, and her head was bowed. She didn't expect the Captain to listen, but she let out what else had been bothering her. She was glad that it was the Captain that came in, rather than Hitesh, Evy or even Eustace. Although the Captain was drunk, he still shared the same amount of disbelief in legends as she did, and he would probably understand to some extent, when Embody uttered regretfully, "I said I didn't believe in miracles, but..." she fell silent again and shivered, wrapping her arms around her body. She was still a little cold. "I almost let him drown." Embody revealed, not sharing the same sentiments that Eustace held for her, or how others may have perceived her actions. She didn't expect McTavish to understand what she was talking about. She didn't think of herself as heroic for diving in and rescuing him. It was completely suicidal, when she looked back on it. She didn't want to lose him, but her 'heroics' wouldn't have happened if their hands didn't slip away when she had tried to pull him up the first time. Asher's look of disappointment echoed inside of her. She wasn't sure what she could have done. Perhaps Embody needed a drink herself. She buried her face in her hands, feeling quite terrible. Her voice was too soft to pick up on some of the finer details of what she said, but it was evident that she was quite miserable about the situation. "He must . . . . me." She wasn't sure of how Eustace would feel towards her now. Did leaping in after him redeem herself in his eyes, or was he just as disappointed as Asher was with her? Maybe he wouldn't trust her after what she done, thinking that she betrayed him. ((For clarification, the '. . . .' isn't 'love' or 'like'.)) Edited by Naminote, Apr 8 2012, 09:17 AM.
